1 November 2013 Volume 25 Number 2 Aladdin Villas* is a 55 and over community News & Views Website: aladdinvillas.org avnewsviews@hotmail.com Hey, ya ll Welcome back to Texas! When I reformatted the newsletter last month, I misspelled the address for the News and Views. I have corrected it above, my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone! I have tried to update the ecopy list for the News & Views for those who wish to only get the newsletter online, and do not want to receive a hard copy delivered to their home. If you recently purchased your home and do not receive a hard copy and want one, it is because the prior owner was on the list. Let me know either through an or a note left for me at the office or on my front patio at 513 Jupiter and I will make sure you get your copy delivered. Should you need to contact me by phone, please note that my number in the 2013 phone book is INCORRECT! Thank you to Patty Dybdall for taking all my calls this month! My phone number is (956) Your Editor, Kathy Dickey Christmas Program It is time to put on the Aladdin Villas Christmas Program and our producers/ directors again this year are Dave and Rosemary Tucker! The screenplay has yet to be determined by they are looking for people to help and participate in the program. If you missed out on the fun last year, hurry up and give the Tuckers a call or ! Signup sheets are in the ballroom. Price is $4.00 per person, with turkey and gravy furnished. How can you beat that deal? First person on the list is the hostess and will contact everyone on that table to discuss the menu for that table prior to the week of Thanksgiving. Contact Sharon Rusher for information. The Veteran s Day luncheon was well attended this year. The food was great and so was the entertainment. Sharyland High School ROTC presented the flags as crisply as always. The Senior Ambassador singing group led the audience in the National Anthem and a medley of service songs. The highlight of the luncheon was the winning essays. What Does Veteran s Day Mean to Me, read by seniors from local high schools. It is definitely nice to see young people with such a clear understanding of what it means to be a military veteran as well as family member of a veter- Pictured from left to right: Ron Santerre, Manual Mata, Savannah Bledsoe, Brenda Garcia, Jesus Montemayor, Amanda Saenz, Esmerelda Saenz an. The winners included Brenda Garcia, Mission Collegiate H.S., Savannah Bledsoe, Veteran s Memorial H.S, and Amanda Saenz, Mission H.S. These young adults talked with passion about patriotism, how men and women who serve should be honored, and appreciated every day for how the troops have defended the freedoms that many take for granted. Their parents and teachers should be proud of the citizens they are molding! Brenda s teacher was Jesus Montemayor, Savannah s was Manual Mata, and Amanda s was her mother, Esmerelda Saenz. Channel 5 News was here after the readings to interview the winners of this contest. We should all be proud to live in an area where the young people are so passionate about veterans and what they have sacrificed. Kathy Dickey 1

3 Thank you! Thanks to those who helped collate the News & Views for the month of October. They were Joanne Bolton, Joanne Remsing, Nan Bishop and Shari Chisholm. Emily Champagne We had a very nice looking hall for our Veteran s Day celebration and as usual things went very well. I want to thank John & Nancy Stranges for the cups, napkins and the signs for the tables, Dick & Ann Briscoe and all who helped set up the tables. Margaret wants to thank all the ladies who helped prepare the tables, Gary Elliott for the 50/50, Louise Pfhal for selling tickets, and of course Joe Kalway for having the keys; without him we could not have gotten into the cabinets. Dick Peer and his kitchen crew, wow what a great meal, maybe we should make them the perpetual kitchen crew. Judy Alexander for her vocals, the Senior Ambassadors and Kathy Holtz and her helpers for our great decorations, Ron & Pat Turany for being our greeters, Joe Langam & Bruce Pfahl, Leroy Kloch our bellringer, Dave Matson for opening the doors at 9 AM and thank you all for coming. Oh I almost forgot, Frank Unger for providing the invocation but he always charges me for his services. If I forgot someone please accept my apologies! Ron Santerre PETER PIPER PIZZA - NEW DATE! MONDAY, NOV. 18 TH 3 AARP Driver Safety The AARP Driver Safety class, formerly known as 55 Alive will be held in the Hacienda Room on Tuesday, December 10 from 8:00 AM to noon. This is the four hour course which is all that we are allowed to teach here in Texas. For those insurance companies that honor the defensive driving discount, and accept the four hour course, this satisfies their requirements. If you are interested in taking the course there is a registration sheet in the Ballroom. Also, please bring your driver s license, AARP card if a member and a check made out to AARP for $12 if you are an AARP member and $14 if you are not. Mah Jongg players please join us in the library every Tuesday at 1 pm. If you're interested in learning this wonderful game, please give me a call or write to me at: susijs@austin.rr.com I'd be glad to set up a teach if I get a few people who want to learn. Sue Schaffer Christmas is just around the corner. A volunteer is needed to coordinate decorating the Ballroom, Library and Hacienda rooms for the Christmas season. There are decorations available. All that is needed is a small group to put them up and take them down after Christmas. If you are interested, please contact Siri Higgs at The date for November Peter Piper Pizza has been moved a week later to November 18th to avoid a conflict with the Veterans Day celebration at Aladdin. Please join Aladdin Villas residents for an all-you-can-eat pizza and salad bar lunch held at the Peter Piper Pizza located in the northwest quadrant of Two Mile Road and north Conway (107). It s about 4.2 miles from Aladdin Villas and the easiest route is to take Stewart Road north past the lights at Bus. 83 and Griffin Parkway up to the stop sign at 2 Mile Road. Turn left and follow 2 Mile Road. Peter Piper will be on your right just past the stoplights at Conway. Those having birthdays and anniversaries during the month will be recognized. Cake and ice cream will also be served and a drawing for fun prizes is included. It s a great deal about $5.50 for pizza, salad, cake & ice cream, and if you purchase a Peter Piper mug your beverage is free any time you come with the mug. You can also order off the menu. No sign up is necessary just show up for fun and fellowship with your A.V. neighbors. Please wear your Aladdin name badges. The next Peter Piper dates ( all Mondays at 11:30 a.m.) are: November 18 th, December 9 th, and January 13 th. Mark your calendar now and come and join us. Gloria & Ray Cekalla
