1 The Official Publication of the Illinois JCI Senate Volume 52 Issue 3 April PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Marilyn Burton # mkbrph@comcast.net Last issue ended with a prediction about the ILLINI-MIZZOU Braggin Rights college basketball game. I am glad to report ILLINI did win! We had a nice crowd of Senators plus guests with good food and beverage with strong committee support under lifetime Chairman Val Koble # MO Senate President Kristen Johnson #72859 lost the wager and will be donating to US JCI Senate Foundation. Next year it s Missouri s turn to do hospitality under lifetime chairman Gerry Moore #26604 (honorary IL Senator) so plan to be there, wearing orange and blue. ILLINI was noticeably absent from NCAA tournament this year, so we hope for an improved team next time. I drove into a blizzard on the trip home but was thankful I avoided hitting the snowplow! Illinois Senate travels well together! We had 22 gathered in St. Augustine, FL for the US Winter Board of Directors meeting. We started the weekend with a dinner together at Caddyshack restaurant at the resort and voted the Murray Brothers memorabilia and golf ball appetizers as a hole in one. It was a wonderful location and we enjoyed it, despite a few days of cold weather there. There was wonderful seafood, lots of things to see and do, one of which was shut-down due to the temporary Federal budget stalemate (lighthouse). IL Senate received an outstanding Road Runner award for the trimester. Susie Colbert-Curtis #73137 has consistently promoted travel opportunities for the IL Senate. I was proud to lead our delegation. The Winter meeting was held January at the Decatur Conference Center in Decatur, IL in conjunction with IL Jaycees Year End Meeting. We toasted two Freshman Senators at our Friday night event. Welcome to Will Hinshaw #76510 and Traci Hinshaw # There were nearly 60 Senators total attending the weekend. Thanks to Yvonne Agnello-Adams #72530 for chairing another successful Silent Auction fundraiser. Jaycee chapters donated auction items for POC points! The newly installed JCI IL (Jaycee) President Vanessa Birchler #74430 spoke at our Business meeting about a Mentor match idea for Jaycee chapters. If you have an interest in serving in an ongoing relationship with a Jaycee chapter needing guidance, contact Vanessa. Did you know there are two new Jaycee chapters: Champaign-Urbana and Chicago-Northside? We wish them both great success! Thanks to Lynne McGill #70364 for her efforts on a successful LOTTO raffle held during the month of February. Making money was in the cards for 2018, when we implemented our Poker fundraisers at the Elks Club in Savoy, IL on February 3rd, February 17th, March 24th, and March 31st. I really appreciate all those Senators and volunteers who worked this project. A special thanks to the Danville Senators (aka Mafia ) for their consistent support. The community/area supported the project and receipts look to have exceeded budgeted totals! A big thanks to chairman Jack Ward #53585, scheduler JDO #35308, and Denny the Closer Birt # In This Issue President s Comments VP and Chairmen Reports Business Meeting Minutes Treasurer s Report Editor s Notebook The Heartland Honeydipper Registration Forms The IL JCI Senate hosted US JCI Region V (IL, IN, OH, KY & MI) Spring Fling meeting March at the Springfield City Centre Wyndham. We welcomed almost 100 friends for the weekend event. The Service Project was a huge success, collecting snack items for The Boys and Girls Club of Central Illinois. Their mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. They work to give them a safe haven away from street violence and crime while providing character building activities. We appreciate all who donated for this worthy cause! There was a fantastic Silent Auction for US JCI Senate Foundation, led by Karen Voshel # She also led trivia on Thurs. night which showed we did not remember much from the 1980 s! Thanks to everyone who attended and those IL Senators who helped in any capacity. A special thanks to Kate Patterson #52517 who stepped up when Brian Ziegle #42479 had a schedule conflict. I appreciate the coordinated effort of great food and drink service provided by Susie Colbert-Curtis #73137, Terry Barker #40979 (plus Phyllis), Chris Curtis #35440, Bill Patterson #47979, registration by Bev Olson #42473, with additional supplies, set-up and other help from Todd Oliver #58381, Kathy Priester #63678, Rita Senger #68534,Lisa Hirstein-Hughes #73357, and Robbie Johnston # Even using the good old CPG process we could not have planned for what happened, but it continued smoothly despite the hospitalization of Region V NVP Ray Ainslie # It was wonderful that he was able to SKYPE in, thanks to Allison Geddes #74777 from OH. We missed him but continue to wish him a complete, speedy recovery and urge strongly that he follows doctor s orders. We hope to see him at an upcoming IL JCI Senate meeting. There were 2 Region V awards given, but those will be announced at our Spring Meeting. (Continued on Page 2)

