Public Relations Contact: Pat Smith (212) FOR RELEASE: APRIL 20, 2016 TRUMP LEADS, KASICH TOPS CRUZ IN CONNECTICUT GOP RACE, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS; WOMEN, BLACKS GIVE CLINTON LEAD AMONG DEMOCRATS Donald Trump is close to the 50 percent mark among Connecticut likely Republican primary voters, while Ohio Gov. John Kasich tops Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas in the race for second place, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. A percent lead among black likely Democratic primary voters and a wide margin among women Democrats propel former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to a percent lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. Another 6 percent remain undecided and 18 percent of those who name a candidate say they might change their mind. Likely Republican primary voters give Trump 48 percent, with 28 percent for Kasich and 19 percent for Cruz. Only 5 percent are undecided, but 25 percent of those who name a candidate say they might change their mind before the April 26 primary. By percent, Connecticut Republicans want an outsider for president, rather than someone experienced in politics. Among those who want an outsider 75 percent back Trump. Connecticut Republicans have gone for outsider candidates such as Linda McMahon and Tom Foley. They continue that trend with Donald Trump, said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, PhD. The conventional wisdom that Sen. Cruz is too conservative for Connecticut looks true, as he comes in a distant third in the Republican primary. Kasich clearly is outpacing Cruz for second, but running well behind Trump. Secretary Hillary Clinton wins on all the most important issues to voters, except for income inequality. Sen. Bernie Sanders wins on honesty, values, and empathy. But Clinton wins by bigger margins on leadership, electability, and experience. -more-

2 Quinnipiac University Poll/April 20, 2016 page 2 Among Connecticut likely Republican primary voters, Trump gets 51 percent of men, with 27 percent for Kasich and 18 percent for Cruz. Women go 45 percent for Trump, 30 percent for Kasich and 20 percent for Cruz. Trump gets 62 percent of Tea Party members, with Cruz at 24 percent and Kasich at 12 percent. Trump also gets 37 percent of white born-again Evangelical Christians, with Cruz at 31 percent and Kasich at 30 percent. Trump leads among very conservative and somewhat conservative voters and gets 42 percent of moderate/liberal Republicans to Kasich s 41 percent. Kasich takes 39 percent of Republican voters 18 to 44 years old, with 32 percent for Trump and 27 percent for Cruz. Trump leads among older voters. A total of 56 percent of Republicans have a strongly favorable or somewhat favorable opinion of Trump, with 37 percent somewhat or strongly unfavorable. Kasich gets a percent favorability rating with Cruz at a negative percent score. Clinton-Sanders There are wide gender and racial gaps among likely Democratic primary voters as women back Clinton percent while men are divided, with 50 percent for Sanders and 45 percent for Clinton. White voters are divided with 49 percent for Clinton and 47 percent for Sanders, while black voters back Clinton percent. Sanders leads percent among very liberal Democrats. Somewhat liberal Democrats go 51 percent for Clinton and 45 percent for Sanders. Moderate/conservative Democrats back Clinton percent. Sanders leads percent among voters years old, while Clinton leads among older Democrats. A total of 67 percent of Democratic voters have a strongly or somewhat favorable opinion of Clinton, with 27 percent somewhat or strongly unfavorable. Sanders gets a percent favorability rating. From April 12 18, Quinnipiac University surveyed 823 Connecticut likely Republican primary voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points and 1,037 likely Democratic primary voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
