PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It s AAUW Election Time It s your AAUW make your voice count. Review AAUW s by-laws, learn about candidates for election to the board of directors, and more---either on-line or in your copy of the spring issue of AAUW Outlook, arriving at the end of the month. Beware that voting begins April 17 th. If you need a paper ballot, you must request one between April 3 and May 4. Call or request one at connect@aauw.org. May 29 postmark is the deadline for mailing a paper ballot. On-line voting ends at 9 pm EDT on June 15 th. Election results will be announced on June 16 on-line and at the convention. Please consider supporting Susan Barley for a National Board of Director Position. Missouri AAUW member, Susan Barley, currently a director on the national board, is running for reelection. She has a website available for viewing from now through the end of the campaign: Thirteen candidates are running for ten director positions. Sue has always done an excellent job of supporting AAUW and would like to continue at the national level. Exciting results from our BRCC partner! We have completed the events planned on Blue River CC Campus. Thank you to everyone who participated in the February 15 Cookies and Convos, March 28 regular meeting and program on Human Trafficking, and the April 4 Table Event sharing information on Equal Pay and Student Affiliate membership. Although the number of attendees wasn t as many as I d hoped for, the contacts we ve made with both staff and students has been remarkable! We will be participating in a campus event on April 26 focusing on Sexual Assault. The big positive is we ve made new friends and shared information beneficial to all of us. I m looking forward to meeting with BRCC students to make plans for more combined events in the future. I appreciate your support and willingness to help with building this partnership. 3 EQUAL PAY DAY Equal Pay Day was originated by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) in 1996 as a public awareness event to illustrate the gap between men's and women's wages. Because women earn less, on average, than men, they must work longer for the same amount of pay. The wage gap is even greater for most women of color. Tuesday, April 4, 2017 is the date that symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. Branch members Jolene Cerveny, Sue Raymond, and Sue Shineman along with other KC AAUW members and members of the League of Women Voters, traveled to Jefferson City to participate in Lobby Day at the State Capital. This event, scheduled in conjunction with Equal Pay Day, is an opportunity for women to discuss with their state legislators issues that are important to women, their children and families. The group of over 100 women from across the state representing a number of organizations was given updates on a number of those issues including Victims Employment Safety & Security Act, human trafficking, pay equity, and reproductive justice. Briefings on bills were provided by sponsoring senators and representative, including Equal Pay bill 205 by Senator Scott Sifton and a bill to increase the marriage age by Representative Jean Evans. State Auditor Nicole Galloway gave the final informative presentation of the day. Highlights of our day included visits with Representatives Bill Kidd from District 20 and Ira Anders from District 21, as well as the opportunity to observe the House debating budget bill amendments. During that debate, an amendment to cut funding to University of Missouri was defeated. Networking with women from other organizations was another benefit of this very worthwhile day. Sign found in the State Capitol PAY EQUITY DAY AT BRCC The branch set up a table event highlighting Pay Equity Day at Blue River Community College on April 4 th. Young women and men were given information on the importance gender equity in lifetime earning power as they were offered a cookie in exchange for their attention to this matter. Nine young women signed up for student affiliation to AAUW. Lois Domsch, Barbara Leabo, Mary Anderson, and Kathy Keeton lead this event on the BRCC campus in Independence. 4 Hostesses: Kathy Keeton, Lois Domsch, Barbara Leabo and Kathy Vest The meeting was called to order at 3:02 pm. Following a welcome from President Sue Shineman, she convened a short business meeting. The first item of business resulted in the election of officers for ; Sue Shineman, President, Karol Palmer, Program VP; Sue Raymond, Recording Secretary. Jane Campbell introduced her guest Debra Powell. President s Comments: 1) April 4 Equity Day Rally bus trip to Jeff City. There will be time for learning experience on the bus, as well as time for lobbying at the Capitol. Sue Shineman, Patt Braley, Jolene Cerveny and Sue Raymond will be attending. 2) April 4 Equity Day Rally Table Event at BRCC campus. 10:00 am 1:00 pm (Hosted by Kathy Keeton, Lois Domsch, Barbara Leabo and Mary Anderson) 3) April 26 - We have been invited to participate in Sexual Assault and Awareness event at BRCC 11:00am 1:00pm. This is National Denim Day, so designated in 1999 in protest of an Italian High Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans. Volunteers are needed to host a table at this event. Reports: Recording Secretary- Sue Raymond. Minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter. Financial Officer - Lois Domsch The financial report is printed in the newsletter. She is accepting payment of $13 for the May brunch. Son of Karol Palmer, Kyle Palmer and his wife Jenna Zakrajsek will bring the program on Journeys to India. Corresponding Secretary Barbara Leabo. A get-well card was sent to Judy Tucker who was having back surgery today; postponed from two weeks ago. Sue Shineman - Led a discussion regarding the creation of a Leadership Scholarship for exceptional leadership to be awarded to Rachael Gonzalez, William Chrisman High School Senior. Patt Brayley made the motion; Kathy Keeton seconded and the motion passed. It was determined that agreement on this proposal requires no changes to Branch Bylaws; It is sufficient to record the action in the minutes. Should a similar situation occur in the future; a separate motion and approval would be required. Patt Braley Any amount donated to the above-mentioned scholarship would count toward the Branch s AAUW Diamond Club for One member has already donated $250 toward this scholarship. If they wish, members may give additional donations to the Financial Officer. Newsletter deadline is April 6. The business portion of the meeting concluded at 3:20 pm. Following a refreshment break and social interaction with our BRCC guests, Karol Palmer introduced our speaker from Veronica s Voice on Human Trafficking.
