4 4 Judith Kaho LAF As of March, 2012, the AAUW Board voted to disburse $29,000 to support 6 ongoing LAF cases including Dukes v. Wal-Mart. AAUW also filed an Amicus brief for the Wal-Mart case. One piece of good news was about the Mansourian plaintiffs vs. the UC Regents (US Davis former wrestlers). After 7 years, an agreement to settle was reached in February. AAUW disbursed more than $100,000 to support this case. There is a new LAF Title IX Case (women s tennis team head coach) Bull v. Board of Trustees of Ball State University in Indiana. The trial date is April 9, Please read the press release on the AAUW web site about the recent settlement of a bullying case in the Anoka-Hennepin School District, which resulted in plans to correct the misconception that Title IX is only about sports. Thank you for the support given to the LAF issues in INTERNATIONAL CUISINE DINNER Please join us for a delicious Chinese dinner on Wednesday, May 23, at L.V. SeaFood Restaurant. The meal will be served family style with a variety of tasty dishes. Daphne Ching and JoAnn Kuroda will be hosting this meal as we celebrate TheYear of the Dragon. 5 5 Sharon Westafer AAUW California 2012 Election / One Member, One Vote For the first time, everyone has the opportunity to vote in the state election. Voting will occur after the April convention and members may vote online or using a paper ballot. Candidates who submitted nominations by the December 10 deadline are posted on the AAUW CA website, aauw-ca.org., and are printed in the California Perspective. They appear in the order they submitted their application to the Nominating Committee. Additional nominations will be accepted from the floor at the 1 st business meeting at the convention. A ballot will be prepared following the close of convention. VOTING PROCESS Approximately two weeks after the convention, every member will receive an message or a postcard with her/his voting access code. The message will be from AAUW CA Ballot. Online ballot can be reached through a link in the or on the AAUW CA website. Your access code will be imbedded in the link. Instructions for accessing the site and contact information for assistance will also be given in the . Members may request paper ballots to mail in their vote. When you go to the site, you will be asked to validate your code. Once the code is validated, click the open ballot button. Voting instructions are then given. Candidates are listed with instructions on how many candidates are running for an office and how many candidates to select for that office. You may vote for fewer candidates than allowed but not more. If you vote for more, you will receive an error message. An alert will appear when you vote for fewer than you are allowed, however you may proceed. When you have finished voting, you can review your choices and you can go back and modify your votes, or you can cast your ballot To change your vote, click on the checked box to uncheck it, then check the box for your new vote. When you are finished you have the option to modify your votes again before you cast your ballot. When you have completed voting, you may request a confirmation. Voting will take place between April 30 and June 1. If you choose to request a paper ballot, it is your responsibility to make sure your voted ballot is delivered by June 1. Reminder s will be sent regularly until your voting access code has been used. Once the access code has been used it cannot be used again. If you don t have a computer and would like to vote online, or need help voting online, Ellen Mathis, Pat Ferrer and Linda Patten have offered to assist members.
6 6 Flo Pickett, Chair Public Policy Public Policy The Ryan Budget and Women from AAUW 4/5/2012 This is not shared sacrifice. The House of Representatives has already passed Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-WI) brand-new budget, which slashes hundreds of billions of dollars from low-income programs while cutting taxes for our nation's wealthiest. To be clear, this proposal cuts taxes for everyone -- but the average cut for those with yearly incomes over $1 million (12.5 percent) is six times greater than the cut for middle-income people (1.9 percent). The Ryan budget would also maintain current tax cuts -- but only for high-income families; this plan would allow the tax cuts for working-poor and middle-class households to expire. This budget imposes trillions of dollars in spending cuts, 62 percent of which would come from low-income programs that women and families rely on, like Medicare, Medicaid, and federal student aid programs. The Ryan budget flies in the face of reason. The budget should never be used as a weapon to wage war on programs critical to the economic security of women and families while handing out enormous tax cuts to the wealthiest earners. AAUW unequivocally opposes Ryan's plan, which relies on flawed math and assumptions, and will do real and lasting harm to families, workers, and retirees. Contact your senators today: To send a message asking your senators to oppose the Ryan budget, visit AAUW Two-Minute Activist or click on the "Take Action" in is an important election! Many things that are essential to our mission are at stake. AAUW members need to actively educate and mobilize women voters to make our voices heard. Click on the Public Policy tab in to learn about the issues, find out how you can mobilize voters in your community and sign up for Action Alerts so you can contact your representatives at critical times.