CO-EDITOR THOUGHTS Kay DeGroot # kaydsix@yahoo.com As it seems to happen in everyday life, time really flies by and that holds true for this 51st year of the Illinois JCI Senate. The US JCI Senate is focusing this year on Living the Creed and the Illinois Senate is looking to Gain Wisdom and Build Understanding. We shouldn t have to look too far into our Jaycee past to find ways to connect these two themes. Believe in something and it will increase both knowledge and understanding in your life. Please note that if you are receiving a paper copy of the Forum, it means the Illinois Senate does not have a valid address for you. Also thank you to all who have put forward the extra efforts in providing food for hospitality. Susie Colbert-Curtis #73137 has lead our travelers all across the country, and we have all had an excellent time. Val Koble #13921 did another fine job of setting up the MO/IL Basketball Challenge. Brian Ziegle #42479 and Kate Patterson #52517 ran a very successful Spring Fling. Great job by an outstanding committee! I want to thank all the Management Team for all their hard work in making this a very successful year so far. Please keep up the great jobs you are doing through the end of our year. I also would like to congratulate National VP Ray Ainslie #44136 on a fine year. I m sorry his outgoing weekend did not go as planned, but am very happy he is now doing very well. Great job Ray! The next meeting is May 11-13, at the Wyndham, Springfield. This will include our election of officers for the coming year. The TOYP Awards will be presented as will the Hall of Fame Award. Now that weather has improved and the snowbirds are flying back north we should have a nice turnout. July will be our Illinois Senate Picnic in Springfield. The Picnic Committee is working hard to show all a good time and recognize President Marilyn Burton #55106 for her stellar year! Please come out to socialize with our old Senate friends, meet our new Senators and give Marilyn your congratulations on a job well done. There are a great deal of good times coming up this summer in Illinois, Region V and national events. Please plan on attending all our events and take some time to visit our neighbors and national partners. You will meet some great people and see some awesome places. Thank you for all of the support you have shown the Illinois Senate in the past. Please plan to attend our upcoming meetings in Springfield. We are looking forward to seeing all of you! FRESHMAN SENATORS Joanne Rinaldo # Joanne1232@gmail.com We hope to see many new and younger Senators at the May GA in Springfield. Senators can utilize Senate Hospitality room for the weekend for $10. Senators are also encouraged to attend the Senate Meeting on Saturday morning. The snacks and lunch are also great. In addition, this GA will have the Illinois Jaycees TOYP banquet on Saturday evening. Consider purchasing tickets to attend the banquet to learn about this year s impressive honorees. Congratulations to our newest senator, Tracy Hinshaw # I look forward to seeing you at the May GA. US JCI SENATE REGION V NVP Ray Ainslie #44136 Thank you Illinois Senate for putting on a very nice Spring Fling. Brian Ziegle #42479 and Kate Patterson #52517, I cannot thank you enough. I hope all the numbers worked well. President Marilyn Burton #55106, your team did well on hosting a great event. I only wish I had been there. I am grateful that I was in Springfield when my heart attack came. St. John s Hospital was the place to be. The week before that I would have been in Michigan and far from my family who was able to come visit during my short stay in the hospital. A couple of weeks before that and Melodie #69200 would not have even been with me in Louisville. God put me in the right place and the right time. Disappointment still abounds by not being there, but I understand that everyone had a good time. I am doing better. I am getting used to a regimen of chemicals to keep me going, which does not set well with my temperament. A lot of personal perspective has changed. I am grateful for my family and my extended Senate Family. If you sent a card, an or contacted Melodie on Facebook thank you for your prayers and concerns. I figure satan doesn t want me and God isn t ready yet. So you re stuck with me for a while yet. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! 2018 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE This year s inductee into the Illinois Jaycee Hall of Fame is Jim Dimitroff #36997 from DuQuoin, Illinois. The induction will occur on Saturday evening, May 12, during the Illinois Jaycees TOYP banquet at the Wyndham Hotel in Springfield. All are invited to attend and congratulate Jimmy on his induction. Jim is a co-founder of the Du Quoin Jaycees. This nomination is from a community who believes that this recognition is about unconditional love for the community and its families. It is about the concept that raising the least of us to become the best of us is indeed the best work of life. In the minds of many from Du Quoin, he is the finest of nominees. Why? Because he holds all in his community to a standard that they are all responsible to help change someone s life. 3

