1 THE GRAPEVINE Volume 64 Issue 3 Livermore-Pleasanton-Dublin Branch November 2016 Inside this issue: Tales of a Computer Pioneer with Mary Ann Mansigh Karlsen November Meeting 1 Board Meeting 1 Thursday, Nov. 17 2:00 PM, Room B Livermore Civic Center Library 1188 S. Livermore Avenue Livermore When Mary Ann Karlsen graduated with a math degree, she began her job search. What caught her eye was under Men Wanted in the Oakland Tribune for mathematicians to work as programmers at the University of California Radiation Laboratory in Livermore. Answering that ad led her to the Laboratory and landed her a job that she started on May 5, 1955, 61 years ago. Karlsen had graduated with a bachelor s degree in education from the University of Minnesota with a double major in math and chemistry and a minor in physics. "I never thought of myself as a woman programmer, I was just a programmer, she said. My teachers in high school and college were women so I never thought I didn t belong. Assigned to work on the UNIVAC, Karlsen spent thousands of hours helping computational physics legend Berni Alder turn his molecular dynamics into computer code to run on Lawrence Livermore supercomputers. A very lively discussion was held. Thanks to Gwen Locke, Sandy Hansen and many others for bringing editorials, news articles. Some pointed cartoons helped us make some informed decisions. Many of us took notes on our sample ballot.the exchange was enjoyed by all. A quick reminder our AAUW Public Policy Priorities are: Gender Pay Gap; Family Leave and Paid Sick Days; Reproductive Rights; and College Affordability. How can you evaluate candidates? Look for their positions on these issues that are relevant AAUW s mission of promoting equity for all women and girls. Roz WHEN WOMEN VOTE, WE CAN CHANGE THE CONVERSATION. VOTE! 8 PAGE 8 TECH TREK WENDY PING lpdtechtrek@aauw-lpd.org We are delighted to report that, thanks to the diligent efforts of Dot Bishop, LPD Tech Trek is once again receiving a Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS) Community Gift Program grant. This year, the LLNS grant will be $3600, which will fund 4 girls to attend Camp Curie! Dot Bishop and Wendy Ping will attend the LLNS Community Gift Program Reception on Oct. 31, to accept the check. But as always, LPD Tech Trek still depends on individual donations to permit us to continue to send 8 girls to camp. Are you starting to think about your end-of-the-tax-year donations? Please keep Tech Trek in mind! Donating is easy: - To donate online, go to and click on "Donate to Tech Trek". Very important: be sure to select the correct fund from the drop down menu, "Tech Trek Caliornia - Stanford Curie" to insure your donation goes to LPD girls. - To donate by check, make checks payable to "AAUW", with "Tech Trek" in the memo line and mail to: Tech Trek LPD, P. O. Box 661, Livermore, CA Any questions or concerns? Contact lpdtechtrek@aauw-lpd.org. COMMUNICATIONS SANDY HANSEN info@aauw-lpd.org Thanks to Myla Grasso who has stepped up to be trained to manage our branch website. She'll begin to assist Sandy Hansen in November. Among the frustrations about communications are the problems that appear either within our system or the systems of members when messages to members go "bouncing". For various reasons, systems (for example, EarthLink, Yahoo, Juno) DON'T always communicate. One cause can be the way members perceive the that is sent to them. If, after reading - or without reading - you tell your system the item is spam, that action (done enough times) tells the system to set the sender as a "spammer" and it may upset the way the entire server system, be it EarthLink, Yahoo, Juno, or whatever, interprets the sender address - i.e., Carol G. s address. Then, anyone in our branch who uses the same company (again, as in this example EarthLink, Yahoo, or Juno for THEIR server), also has bouncing back to Carol as rejected by the server. PLEASE, do NOT mark these communications from her or anyone else in our branch as spam, but feel free to trash or save them, as appropriate. This may be a bit muddy, but if you have provided us with an address, we'd like to be able to send you occasional messages - the newsletter and reminders between newsletters. Thanks for your cooperation. Sandy
