11 October 2018 General Meeting Minutes The October 2018 meeting was called to order by NARCA President Rich Lawrie at 6:38 PM at the IHOP Madison Back Meeting Room. Visitors: Tracey Bartlett (Mike Krebs Friend): Sheila Stanford (wife of Stan); Jim and Ann Scheiern (parents of Tom Scheiern); Carolyn Peck (wife of Don Peck) The minutes of the September 2018 NARCA general meeting were approved as published in the NARCA newsletter. Officer Reports President: NR VP: NR Secretary Archie Phillips reported on mail received and on completion of tasking to update the NARCA renewal form (published in last newsletter) and the NARCA Application (submitted to NARCA Webmaster). Treasurer Bob Stewart reported that 18 members had renewed for 2019 so far, otherwise he has been dealing with Aerotow income and expenses. Committee reports Field Committee chairman Rick Nelson: The NARCA field was mowed for the Aerotow and it was a big team effort. The entrance gate to the NARCA flying site has been left open numerous times. There have been thefts at Epps Airpark but so far nothing has been stolen from NARCA. Apparently the burglar was just not aware of the NARCA sheds. In discussion there was a call to punish the offender(s). The issue will be addressed in the executive meeting and any with an input are requested to attend. Check to make sure all locks to our storage areas are secured and never leave the lock set on the combination. George Rittenhouse has repaired the 5KW generator which required a new carburetor and fuel system cleaning. One mower needs a tire repair and a timer switch needs replacement. Contest Chairman - Tim Batt: The results of the NARCA Aerotow in October are in. There were 15 registered pilots and that was down due to other clubs jumping on the bandwagon and sponsoring Aerotows. One visiting pilot contributed a sailplane that was auctioned netting a $183 donation. The weather was very good and the Sailplane pilots enjoyed booming thermals. There was a strange crash where a sailplane and a tow-plane became entangled on the towline. Between food concession and registration and after expenses NARCA made almost $1000. Rick Nelson thanked those NARCA members that helped make the event a success. Programs: VP Chuck Pierce was on business travel. Dr. Bill Cook from NASA was introduced as the evening s presenter. Training: NR Membership: We have had several visitors interested in learning more about flying model airplanes. Safety: All NARCA is reminded to use the safety backup radio (turn the timer switch immediately before each of your flights). Finance George Rittenhouse: Comment was made for all NARCA to let the NARCA leadership know if they want some event or anything for next year so it can be included in the NARCA budget now being developed. Old Business Kevin Reynolds presented the progress of the nomination committee for the November officer elections. The Nomination committee consists of Kevin Reynolds (chair), Dr. Bill Beasley and Don Peck. The current slate is: Chuck Pierce for President, Eddie Denny for Vice-President, Archie Phillips for Secretary and Bob Stewart for Treasurer. Any NARCA member that would like to be considered for the NARCA Officer Election in November are requested to contact the nomination committee or at the November 8 th meeting. Jeff Youngblood gave a report on transfer of responsibility for management of the NARCA website. The recent yearly renewals cost $270. Tom Scheiern gave a status report on the NARCA Facebook Page. New Business None Meeting was adjourned at 6:57 PM 2

