I m Betty Esenberg, PhD, Captain of the United Federation of Planets ship Enterprise. It is time for my final newsletter article as President. As I said at the beginning of this year. Greetings from the great Commonwealth of Virginia and the Virginia JCI Senate, a new colony of the United Federation of Planets. In the spirit of the UFP we say to all Live Long and Prosper. This year our colony members and Starfleet officers have been concentrating on the part of the Jaycee Creed that states the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations. We are members of Federation colonies that rule themselves but also Quoting the Jaycees -- practice the art of living together in the spirit of brotherhood and in the true interest of humanity. Parallel to this part of the Jaycee Creed are the guiding principles of the United Federation of Planets. These are the principles of universal liberty, rights, and equality. Thus the Virginia JCI Senate Colony of the United Federation of Planets has been working to exemplify the joy of universal brotherhood while serving our communities in the interest of humanity. In serving our communities we plan to work closely with the Virginia Jaycees. Along with our work this year, we have been having lots of fun and fellowship! We kicked off the year by flying our shuttle in for our Summer Outing (August 4-6) in Virginia Beach, VA. There we did some planning and celebrating of our new colony. We started off Friday night with a Tides ball game. We were accompanied to the game by the Virginia Beach Jaycees. We were very happy to have Region III NVP Rick Rutter as our special guest along with Bruce Hufford, President of West Virginia JCI Senate. Next we attended USJCI Senate Fall Board Meeting in Pasco Washington. We used our shuttle to get there and fly low over the scenery. We had a good time and I m happy to say that thanks to the hard work of Troy Anderson as Virginia s Return the Favor Chairman, Art Esenberg won one of two Return the Favor rewards for his work with the Virginia Beach Jaycees. In addition, our Ariel Jones, was awarded one of two top Performer Awards for her work as the National Return the Favor Program Manager. On October 28, Kathleen and Tom King hosted the VA/ MD Social, the Olympic Games. We were glad to have USJCI Senate President John Robinson as our special guest along with Gary Deal, Chief of Staff. November the Senate colony met with the Virginia Jaycees in Sterling,VA. The Jaycees elected their new Board headed by President Lin Martin. We had special guests Gary Deal and Diane Deal. Lieutenant Amy Tenhouse worked very hard to make it possible to welcome 3 new Senators at that meeting. Also during the Fall Board meeting in Sterling, we voted (Continued on page 2) VA JCI Senate Colony of the United Federation of Planets (UFP)

