2 The Prez Notes By Art Nicholson The August meeting was my first as president, and, to those who were there, thanks for pretending I knew what I was doing, especially in front of our special guest, just-retired president Tom Sprawls. Actually, it was great to see all of your shining faces at the meeting, both new and old. We welcomed six new members, and three members renewed their vows, I mean, memberships. Thanks, guys! I think it s an exciting time to be a part of the Alamo Squadron IPMS. At the August meeting, Rick Warring gave a great demonstration on the finer points of building 1/700 ships and 1/144 aircraft. Rick has some special tricks, including Barbie hair for rigging, Gator Glue for attaching photo-etch, and a special base to attach a ship model to during the build. Thanks, Rick! Thanks to Dick Montgomery for running the raffle at the meeting and thanks to those who generously donated items. For more on the raffle and the meeting, please see Dick s minutes in the following pages. Since the August meeting, Henry Nunez has agreed to be the Alamo Squadron s new Vice President. Dick and I are really looking forward to working with Henry. (He doesn t know what he s in for!) The program for the September 4th meeting is by Alex De Leon, who took the recent IPMS/USA Nationals by storm, winning Best of Show and more Best of s than anyone ever has won at a Nationals. Alex is from Carrizo Springs, Texas. The monthly contest at the September meeting is a Quarterly (i.e., you get a spiffy award if you place), and the theme is: World War I, Please bring your models for Show and Tell. We plan to have another exciting raffle at the meeting. Oh, and we ll also start collecting dues for I look forward to seeing you all at the meeting September 4th! 6 Charles Stone s English Electric Lightning Rene Faulk's USS Enterprise in the making. This is the new Revell Germany kit, which Rene picked up in Mexico. It's not available in the U.S. market because another kit manufacturer owns the Star Trek license in the U.S. Kent Knebel's Republic RF-84F Thunderflash, another addition to Kent s Republic collection. 8 Some new models to show. In front of photo, an Airfix model of a Hawker Typhoon Mk IB in whopping 1/24 scale, including photoetched parts, clear parts and decals (and at a very good price). 10 Paper models by Jerry Escobedo. Models are of free download on the NASA and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) web sites. Jerry used cardstock, metal wire and wood for the bases. Alamo Squadron September

11 Focke-Wulf Fw190- D13 By Lee Forbes The kit was the 1/72 scale FW- 190D-13. It was one of the last FW-190s produced near the end of World War II. It had a very unique paint scheme that I have wanted to try and duplicate for some time. I already had a reference book on the airplane which currently resides in the Seattle Museum of Flight Warbirds Collection. So when I saw it at the IPMS Nationals in Hampton, VA earlier this month I had to have it. It's made by R.V. Aircraft, kit # and was priced at $27.00 (USD). Alamo Squadron September

12 The speaker at our July meeting, Colonel Frank Frazier, flew an F-86F in Korea and shot down two MiGs. If you want to build a model of his F-86F, here s the low-down, according to Lee Forbes: Overall finish is Natural Metal, yellow outlined in black Quick ID Stripes depicting the 4th FIW, vertical tail Serial Number is U.S. Air Force Buzz Codes are FU-451, his name in 3 inch block black letters, LT FRANK D. FRAZIER, appears on the port side only on the canopy frame. The name of his airplane, LIL' BOBBIE, is in 6 inch block black letters, on the lower portion of the nose on the port side only. Col. Frazier will be giving the 2 nd part of his talk on the November 2014 meeting. Mark your calendars! Col. Frazier Easter egg: His mother once disclosed that he had a great interest in airplanes. 15 Information IPMS/USA Alamo Squadron: The Club was founded in 1977 in San Antonio, Texas, for the enjoyment of building scale models and the camaraderie of the members. Dues are normally $12.00 a year, due when the Treasurer tells you. The Alamo Squadron has been putting on ModelFiesta since Locations have included the Wonderland Mall, a Holiday Inn, the Seven Oaks Motel & Convention Center, the Live Oak Civic Center and the new location for 2013, the San Antonio Event Center.
