2 ARTNEWS Over 50 Years of Encouraging Original Fine Art! Art Shows - Art Workshops - Art News - Keeping You Informed AUGUST 2013 News Team: Bev Pullen, President bkpullen@hotmail.com - Sharon Somers, Newsletter Production schamb6@gmail.com President s Corner Dear Members, I hope your summer has been eventful. From time spent with grandchildren to family gatherings to gardening to weekend jaunts including an art fair or two, all seems to fill our precious June, July and August. In the midst of this busy time, IAL hosted its Annual Picnic. Be sure and check out the article and picture in this publication. If you have an unfamiliar serving spoon lurking in your silverware drawer from the picnic, give Deborah Christman a call. I brought yours home for safe keeping. It s just not a picnic without a spoon mix-up! As we ease out of summer into our fall schedules you can look forward to these activities: new exhibits, workshops, classes, regular art meetings, citywide celebration, and of course our annual dinner. A big thank you goes to our first-place Membership Show winners for exhibiting their works at the Peoria Heights Library. Those participating were: Todd Synder, Jeff Burton, Norman Hahn, Eloise Brown, Mary Hildebrand, and Barb Unes. Also, a special thanks to Brent Harter and Cheryl Madura. Brent s photography pieces and Cheryl s paintings rounded out the exhibit representing Illinois Art League. Starting Monday, August 12, Deborah Schmitt will be the featured exhibitor at the Peoria Heights Library. Her works are bold in color and form, so you don t want to miss this exhibit. If you are interested in showing your art, give Rose Sullivan a call, Coming this fall there will be a Citywide Celebration of Women Artists at community galleries, studios, colleges and organizations in Peoria, Peoria Heights, Dunlap and Morton. A more detailed description of this event is included. The Illinois Art League exhibit, Illinois Art League Women Artist Past and Present will be showing at the Peoria Heights Library, October 15 through November 15. We will host one of three receptions Friday, October 25. We are collaborating with Picture This Gallery and Exhibit A Gallery to provide an opportunity for the public to visit all three venues and meet all the artists. We are looking forward to seeing you at any of the upcoming events and we wish well to our artists who are in the news. Bev Pullen The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is - it s to imagine what is possible. - Bell Hooks 2

4 Illinois Art League s Membership Picnic July 15 th The IAL Picnic and get together was so much fun and the food was delicious. Some of us took advantage of the lovely park and did some painting and taking of photographs. Events like this are great since it gives us a chance to meet new members and just sit and chat with old friends. It s a time also, to exchange ideas and hear about what others have been working on. Even though it was warm out, we had a lovely breeze and beautiful trees to shade us. The food was a big plus as well, pull pork sandwiches, fruit, salads, chips and some out of this world delicious desserts. I would like to thank Bev and Wayne Pullen for all their work in organizing the event. I wish more of you could have joined us, believe me you missed a really good time. - Linda Sprouse CALENDAR OF EVENTS: IAL BOARD MEETING: Monday Sept 9th Peoria Heights Library 5:30-7:30. 5 Citywide Celebration of Women Artists a collaboration of community arts and history organizations When: October 15 to November 15, 2013 Where: Peoria Heights Library Who: IAL WOMEN ARTISTS PAST AND PRESENT Details from Illinois Women Artists Project: This fall two conventions will bring visitors from Illinois and other Midwestern states to Peoria. The Illinois Association of Museums holds its annual conference here from October 16-19, and Bradley University and the Illinois Women Artists Project hold their biennial symposium on early Midwest women artists on November 7 and 8. And, October is National Arts and Humanities Month. So, tying it together, the Illinois Women Artists Project came up with the idea of holding a Citywide Celebration of Women Artists from October 15 thru November 15. We're inviting community organizations to develop exhibits in their galleries that feature the works of contemporary and/or historical women artists. Maps and podcasts for symposium, convention and community visitors will be available; tours will be organized for symposium visitors. WTVP will be helping us get the word out by preparing spots that will air before and during the Celebration time. Hidden Treasures segments on WCBU will feature artists from the participating groups. ArtsPartners is working with this event as well. We'll have a unique opportunity for promoting the arts in our community, and a great chance for individual and collaborative programming, to say nothing of showing amazing works by women artists. Community partners to date who will feature women-based art: Bradley University's Heuser and Hartmann galleries, CIAO at the Prairie Center of the Arts, the Contemporary Art Center, Exhibit A Gallery, Jefferson Street Studio and Gallery, Pearce Gallery, Peoria Art Guild, Peoria Heights Library/Illinois Art League, Peoria Library, Peoria Riverfront Museum, Peoria Women's Club, Peoria Historical Society, Picture This Gallery. If you are interested in participating at the Peoria Heights Library Exhibit IAL WOMEN ARTISTS PAST AND PRESENT Oct 15th Nov 15th you must meet the following criteria: 1. If you participate at Peoria Heights, you cannot participate in any of the partner City Wide Celebrations. 2. You must be present for the reception Friday Oct 25th Peoria Heights Library 3-5 pm. 3. You can exhibit only 1 piece for this event. For additional information: Bev Pullen or bkpullen@hotmail.com
