1 UPDATE Volume 47, Issue 11 AMA CHARTER CLUB 797 November 2015 The SANTA BARBARA RADIO CONTROL MODELERS INC. is incorporated in the State of California as Chapter 797 of the ACADEMY OF MODEL AERONAUTICS (AMA). The purpose of this club is to promote the hobby of model aviation in a safe and enjoyable manner. Regular meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at the Santa Barbara Airport Visitor s Center, 45 Hartley Place (off of Hollister at David Love Place). Everyone is welcome at our meetings. Please phone or any officer for further information. No host bar /social hour at 6 PM, dinner at 7 PM. The cost will be $25 per person. Here is the plea by the AMA regarding this: The City Council of Los Angeles has passed a damaging ordinance that severely restricts modeling within its borders. This ordinance is now waiting for Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to sign. We have to convince him to reject this

2 ordinance. My biggest fear is that this will set a precedent for other cities to use to restrict modeling. That is why I am asking members both in and outside of Los Angeles to take action. Section for unmanned aircraft systems would among other things; Require "prior express authorization" to operate a model within 5 miles of a tower controlled airport. Forbid all types of night flying. Impose a hard limit of 400 feet above the ground for all model operations, anywhere within the city limits. The ordinance provides for criminal penalties for any violation. Los Angeles is a sprawling city that covers over 500 square miles. We can not allow this to become law. Glenn has very nicely reminded Jim Kolanek and myself to make all of us aware and to that effect he wrote: Also, very important, within about two weeks of the event Harry's will need a hard count as to number attending and you need to select the buffet menu. Someone should be in touch with Harry's now on these issues. Getting the count is the hard part. You can certainly just use googlegroups but then you have to hear from members not online. Since the restaurant cost is based on the number you give the restaurant, a good count is important of course. We should definitely get this done at the November 5 meeting, I obtained last year s menu plus other items we could chose if we want to vary this year. Sven and I had a meeting with Mike Nelson of Elings Park a few weeks ago regarding the no drones sign. After a little negotiating, Mike agreed to look at a proposal to be written by Sven. I suggested Sven get in touch with Tom Wolf, who should have a copy of the old proposal we had with the Park and modify it to reflect drones. I understand Sven is in the process of writing the proposal. I am looking forward to seeing all of you on November 5. Fred The auction was concluded at approximately 8:30 PM. There was no business conducted. Next month will be nomination and election of officers for Member Spotlight: Ed Flisher Ultra Stick 60 (Old Reliable) I was born in Middletown, Ohio, August 28, I was around aviation and many other hobbies growing up. My grandfather was a tool and die maker at Aeronca Aircraft which was located at the local airport. In addition to building models, I spent time at the airport, which had a lot of flight activity for a small town airport. Also Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton was only 25 miles away. There was always a wide variety of military aircraft overhead (B-29 s, B-36 s, B-47 s, F- 86 s, etc). I always looked forward to the annual Air Force airshow at the base. My other grandfather had a repair business for small appliances and engines and I learned the wonderful world of how all these machines were constructed, operated and how to repair them. Club Meeting Minutes October 1, 2015 The meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM. The annual club auction was held with about 22 attendees. Page 2 Soap Box Derby Middletown, Ohio

3 After a few years of building and racing in the local soap box derby, I got into model aircraft control line. During my last year in high school, I built my first R.C. aircraft, operated with a Kraft transmitter. After a year at Ohio State, I decided I would come to California in 1961 to be closer to the aviation industry. I addition to getting my B.S. in Engineering, I took an extra year to get an FAA Airframe & Powerplant license so I could learn more about the construction and repair of aircraft and work part-time as an A&P mechanic the last two years of college. Thanks to both of my grandfathers advice and help and my educational experience, I was able to get a job as a Flight Test Engineer at Northrop Norair immediately out of college. Our experimental flight tests were conducted at Edwards AFB. I was also trained in Flight Safety and Accident Investigation. I then achieved my life goal of becoming an airline pilot. In 1967, pilots started with the airlines as Flight Engineers and progressed to Copilot, then Captain. In my career, I flew the Convair 880, B-727, B-707, Lockheed 1011, MD-80, B-757 and B-767. I retired as a Captain from American Airlines in 2002 with about 23,000 hours and about 14 million miles flown. I am also a lifetime member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). So a few years ago, I put aside the R.C. aircraft for a while and I started building a full-size aircraft. It is a Van s RV9-A, which is a 2- place with a 160 hp engine and a top speed of 197 mph. In past years, I also helped build a Tailwind and a Starduster. Ed & Olivia - Last Flight August 27, 2002 In 1997 I returned to R.C. flying with the SBRCM. I enjoy both the gas and electric aircraft. Along the way, members like Gino, Dale among many others were very helpful with the new construction techniques and especially the new electronics. We sure have come a long way from the first Kraft radios. Flying RV-9A with a paint scheme similar to my aircraft when completed Due to an extensive amount of traveling with my wife, Olivia, and our three children and eight grandchildren, the Van s aircraft is only 90% complete! I do plan to have it flying by next summer. Then I can get back to R.C. building. Ed Flisher Page 3

5 Around and About: Some Photos from the Scale Masters Championships While this event was poorly attended (only 30 entries; Expert: 3, Team: 2, Advanced: 2, Pro-AM classes: 23), many of the aircraft that were represented were quite nice. Here are a few photos of some of the better aircraft. A turbine powered F-16 on short final. Mike Barbee was the Grand Champion for 2015 with this very nice and very large T-34 Mentor. It was powered by a 200cc flat four DA engine. A very nice P-47 powered by a Moki radial engine. Page 5 Watch out for those trees!
