2 Airways Hamilton ASHRAE Chapter November 2004 Technical Session Allan Antcliffe, P. Eng. Madok Manufacturing Limited This month's Technical Session Heating and Cooling Coils 101 will discuss heating and cooling coil basics including how a coil is built. Allan has been involved in the HVAC/R industry for 28 years with KeepRite and more recently as owner of Madok. October Meeting Recap What a turnaround a month makes. Without the World Cup as competition and with a topic as current as building controls, the attendance more than doubled! Unfortunately, Wilf did not have confirmation of that large a group or we would have used the larger room. Next month, the theme for the program is industrial and we expect a large number again so please assist Wilf by replying via to his attendance request. I reported on the latest efforts of the Handbook committee on enhancements for the upcoming volumes that will be included on the CD+ version. This will include graphics, hot formulas and links that the respective TC responsible for the chapter (almost 200 chapters in the 4 volumes) will add as the volume is revised. The CD version of the volume can have annual revisions but the ASHRAE official version is still the print volume and the revisions can only be changed in that format every four years. Brian Beninger reported on our plans for a special December 11 th Saturday afternoon outing at the Niagara Falls Aviary. Please set aside this date on your calendar for this unique experience. Frank Mesicek (Airon HVAC and Control) started the evening off with the Technical Session talking about incorporating an electronic control system with an existing pneumatic control system. After dinner, he held the audience for the best part of two hours with an explanation of the LonWorks Open System in building controls. We are happy to report that Chris McClelland has been able to return to the executive but is still waiting for surgery on his knee as the result of his Herculean effort at sliding into third base (you don't want to hear the details). Bill McCartney, President 04/05 2

Business Card Ad $75.00 for One Year If you are interested, contact Allan Antcliffe This space could be yours! Double Size Ad Business or Product Advertising $ for One Year (includes $15.00 Setup Charge) Changes can be made at any time for an additional $15.00 Setup Charge If you are interested, contact Allan Antcliffe This column is the first of what I hope will be a monthly tip concerning all things computer. The idea came to me after I wrote the covering blurb that went out with the Airways last month. Some of our members were having problems accessing the Airways pdf file on our web site. The cause of the problem turned out to be that the Airways pdf file created by our newsletter editor's program was unreadable by some members. I tried using a little program called CutePDF which I found on the internet and had been using for years to recreate the Airways file and this solved most of the problems our members were having. I had some positive feedback for identifying this useful program so I thought I'd try coming up with another this month. Before I get on to November's tip, I am including a reprint of last month's tip in case you want to try CutePDF. From October's Airways covering "... By the way, the program we are now using to create Airways pdf files is called CutePDF & it is f ree at If you want to create your own pdf files, give it a try. When installed on your computer, CutePDF appears as a printer in your printer list. All you have to do to create a pdf document from any program (Word, Excel, AutoCAD etc.) is print to the CutePDF "printer". Instead of directing the output of your program to a real printer, CutePDF creates a pdf document file instead which you can then view with Acrobat reader. It is a slick program with no annoying pop-ups or nagging advertisements - one of my personal favorite downloaded freebies.... ". Now for the new tip of the month. I don't know what you do when you have to convert units, but I used to have many sources: old reference books, ASHRAE handbooks, handwritten stuff I'd collected over the years etc. Then came the internet. Now there are a multitude of web sites you can visit which provide on-line conversion of one unit to another. I'll not list them here but go to your favorite search engine (google, dogpile are a couple of good ones), search on "unit conversion" and you will be swamped with links. Then you too can learn that 1 furlong/fortnight 2 = meters/second 2. These sites are all useful however I found another downloadable program that does the same thing. Its easy to use and once it is installed on your computer, you don't have to be connected to the internet to use it. And best of all its free from the good people at Quad-Lock Insulating Concrete Forms. You can find it at Remember, when you use any of these programs, to read all licenses, disclaimers etc. that accompany them. Brian Beninger, P.Eng., Webmaster 04/05 3
