I d like to wish each of you a healthy and peaceful Gwen and her committee have an exciting six months coming up so be sure so watch the Grapevine and put us on your calendar. We begin in January with an excellent speaker. This is a program to which you might want to consider inviting your daughters and granddaughters. It s open to the public so invite your neighbors as well. We had a delightful holiday party in December at Stoneridge Creek. My thanks to Barbara Hempill and Pat Kohnen who coordinated the event for us. (Dare I say - possibly a permanent committee?) After a delicious buffet with three entrée selections, we got down to the gift exchange. Great fun was had by all as we watched the participants trying to snare the gift they preferred. I was sorry to hear of the passing of our long time member, Margaret Tracy, at the beginning of December. A few months ago, I had the pleasure of talking with her for a few hours and interviewing her for our branch history. When this history is ready, we will be posting it to our website. Wendy Ping & Charlene Grandfield , secretary@aauw-lpd.org Jackie Shurtleff aauwfunds@aauw-lpd.org Roz Wright advocacy@aauw-lpd.org COCKTAILS & CONVERSATIONS We meet for conversation, visiting, good food, general camaraderie and some brainstorming on the first Tuesday of each month at 828 Main. WHEN: Tuesday, Jan. 3, 6 pm. WHERE: 828 Main Street, Pleasanton

3 PAGE 3 MEMBERSHIP CORNER Marilyn Duman (membership@aauw-lpd.org) We had a great turnout for our holiday party at Stoneridge Creek. The food was very good and the white elephant gift exchange was a lot of fun. I was happy to get to know some of you a little bit better. Please remember to contact me if you have any membership questions. For more great information about AAUW and our mission, be sure to visit the California ( and National websites ( ). Topics discussed include Advocacy, Campus, Career and Workplace, Community, Education, Leadership, and Economic Justice. If you are thinking about getting more involved on the state level you can sign up for legislative action alerts and find our more information about the Women's March on January 21st, among many other things. Happy reading and I look forward to seeing you in 2017 Marilyn COFFEE AND Thursday, January 5, 2017 We meet at Sweet and Savory (corner of Stoneridge & Gibraltar Drives) in Pleasanton on the first Thursday of the month. All members are welcome. We like having friends & prospective members, too. WHAT: WHEN: WHERE: A social time for all AAUW LPD members & guests. 4 Page 4 SANDY HANSEN info@aauw-lpd.org January 21, 2017 WOMEN S MARCH The Women s March on Washington is a national movement for everyone who stands for human rights, civil liberties, diversity and compassion for our shared humanity. Here is part of Sandy Hansen s article for the CA Online Branch: AAUW will have an official delegation to the Women s March in Washington, D.C. on January 21, as activists will rally across the country to send a vital message: women s rights are human rights. AAUW-CA has announced that they are encouraging California members to participate in any of the similar marches that will be happening in the state Men are welcome to join in. See the page on the AAUW-CA website ( about the event, which includes purchase info for a T-shirt bearing the current AAUW logo. The AAUW CA website also links to info on charter buses to the event, organized by the Women s March on Washington and California official group. There is a bus that will leave Livermore for the Oakland event for $45 round trip. (no parking problems, once there). The Oakland event will begin at 10 AM, near the Lake Merritt BART station and end with a rally near the 12th Street BART station, ending about 3 PM. See for details. The San Francisco event will begin with a rally at Civic Center from 4-6 PM, and continue with a reverent, candlelight march down Market Street to Justin Herman Plaza. See for details. Both events are easily reached via BART. The San Jose event will convene at City 10 am. More info available on their website. Register for these on the Eventbrite page. No charges.

5 Page 5 PUBLIC POLICY ROZ WRIGHT advocacy@aauw-lpd.org One of the nominations that AAUW will be watching closely will be the Secretary of Labor position. The U.S. Department of Labor sets the agenda for a range of issues that directly affect women, particularly how women earn money to support their families. This includes enforcing the federal minimum wage, protecting retirement plans, enforcing laws that prohibit discrimination, and advancing family and medical leave policies. The Women s Bureau, a 90-year-old institution within the Department of Labor, is an essential partner to AAUW in working to level the playing field for all women through research and analysis. The Department of Labor is also a stalwart partner in the fight for equal pay. Its data are crucial to understanding the gender pay gap; advocating for executive and legislative solutions to the problem; and promoting best practices at the state and local levels. Roz Stand with AAUW by taking action today. Together, our voices can help ensure that senators in the 115th Congress are primed with our expectations as they take office. Lisa Maatz AAUW Vice President of Government Relations Bocce, again this year on February 9, 2017 at Campo di Bocce, 175 E. Vineyard, Livermore. That s a Thursday, Come at 10 am to play or just root for all the brave players. Or, come just for lunch at 11:30 am to hear all the tales of near misses and that was so close! This may also be a time to donate to Tech Trek by putting your meal receipts in a bowl. Usually 15% goes toward our scholarship fund supporting girls in STEM. More about all this next month. Oh, come now. That pallino and those red and green balls aren t that heavy! Just come and enjoy. We do have fun.
