Seems like only yesterday we were planning our spring trip to the Grand Canyon. Now that the weather has turned wetter and colder, we all need to be more cautious when out riding and beware of those wet leaves and mossy roads. The holidays are also coming up and along with them are the many annual toy rides, Portland on December 1st and Albany December 2nd to name just two of them, so be sure and take some time out of your busy schedule and try to get out and ride on one of them, the smiles on the young children's faces make for a great day! Hope to see all of you at our annual Christmas party, sounds like the Oregon Gardens has a wonderful dinner planned for us. 3 Safety Officer Corner By Jim Johnson OK the nice Indian Summer has passed. So what do we get to ride in till next May? Well that depends on you. As I write this it is 60 and partly sunny. (I think there is a problem with this picture). Forecast for the next couple of days leads me to believe that riding will be good. So let s talk about being prepared! You plan for a decent day. You leave the house with what survival equipment? Heated gear; have it on but not plugged in? Good! Remember that heated gear needs only a long sleeve shirt when you have it working. With your leathers that is probably plenty of clothes. Gloves: if that is the only heated gear on that s good. Warm hands really make a difference in rider comfort. Wind shirt, what is that? A shirt designed to block wind. Many different types. That is an article of clothes that is always in my saddle bags. If no heated gear, then a good thermal or now cold gear mock or full turtle neck shirt. Maybe a long sleeve shirt or sweat shirt and heavy jacket. How about one of those multi purpose neck and face tube like motleys. They come in different weights. THIS MAY HELP YOU ACTUALLY TURN YOUR HEAD TO SEE LEFT AND RIGHT, INSTEAD OF JUST PERIPHERAL VISION. More safe. Good rain gear. I prefer GORETEX. Make sure that it is a size that can fit over your non water proof jacket. Even a well dressed leather jacket may leak. Speaking of leather and dressing, make sure your leathers are well dressed. There are several leather dressings available. Someone told me to paraffin wax my brass zippers. It works, they will run smoother and last longer. Eye protection; your choice: goggles, half or full face shields, all types of helmets with shields, transitional glasses, and any combination there of. OH, BY THE WAY, it gets dark earlier, so plan shorter rides and or leave earlier. Does this sound familiar or have you thought of this yourself? I m just reminding you of what you may have forgotten, and by writing this I am also reminded. OH, I did forget one thing.your ride. Good rubber, lights, brakes, and driver. Enjoy winter riding, not as much front brake, stay off applied street markings, keep a safe distance back from the vehicle in front of you, plan your cornering, and be SMOOTH on the quick reactions. ENJOY!!! 3

5 Albany s Veteran s Day Parade Hundreds of people marching and thousands more cheering from the sidelines for military members in Albany as the city says welcome home and thank you to veterans in one of the largest parades on the west coast. The parade is led by motorcycles each year Around 30 to 40 thousand people packed downtown Albany on Saturday, November 10th, 2012 for the city s 61st annual Veterans Day parade. Many refer to the parade as the largest west of the Mississippi River. Visually, it appears that the numbers back that. More than 250 floats took part in Saturday s parade. About 5,000 people marched in the ceremony. 5

12 HOG BITS Welcome to our New Member: Blake Lee If you see Blake at a meeting...make sure you stop and say hello! Mark s Daughter Rachel, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year just had an MRI and it showed (drum roll) NO signs of the tumor and NO more chemotherapy! She continues to be in our prayers. ANSWERS TO VETERAN S DAY QUIZ ANSWER #1: Armistice Day Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day. It was originally meant to honor World War I veterans. Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution and became a national holiday 12 years later. Realizing that peace was equally preserved by veterans of WW II and Korea, Congress decided to honor those who have served America in all wars. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day. ANSWER #2: 19 Million There are actually more than 19 million war veterans in the United States, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. This includes veterans from World Wars I and II, as well as the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. Imagine 380 football stadiums full of people and you've got the picture. That's a lot of veterans! ANSWER #3: Fly The American Flag The best way to honor veterans is to fly the American flag. The flag is flown to show respect for American veterans, and is a symbol of their service to the country. Some people celebrate the holiday by attending ceremonial flag raisings and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. ANSWER: #4: 48 Stars There were 48 stars on the American flag in 1954, one for each of the continental states. After Alaska joined the union in 1959, the flag had 49 stars. A year later, when Hawaii joined the union, the flag got its 50th star--and it has looked the same ever since. ANSWER #5: End of World War I November 11 marks the end of World War I. To be more precise, fighting officially ended at 11 AM, November 11, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month! On November 11, 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, became the focal point of reverence for America's veterans. 12
13 Wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you are spending it with family or friends and are thankful for all your blessings. NOTE: With the cold weather here, there are not many rides and therefore not many pictures or articles to add in the newsletter. If you have any rides, articles, photos, jokes, quotes, new bike, something for sale, etc., you would like to contribute to the newsletter, please send it to me. I am sure the newsletter will be much smaller than the normal summer months. Thanks ~ stay warm and ride careful. Without your writings and photographs, there is no Hog Corral Newsletter! The Chapter Officers generally have some information that needs passed on to Chapter members but the real interesting stories comes from YOU the Chapter members, so send in your road stories, tell us about your Harley, anything that your fellow Harley riders may find interesting. And don t worry about spelling and grammar! I can sort that for you just get your thoughts down on paper. Please, in the subject line put what it s for. Example: If you put Poker Run there might be 2-3 Poker Runs that month, so please put Salem Poker Run, or Silverton Poker Run. Due to space I may occasionally have to reduce the amount of words submitted, but will print articles in their entirety, if possible. Images may be cropped artistically to fit the layout. I would ask that you submit all text and images in electronic format by to: editor@salemhog.org. I use a PC using Adobe Publisher for the desktop publishing, Adobe Photoshop to import and manipulate images and Microsoft Word to import your text. Final Note: I cannot emphasize enough that your magazine will be a shadow of what it could be without your involvement. Tell us about your latest ride, your bike, technical tips, latest tattoo in fact anything connected to the worlds of bikes and riders and don t forget the pictures! Just as the ole saying goes a pictures worth a thousand words. 13
