Announcements Announcing the Burwash Memorial Corn Roast Posted by John Calderon on Jul 29, 2013 Burwash Memorial Corn Roast Dick became a member in 1956, so it could not have been a Corn Roast per Dick Burwash before 1957 earliest. We have a photo in the history of the 1958 Corn Roast. See below: The Champaign Rotary Corn Roast proper i.e., with Illinois Sweet Corn as the feature dates to the late 1950s, When Savoy farmer Dick Burwash became a Club member. The annual picnic event dates to 1919, when it was first held on the grounds of State Senator Dunlap s mansion south of town that is now known as Senator s Inn. Some of the early Champaign Rotarians among the 160 attending included Bert Eisner (Albert Eisner, Sr., the only two-time president ever of Champaign Rotary), J.M. Kaufman, and C.A. Kiler. The picnic was held at various venues over the years until 1978, when it moved to its permanent home the Rotary Hill Pavilion at Lake of the Woods Park, eight months after the dedication of the new facility. The Club History has a 1958 picture showing noted Rotarians Maurie Skelton, J.C. Dallenbach, Irv Turner, and John Mittendorf enjoying the 1958 Corn Roast, and a 1986 photo showing Dick Burwash turning a huge rack of corn over the charcoal pit at Rotary Hill.

Our best guess is that Dick offered to grow and supply corn as early as 1957, and he had a special method: corn was picked early on a Monday morning, because the sugars reach a peak overnight. The ears are placed in a horse tank of ice water until late afternoon, when they are arranged in a two-piece wire rack that can be flipped over a bed of glowing charcoal coals, roasting the corn in its wet husks with a steaming effect. Result: world s finest sweet corn! At the right moment, roasted ears are dumped onto a canvas on the ground, and Rotarians and their guests peel back the husks, add butter, salt and pepper, and enjoy. Part of the traditional ritual had Dick bringing two corn stalks to a Rotary meeting, explaining to the pavement-pounders what all clod-hoppers know: the tall one was field corn, whereas the shorter stalk was sweet corn: pick the right corn! Sadly, after some 56 years, this year there will be no Rotarians picking the corn before 7 a.m. on July 29, no Burwash corn at the Roast. Dick passed away on November 10, 2012, at the age of 94. Champaign Rotarian Dan Wheatman has arranged for the corn to come from Schnuck s this year. So, the Corn Roast tradition continues, but an era has ended, never to be duplicated. WHEREAS!! as a remembrance and dedication to our Dear Friend and fellow Rotarian Mr. Richard Burwash We the Board of Director of the Champaign Rotary Club and all members here as same; will change the name of the "Corn Roast Event" to the "Burwash Memorial Corn Roast" From this point forward (Monday July 29th, 5;31 p.m.) and for all Presidents that come after to observe this event as same. The Burwash Family will receive the news via a phone call and in the Mail from Steve Carter who mentioned that they could not be here today. We will also create a plaque to be stationed here at Rotary Hill with this Memorial dedication.