2 PAGE 2 VIRGINIA JCI SENATE NEWSLETTER Presidential Report (continued from page one) for the unanimous approval of Ariel Jones as a National candidate for Secretary, the first time for Virginia in over 20 years, and Tom King as a candidate for NVP, Region III - both are slated to serve, if elected, in the year. As the year has progressed each member of Board has earned at least a promotion to Lieutenant in Starfleet. Everyone has been doing an exceptional job. They have each pitched in to help each other. I know promotions will continue as the year goes on. Our shuttle put on some lights and bells and flew to the house of Beth and Craig Lane outside of Richmond for our Holiday party on December 2 nd. Games were played and fun was had by all. We were back on board the Enterprise for our Winter Board trip to St. Augustine Florida. There again we had a great time touring and socializing. We also worked hard to raise money for the USJCI Senate Foundation and the Presidental Sweepstakes. When we returned from Florida, we attended a Board meeting with the Virginia Jaycees in Virginia Beach on February 9-11 where we continued raising funds for our USJCI Senate Foundation under the leadership of Elizabeth Benka Region III Rep and for the Presidential Raffel. We had some special guests- Connecticut JCI Senate President Nancy Gianetti, US JCI Senate Treasurer Lawrence Pittman and his wife Karol. That night after the banquet we held the famous Martini Shake-off and our guests judged the results for us. We thank them for their help! Lisa Smith one the infamous trophy cup. As the year progresses we will have more fun and challenges as well. I could not have faced any of them without the great crew I have this year. We are financially sound. Our membership status is good. We have almost a full slate of prospective officers for next year lead by our outstanding Vice President Melissa Sleeth as the candidate for President. At MAI in Deleware Elizabeth Benka led an effort which resulted in our raising a lot of money for the Foundation Scholarship fund. Ron Sleeth was awarded with the prestigious Friendship award which honors the support of the spouse of a hard working Senator. Ron was chosen over many applicants and approved by our NVP Rick Rutter. Ron Sleeth is Friendship #84. Congratulations! One more piece of good news so far this year. Thanks to Christina Brunner and her committee we now have a Foundation Scholarship winner from Virginia, Michael Lenzi, Jr. I look forward to hearing more about this at our next meeting in the beautiful mountains of Virginia. Finally I would like to thank each Lieutenant who is a hardworking member of the Senate Board this year: Vice President, Melissa Sleeth; Chairman of the Board, Kay Faries; Treasurer, Jeff Bobich; Secretary, Jennifer Rebby; Hospitality Director, Hope Ellison; Director at Large, Jackie Julien; Rooms, Reservations, and Outings Director, Chris Heinz; Bar Director, Chris Taylor; Chaplain, Vanessa Kinsley; Return the Favor Chair, Troy Anderson; First Timers Chair, Sherry King; Scholarship Chair, Christina Brunner; Audit Committee Chair, Kathleen King; Historian, Gerry Sproles; Senate Newsletter, Dawana L. LIVE LONG AND PROSPER Betty Esenberg, #72227 President MAI 2019 Bar Chairman Hello Everyone, I m in charge of the bar for MAI 2019! Virginia always puts on a great meeting and we will need your help to make it a success. To help offset the cost of running the bar I am asking for donations of alcohol. I will have a sign-up sheet available at the May meeting. I will also have a sign-up sheet for those who would like to work the bar. The more we have sign up the easier it will be to assign the shifts. Working the bar is a lot of fun and a great way to meet people. We will need your help! (See pages 10 and 11) Troy Anderson, #67983 MAI 2019 Bar Chairman

3 LIVE LONG AND PROSPER PAGE 3 From the Vice President Hello fellow Senators! I can't believe it is May already and that we have come to the end of another great year. It has been a pleasure to serve as your Vice President this year. I have enjoyed all of our meetings and extra events as we celebrated President Betty's year of Live Long and Prosper. Thanks Betty! I want to thank my team who led us very ably this year. First, to Hope Ellison, who coordinated our hospitality village and kept us happy with jars of snacks all year! Next, to Chris Taylor, who jumped in and took over the duties of the bar master and kept our thirsts quenched. To Chris Heinz, our Rooms, Reservations and Outings Director, who found great restaurants and sites for us to eat and socialize happily. To Dawana HarrisBey, who once again took our newsletter and made it better than ever with her great ability to produce a thoughtful and beautifully laid out document. To Paul Showalter for continuing to maintain our website and serve as our official photographer. And finally to Jackie Julien, for taking on the role of Director-at-Large and pitching in wherever she was needed all year. I also want to give a final thank you to the rest of the Board and the many of you that attended our meetings and outings. I appreciate all the support and look forward to the new year about to start! For the Senate, Melissa Sleeth #69220

Alan Richardson, #50550 MAI 2019 Chair Return the Favor Hello Everyone, It s time to start getting your Return the Favor info together. This year the Virginia Senate has been a major leader with the Return the Favor program and we have had one of our own recognized as an Outstanding Senator on the national level. The third quarter submissions are due May 27 th. Now if you have been helping local Jaycee chapters by mentoring or providing manpower throughout the year but have not turned in any hours, it s not too late. Third quarter submissions can encompass the whole year, so if you helped a chapter earlier in the year you can still turn it in for credit. I will post the forms through the list serve and on the Senate FaceBook page. If you are unable to fill out the forms then send your information to me and I will fill it out for you. The Virginia Senate continues to give back to the Virginia Jaycees during a time when the Jaycees can use our help. There is still time to give back to the local chapters. Many chapters have lots of events outside as the weather warms up and they are happy to have our support and guidance. Let s finish the year on a strong note! Troy Anderson, #67983 Return the Favor Program Manager 2018 Third quarter submissions are due May 27 th!