Program After the meeting adjourned Dr. Bill Cook from NASA gave another Astronomical presentation. His presentation last year was on Asteroids and this presentation on Comets, entitled a Cometary Tail. The presentation was informative, humorous and really held your attention especially giving a human touch to the characters we learned in school. (This writer apologizes for the sketchy notes but the presentation held my attention to the point I forgot to take notes). He started with a few definitions and a history on naming of comets and how the theory of comet makeup has changed over time. The three main types (based on their orbits) are Short Period (<300 years), Long Period (>300 years) and Sun Grazers (typically plunge into the she Sun). The former planet PLUTO is really Kuyper-Belt object. He gave several examples of comets breaking up as they encountered planets and stars with a video of the comet that impacted Jupiter. He discussed the several missions to comets and how the research was conducted. He explained the cause for the numerous meteor showers many of which are Earth passing through the remnants shed in a comets path. He entertained many questions from all. He concluded with a reminder that the show to see this year is the Geminids Meteor showers this coming December 6 th. For the presentation Dr. Bill received a standing ovation and many thanks from the NARCA members and guests. Archie Phillips, Secretary Membership Vote Status Charles Hamley first vote will be at the November club meeting. Rebecca Reynolds first vote will be at the November club meeting. Sponsor is Kevin Reynolds. Gregory Wiren second vote will be at the February 2019 meeting. Sponsor is Rick Nelson. NARCA s Facebook Page and Facebook Group NARCA Facebook Page: NARCA Facebook Group: We encourage all NARCA Members to join the Facebook Page and Facebook Group it s easy to do and is a very convenient way to communicate among club members, especially with flying season here. A note from the NARCA safety guy Please read the "Taxi" safety article on page 64 of the November 2018 "Model Aviation" magazine. There is a safety note that the fail-safe feature should be checked with the plane restrained by turning off the transmitter, and if the throttle goes to maximum the pilot must correct it before flying that plane. This relates to two close calls recently that occurred at our flying field. My Aeronca Champ was in the safety stand and when the engine started it went to full power immediately while not responding to the transmitter throttle control. The engine started to drag the safety stand towards the shade shed but fortunately I was able to stop it with the ignition kill switch. Unable to solve the problem I disassembled the airplane and took it home to determine the transmitter programming problem. Next time at the flying field the throttle operated properly while in the starting safety stand but as I taxied out and stopped to make my usual check that all switches should be forward for takeoff the engine went to full throttle and I had no choice but to take the airplane up narrowly missing the trees. I then discovered that an unused switch was overriding the throttle control. After landing I was able to correct the programming problem and all has been well since. We were warned of this sometime ago during one of Don's presentations at a club meeting on modern radios when he stated that the failsafe should be checked and that the engine should go to low speed and the gear go down. Please make that fail-safe check before you fly the next time. 3

Interesting Web Sites Want to know what happens when a drone hits a general aviation aircraft? In this case it is a DJI Phantom and a fourseat Mooney. Check out this video: What s Going On at The Flying Field This column is dedicated to photos of NARCA member s activities at the Flying field. Please snap a photo of whatever you re doing at the field and it to Al Clark at narcapub@gmail.com Include a brief note about it and I will put it into the newsletter. Rick pre-flighting with Kevin Reynold s daughter Rebecca: Kevin says: She got an introductory flight today and some stick time. She might be joining the club, as she enjoyed the flying. :-) Teamwork it takes teamwork As many of you know Tom Scheiern lost his airplane in a tree last month. It took several tries searching and once found several tries to get the airplane. It was stuck in the fork of a deciduous tree about 50 feet high. Using the Phillips retrieval system (no patent - open source) the tail section and one wing were recovered the first day. No luck on the second day. The third day of recovery operations was the money shot when the Lanham, Rittenhouse and Phillips team recovered the wing, motor, ESC and battery. The parts were returned to Tom at the NARCA Exec meeting last Thursday. (photo next page) 4

Photos from Tom Scheiern s BTE Flyin King build. Tom is getting close to a test flight. He has converted his FK to electric power, so now there will be two electric Flyin Kings at the field! 5

Back In the Day This column is dedicated to photos by NARCA members from their earlier modeling days. Many of you have been in the modeling hobby for a long time, so please let other NARCA members see what you were doing/flying in the past. your photos to Al Clark at narcapub@gmail.com and include a brief note, and I ll get it into the next newsletter! No submissions this month. Classified Ads If you have modeling items you want to sell, buy, swap, or donate, this is the place to post them. Please your ad with a photo or two and pertinent details to Al Clark at narcapub@gmail.com and I will get them into the newsletter. No submissions this month Swap Meet Update Executive Committee Note: At the November Club Meeting, NARCA will request a new Swap Meet Coordinator to replace Larry Holcomb who has done an outstanding job over the past years, but is unable to continue. If there is no interested party amongst our club members to take over as Swap Meet Coordinator, the March 2019 Swap Meet will be cancelled. The date of our next Swap Meet is 23 March Venue is the Pineview Baptist Church which has already been reserved. Model Aviation Magazine ad and insurance have been requested from AMA. NARCA members please begin identifying and setting aside donations for auction. This has accounted for 25 to 30 percent of revenue over past two years thanks to the generosity of members and friends they have contacted. Over the next five months we will begin an advertising campaign and nail down all the details. Please send ideas and notice of donations to Larry Holcomb at landj109@yahoo.com. It takes the whole club to make this a success. Larry Holcomb, Swap Meet Manager (Swap Meet flyer on next page) 6