6 EDITOR S NOTEBOOK Charlie Gouveia #18294 gouveiach@yahoo.com At the recent Region V Spring Fling banquet that we hosted in Springfield, one of the speakers, Steve Pickleman, JCI USA NVP, mentioned that just a few years ago he was doing crazy stuff with his local Jaycees, and now, here he is a National VP, to which, Mike Shoback #45136, Indiana Senate President commented How do you think we all got here! Fun, crazy enjoyable stuff is what drew many of us to the Jaycees, whenever we participated, be it ten or fifty years ago. Most of us got involved because the local Jaycees at the time were doing something that we were interested in, and we wanted to participate. Yes, some of those things often involved pretty crazy stuff. Perhaps today many of us feel that we are just too old or too grown up to play softball, shovel sand into backyard boxes, or to portray the angel of death at a haunted house, but it's great to reminisce about those days with our old Senate friends. They too have been there and get it, even if we are from different eras, chapters or even states. Despite the intervening years of various jobs, towns and geography, many of our friends from Jaycees and the Senate are some of our longest term and valued acquaintances. Even today, the best things in life often start with having a little fun. Just don't forget the high top boots. Deadline for the Summer FORUM is June 15, Send your articles and ad requests to iljciforum@yahoo.com. 7 THE HEARTLAND HONEYDIPPER by Linc As of late March, spring weather is having a hard time getting to Illinois. In the pit, some of last fall's stuff is still frozen solid due to our sub zero temperatures in January, but Linc expects things to break loose by May. AND... After the tiny meeting room last fall, we were rewarded with a huge one in Decatur, made the crowd seem small. Perhaps because Kate wanted us to leave room for proposed By-Law changes. Or maybe she wanted us to leave the room, we'll see about that. Brian will strike again. It was revealed that the Roadrunner Award does not travel very well in a suitcase...broken glass mixed with clothing does the washing machine no favors! Worse, if it is in clean clothes. Conclusion: glass does not travel as well as Illinois Senators do! At times, Owls fly better than airplanes. Mark was using Monte's walker. Sort of a manual Uber service. JDO announced that he has a license. To do what was not revealed. Donna did not throw the valentine chocolate. We learned that it was necessary to pee on an electric fence for a shocking experience. (Linc assures us that there are no electric fences in the outhouse) (No electricity either!) No wonder that we are always in the dark! When Denny D was shuttling the Illinois President to dinner in Florida, Denny picked up a bucket of peanuts to take home which, of course, spilled everywhere. It was then agreed no one was touching Denny's nuts! In St. Augustine there was a quiet pause, and then we found out "Margie was thinking"! Also in St. Augustine, the government was shutdown in budget discussions so the federally run St. Augustine Light Station was closed. Of course this is the one touristy thing President Marilyn wanted to see! First time some saw the business "Golf and Guns" attached to a gas station near Pigeon Forge, TN. Susie said it should be called "Balls and Bullets". It was closed when we left town, or the stories might have gotten better. In Pigeon Forge it broke record temps, 3 days in a row in the 80's and flowers and trees were in bloom. It was a cruel trick! Allergies abounded. Thursday night Game night before Spring Fling, in a trivia game we found out almost nobody could remember the 1980's! We were laughing and someone mentioned pain, then mentioned JDO and said "there is no patch for that"! Brian asked Kate to be the on-site Chairman of the Region V Spring Fling due to his urgent work conflict. A golfing trip to Florida? At Region V someone took home Terry's sausage on Friday night. Ray made sure that Mike Andrews did a good job playing Big Ray via Skype at the Region V banquet...from his hospital room! Questions, Questions... Who or what is past their Turnip??? What is a Wobble Dance??? Do Owls howl, or just hoot and holler??? Watch where you step, Linc is always watching!
