Democrat Bernie Sanders and Republican Donald Trump swept to victory in Tuesday's New Hampshire presidential primaries. They added crucial credibility to their non-traditional candidacies. Their wins also underscored the insistence of voters in both parties on shaking up American politics.

2 While New Hampshire is known for its political surprises, Trump and Sanders led in the state for months. Still, both candidates needed to deliver on expectations after finishing second in last week's Iowa caucuses. In Iowa, Ted Cruz led the Republican field and Hillary Clinton narrowly edged out Sanders in the Democratic race. For some Republican leaders, Trump and Cruz's victories add urgency to the need to unite around a more mainstream candidate. However, it was unclear whether New Hampshire's contest would clarify just whom that candidate would be. Ohio Governor John Kasich, Florida Senator Marco Rubio and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush all are locked in a tight race with Cruz. Kasich wound up taking second place in New Hampshire, behind Trump.

3 Sanders, Clinton Voter Demographics A broad range of New Hampshire residents voted for Sanders. He received a majority of votes from men, women, independents and voters younger than 45, according to exit polls. These are surveys taken as voters leave their polling places. Clinton won the majority of voters older than 65 and those with incomes of more than $200,000 a year, according to early exit polls conducted by Edison Research for The Associated Press and the television networks. Clinton's campaign argues she will perform better as the race heads to more racially diverse states, including Nevada and South Carolina. Both New Hampshire and Iowa are overwhelmingly white and are far less diverse than the nation as a whole. "A Democrat who is unable to inspire strong levels of support in minority communities will have no credible path to winning the presidency in the general election," said Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook. He made his comments in a memo released as the polls closed. Democrats And Republicans Want Change Sanders is a self-described Democratic socialist, who wants free health care and free higher education. Trump is a real estate mogul who has never held a political office. Both have tapped into the public's frustration with the current political system. Even if neither candidate ultimately becomes his party's nominee, whoever does will have to reckon with those groups of dissatisfied voters. Nearly half of voters in the Republican primary made up their minds about whom to vote for in the past week. Republican voters felt more negatively about their politicians than Democrats. About half of Republican voters said they felt betrayed by party officials. In a sign of Trump's influence on the race, two-thirds of GOP voters said they support a ban on Muslims entering the United States. The billionaire announced this position last year amid rising fears of terrorism coming from the Middle East. Crass Over Substance? After finishing behind Cruz in Iowa last week, Trump accepted some of the more traditional trappings of presidential campaigns. He spoke in smaller town halls with voters. Still, he closed the final full day of campaigning with a vulgar insult about Cruz. The Texas senator brushed off Trump's comments. He said the reason Trump uses insults "is because he can't discuss the substance." The large Republican field was narrowed down after Iowa as several candidates dropped out. Still a crowded group of more traditional Republican candidates remain, including Rubio and the governors.

4 Kasich Keeps It Positive Rubio appeared to be breaking away after a stronger-than-expected showing in Iowa, but he stumbled in Saturday's Republican debate under intense pressure from Chris Christie. The New Jersey governor has relentlessly portrayed the young senator as too inexperienced and too dependent on talking points to become president. At the debate, Rubio played into Christie's hands by responding with the same wellrehearsed line each time Christie challenged him. Rival campaigns hope it will make voters think twice before voting for him. Kasich has prided himself on avoiding attacks on his rivals. He said he hoped New Hampshire voters were "fed up with the negative."
