Safety Officer s Corner By Jim Johnson Now is the time to think about winter maintenance for your bike (cage too). The fluids and filters are dirty from summer riding. Time for a service. Don't forget about tires. Roads will be getting slippery so tread will be important for cornering and acceleration. Oh yea, don't forget the rain and winter riding gear. Make sure leathers are dressed for maximum protection. Eye protection needs attention too, that includes drop down face shields. There are some rain beading applications that work well for both eye wear and windshields. Have you been putting off some repairs that MAY or MAY NOT be essential during the summer riding months (but really should be dealt with)? During the slow times in the service departments & maybe some deals, it might be a good time to have these done. For those thinking that it is too miserable to ride in the wet and cold, maybe it s time to upgrade your winter gear. Christmas is almost upon us and what a wonderful thought to make that purchase of heated gear for your riding partner; or to put on your wish list. Ride safe and defensively while using common sense! Jim 3

HOG Website Tutorial SalemHOG.org Website Updates This article is to recap some recent updates and changes at the SalemHOG.org website. There have been a number of changes to the site recently so please take a moment to review this information. You can always contact me (webmaster@salemhog.org) in the event you have any problems. RECENT UPDATES LOGIN: You may log in at the home page. Your username is your first and last name with no space (ex: LoniBarrett). Your password is your National HOG number (ex: US ). You may see an error notice the first time you try to log in. Ignore that notice and log in again. Make sure you check the "remember me" checkbox. 5

HOG Website Tutorial CALENDAR: You can view our events calendar for dates and times. Click the link and expanded details will pop up in a new window. You may submit events for the calendar by to webmaster@salemhog.org. Please be sure to include the event specifics and any website URL or contact information for more information. 6

HOG Website Tutorial HOG FORUM: You can read and participate in forum discussions. This is a great place to announce events, show off photos or videos of your most recent rides or look for ride buddies on short notice. Check it out and get involved in the discussions! 7

HOG Website Tutorial HOG CLASSIFIEDS: The Salem HOG Classifieds are for members only. Sell your Harley-Davidson motorcycles, parts, accessories or related items here. VIDEOS: Video is rapidly becoming a medium of choice on the Internet, so this is a new addition to the Salem HOG website. You may send your video submissions to me and I will upload them to the website. If you have uploaded your video to YouTube or a similar video site, give me the video URL and I will add it to our site. There is a lot of content on the website including newsletters, photos, archives, officer data, safety information, and much more. Take a look at your website and let me know if there are other features you would like to see included. 8

HOG Website Tutorial PHOTO UPLOADS: TROUBLESHOOTING Photos must be 1 megabytes or less in file size. Many cameras take very high resolution photos by default. If we added these huge photos to our site we would rapidly exceed server space quota and we would cause the website to load VERY slowly, which would be frustrating to viewers. I am looking for software that will automatically resize photos for us (like Facebook does). In the meantime, if you have difficulty uploading a photo and can't figure out the reason, send it to me by and I will determine the cause. Check out the photo galleries on the website! There are thousands of photos online and many recent event photos have been published as well. Please send your photo submissions to me for the website. Alternately, if you publish the photos online you can provide me with the location and I can obtain them online. Director Dana Johnston has proposed that we create a members photo upload area. I think that's a great idea and I am investigation software that will allow us to do so. RESET OR RECOVER PASSWORD: ("Lost Your Password?" Link) or go directly to You can reset your password by entering your username or address and the system will send an with a password reset link. You are free to change your password at any time. If you cannot log in or experience any username/password problems please contact me by . NEW MEMBERS: If you are a new member and I have not added you to the website please contact me and I will add you as quickly as possible. Many areas of the website are accessible to members only so let me know if you need our username and password set up. OTHER ISSUES: The website seems to be very stable, however, problems sometimes arise. Don't hesitate to notify me of problems, or request assistance. 9

HOG Website Tutorial MEMBER PARTICIPATION This website belongs to all members of Salem HOG. Please take a little time to participate. Use the forums and classifieds. Submit photos and videos. Let us know what features you would like added or other ideas to make the site more user friendly. If you are not comfortable (or familiar) with the technology let me know and I will provide assistance so you can get around in the site. ~ Loni CONTACT YOUR WEBMASTER Loni Barrett HOG webmaster@salemhog.org Personal lonibarrett@live.com (home phone) 10

