3 Ralph Northam beat Ed Gillespie in the governor s race 53.9 to 45 percent By comparison, Hillary Clinton won 52.8 percent of the two party portion of the 2016 vote to Donald Trump s 47.2 percent. What does this mean for 2018? Democrats surmise that 2018 is going to look more like 2006, a Democratic surge election Republicans need to keep promises if want it more like 1994, a Republican surge election since have won 7 House Races It s not uncommon for the president s party to lose the off-year Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races in the first year of the new administration. Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush also saw the opposition party sweep both races a year after their first elections. But what is unusual about Tuesday night is the extent to which the two races were about Trump. Trump s approval rating in Virginia was just 40 percent, according to the exit poll.
