1 1 Focus on ASHRAE Technology & Membership Education Volume 58, Issue 2 October 2016 President s Message Hello Nebraska ASHRAE member, The past few weeks have been refreshing, as summer quietly transitions into fall. I want to extend a thank you to all those who attended last month s meeting about Natatorium Design. I apologize that our meeting ran a little long. This month we are going to allow attendees who arrive early to start going through the buffet at 11:45 am, so the speaker can start on time. I m happy to share that the Nebraska Chapter was awarded $1,250 of Society President Tim Wentz s Chapter Opportunity Fund. The Chapter Opportunity Fund is money set aside for chapters to use in a meaningful, creative way to energize their chapter and/or to improve their communities by demonstrating the impact of ASHRAE. Because the Nebraska Chapter has struggled with membership growth over the past five years, our proposal was to use our portion of the fund to develop a display booth that could be used to promote ASHRAE and encourage membership at various events, including E-week, career fairs, science fairs, and other opportunities that arise. We will create a committee to oversee this activity, so if this is something you may be interested in helping with, please let me or another board member know. Our next major event is the highly anticipated 2016 ASHRAE Trapshoot Contest at the Papillion Gun Club. The event will take place on Thursday, October 20 at 1 pm. All money raised at the trapshoot goes toward the ASHRAE Student Scholarship Fund. Please see the attached flyer for registration information. Speaking of scholarships, if you are a student member or have a college engineering student in your life, ASHRAE (at the society level) has various scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 available. Scholarship applications are now being accepted and must be submitted by December 1, 2016, for consideration. For additional information, visit scholarships. The next Omaha Section chapter meeting is October 11 th at Steakhouse. Note that the Lincoln Section is hosting Octourfest on October 12 th at the CRES Plant with happy hour to follow. 2 2 October Meetings OMAHA Rooftop Optimization Strategies & Technology with Tuesday, October 11th, 2016 Dr. Lixia Wu Steakhouse Buffet ($18) Dr. Lixia Wu is currently the Director of Engineering at Bes-Tech, Inc. Before that she worked at the Energy System Lab at UNL. She earned her Ph.D. degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Architectural Engineering program in 2010 with an emphasis on automated supervisory control optimization and linearization for HVAC&R systems. Dr. Wu has worked on various building commissioning and retrofit projects in various phases from energy audits to project implementation to after care during the last six years. Since joining Bes-Tech, Lixia lead the engineering team to help clients on cost-effective energy conservation projects for various medical, institutional, and commercial facilities with different energy management systems. Those projects have achieved 15%-55% energy savings with a typical payback of 3 to 4 years. They will be competing against other schools to see who can complete the most energy assessments within their area. 5 GRASSROOTS GOVERNMENT ADVOCACY US House of Representatives Passes Bipartisan Legislation to Improve Workforce Preparedness Earlier this week, the US House of Representatives passed by an overwhelming vote of405 to 5, the bipartisan Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (H.R.5587), which would reauthorize the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act through Fiscal Year 2022, and provide increased support for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. ASHRAE commends members of the US House of Representatives for passing this bipartisan bill that would modernize career and technical education and provide renewed strength that will prepare students for in-demand careers, said ASHRAE President Tim Wentz in the Society's press release. We strongly encourage the Senate to build on these efforts and take bold action to provide further support for STEM education. Such action would help meet the workforce pipeline need for an estimated 115,000 new HVACR technicians by 2022, which will be created through growth and retirements. While the outlook remains uncertain, it appears unlikely that the Senate will act this year on similar legislation, which means that discussions will continue into the next Congress. EPA Acting Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation Speaks on the Federal Government's Role in Indoor Air Quality at IAQ 2016 Conference The activities of the Federal government regarding IAQ can be challenging to parse, yet they are important to understand. Helping to improve this situation, Janet McCabe, the US Environmental Protection Agency s (EPA) Acting Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation, recently joined Cole Stanton of the Indoor Air Quality Association, and Mark Ames of ASHRAE to discuss how Congress, the Federal government, and States endeavor to improve indoor air quality at the IAQ 2016 Conference in Alexandria, Virginia. In the near future this panel discussion, along with others from the conference will be available online.