SPEED (or the lack of) HURTS!!! We re near the summit of Beartooth Pass trying to keep the accident victims warm and hydrated. Both of them are wrapped in heavy sleeping bags even though it s August, it s chilly at almost 11,000 feet. We scooped up snow and packed it in a zip -lock bag to make ice packs for the broken bones. The husband has some badly bruised ribs and probably a concussion. His wife definitely has a broken arm and both have scrapes, cuts, and other pains. Their Electra-Glide has a broken saddlebag and tour-pak, major rock rash on the tank and fairing, and assorted scratches to the entire right side. We came downhill around a curve and watched the accident happen right in front of us. They were going too slowly around a sharp right-hander, lost steerageway, and went off the road on the inside of the curve. Now he s on a dirt shoulder (and that s a very generous term) about 14 inches wide, with a sharp drop-off on the right and a 3 inch lip to get back up on the pavement. He gave it a little gas and tried to ride it out, looking for a way to get up on the road, while fighting three problems: the soft dirt he s on; the high lip to get back on the road; and the drop-off that is increasingly high, sharp and rocky. So which got them in the end? Well, it took one more obstacle to start the cascade. This one rock, about the size and shape of a large man s foot from the ankle down. It was loosely set in the dirt, with the sole upward and the toes toward the dropoff. As he ran over the toes, the heel popped up and his front tire slid off the shoulder. As it went over the drop, the bike side-sided them (flipped over to the side) and catapulted the riders down onto the boulders. You wouldn t think these two had any good luck, but this is where two pieces of luck came their way. First, they hit and rolled down about 15 feet while the fully-loaded bagger only went about nine feet; so the bike didn t smash into them. Second, if they had gone off just a few feet forward, they wouldn t have rolled clear. 26

SPEED (or the lack of) HURTS!!! Waiting for them was a large, flat-sided boulder that would have stopped their roll in more ways than one and held them until their faithful 1100 pound dog named Harley pinned them there. That was the end of their luck, though. We didn t have cell service or even a satellite phone and it took 30 minutes for a passerby to reach a ranger station to report the accident. Then it took another 2.5 hours for the ambulance and paramedics to arrive up there. The worst part, of course, was seeing their E-Glide almost upside down on a bed of boulders waiting to be dragged up the hill and hoisted to a repair shop. Could this have been prevented? I don t know if there was an emergent medical issue that caused him to lose focus and slow down too much, or an equipment problem, but he was going so slowly he lost the gyroscopic effect and went all wobbly. Maybe he needed a pep talk from Margaret Thatcher (you might have to be an old Cold War Warrior who remembers President Reagan to get that one). Remember, it s not just the cagers trying to kill you!!! ~ Bryce Campbell 27

Superman uses his powers for the betterment of mankind! Sometimes, NOT using his powers is the best decision!! Without your writings and photographs, there is no Hog Corral Newsletter! The Chapter Officers generally have some information that needs passed on to Chapter members but the real interesting stories comes from YOU the Chapter members, so send in your road stories, tell us about your Harley, anything that your fellow Harley riders may find interesting. And don t worry about spelling and grammar! I can sort that for you; just get your thoughts down on paper. In the subject line, please put what it s for. Example: If you put Poker Run there might be 2-3 Poker Runs that month, so please put Salem Poker Run, or Silverton Poker Run. Due to space, I may occasionally have to reduce the amount of words submitted. I will print articles in their entirety, if at all possible. Images may be cropped artistically to fit the layout. I would ask that you submit all text and images in electronic format by to: editor@salemhog.org. I use a PC using Adobe Publisher for the desktop publishing, Adobe Photoshop to import and manipulate images and Microsoft Word to import your text. Final Note: I cannot emphasize enough that your magazine will be a shadow of what it could be without your involvement. Tell us about your latest ride, your bike, technical tips, latest tattoo in fact anything connected to the worlds of bikes and riders and don t forget the pictures! Just as the ole saying goes a pictures worth a thousand words. 29
