The purpose of a newsletter is to provide specialized information to a targeted audience. Newsletters can be a great way to market your product or service, and also create credibility and build your organization s identity among peers, members, employees, or vendors. First, determine the audience of the newsletter. This could be anyone who might benefit from the information it contains, for example, employees or people interested in purchasing a product or requesting your service. You can compile a mailing list from business reply cards, customer information sheets, business cards collected at trade shows, or membership lists. You might consider purchasing a mailing list from a company. If you explore the Publisher catalog, you will find many publications that match the style of your newsletter. Next, establish how much time and money you can spend on your newsletter. These factors will help determine how frequently you publish the newsletter and its length. It s recommended that you publish your newsletter at least quarterly so that it s considered a consistent source of information. Your customers or employees will look forward to its arrival. 3 VOLUME 23, ISSUE 1 New Officers 2012 The new year brings new officers to many of the positions of our chapter. Mark Dostal has assumed the helm: director for the coming couple of years. His second-incommand is Dana Johnston, new to Salem HOG this year, but known to many of us as the leader of the Albany Pioneer HOG chapter. Dana s wife Kym Johnston is our chapter secretary, a duty she attained late last year. Rounding out the primary officers is Bob Wiro, who continues as our treasurer. Other board members include Louise Schuening as membership coordinator, Karen Brown migrating out of the webmaster into new duties as the newsletter editor, Loni Barrett picking up the webmaster duties, Craig Gilmore continuing as the head road captain, Jim Johnson persevering as safety officer, Keith Harris still snapping photos for our posterity, Jeanette Beatty sharing activity duties with Louise Schuening, and Joanne Dostal recording our events and activities as historian. Please be sure to recognize your new board of directors. They will need your help in the coming year, so lend a hand if they need some assistance to complete their duties. 5 VOLUME 23, ISSUE 1 The RV park we found: the name was so inviting. That is I-8 you see in the back ground. We slept with earplugs! Yuma is not the Shangri La of motorcycling Bob and Karen Brown hit the road for a winter riding vacation in December. Destination: Yuma, Arizona. It took us four days to drive there, and it was the rainiest day Yuma had in two years when we arrived... A record for the day at over an inch on December 12. The next morning, fog brought the visibility down to a tenth of a mile. The residents couldn t remember the last time it was foggy in Yuma. And Yumans don t know how to drive in the fog. The freeway (I-8) had traffic at the usual 80 miles an hour, and most drivers didn t turn on their lights. Sure it was daytime, but get real! The fog was thick! Someone might want to see you in all that mist...turn on your head- lights! Yikes! Options for our routes were limited, due to our reliance on GPS, but we got off the freeway as soon as they discovered how treacherous it was. But we had gone south seeking the sunshine, and were rewarded. The fog burned off by around noon, and we found the Harley-Davidson dealership to be inviting. Eventually it got up to the high 60s, and the next several days were bright. The area is the salad bowl of the country that time of year. Much of the farmland was planted in lettuce, broccoli, spinach and herbs. Harvesting left a good deal of mud clods on the roads, but they were mostly flat and open. We went on a fun run sponsored by the Yuma HOG chapter. A veterans appreciation event, to the VFW and American Legion posts in the area. One leg was described as Beautiful! Lots of curves. But watch out because they are doing lots of harvesting out there in Dome Valley. They have a different idea of curves in Yuma. The road was flat...and the curves were 90 degree turns every mile and a half or so property line boundaries. They ought to take a drive up Alsea Summit some day if they want to see some curves! All in all, the trip was fun, but the Yuma area is not the Shangri La we were searching for. Maybe we will try the Salton Sea next year. Karen Brown Page 5
