President s Corner By Walt Gallaugher At next month s general meeting, DCRC will hold the annual elections for the board of directors. Each year the term of three board members are vacated. This year Scott Davies, Andy Finizio, and Kevin Jackson s three year terms expire. There were four individuals nominated for the board of directors at the September general meeting. The nominees are Bill Garner, Scott Davies, Andy Finizio, and Kevin Jackson. It is very important that every club member attend the October general meeting to cast their ballot for three of these individuals. The club bylaws require that 18% of the membership participate in the election. We normally do not have that many members attend the general meetings. Please plan to attend next month s meeting at the County Council Building Meeting room at 100 Maryland Ave. Rockville, MD; October 21 st starting at 8pm. If you cannot attend the meeting then you can cast an absentee ballot. Absentee ballots can be requested from the recording secretary (Mike Peizer) in writing. These ballots must be signed and enclosed in an envelope and mailed or given to the recording secretary prior to the close of balloting. Mike can be reached at Please bring your 2005 DCRC membership card with you to the meeting. Hope to see you at next month s meeting. 3 October 2005 District of Columbia Radio Control Club Newsletter Page 3 Board Meeting Minutes By Mike Peizer DCRC Board Meeting September 21st 2005 The meeting was held at the field and was called to order by president Walt Gallaugher at 7:40 PM. Jim McDaniel was the meeting host. Kim McDaniel supplied a tasty dinner of chicken wings and subs. In attendance were Scott Davies, Andy Finizio, Allan Hoffman, Jim McDaniel, and Kevin Jackson. Minutes: The board discussed the draft DCRC 2006 budget. Scott Davies provided the board with a 2005 budget reflecting actual expenses to date so the board could evaluate where adjustments may be needed for the 2006 draft budget. The board decided on a few minor changes. Jim McDaniel volunteered to type up the draft 2006 budget with changes. The draft budget will be presented to the new board of directors in October for approval. Walt Gallaugher said he will write a newsletter article reminding the club members about the rules for holding the October elections. The board reviewed a request from Rachel Harris who is the organizational leader for the Flying Tigers 4H Aerospace Club. Ms. Harris asked if DCRC would be interested in sponsoring a special award for next year s fair entries in aerospace. The board agreed to support the 4H club by sponsoring one or more awards in the model airplane category. Walt Gallaugher took an action item to contact Ms. Harris to work out the details. Kevin Jackson said he has an experienced webmaster that will back him up on administrating the DCRC web site when he is unavailable. Walt asked the members for committee reports. There were no old or new business items. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 PM. DCRC General Meeting 9/16 /05 The meeting was called to order by president Walt Gallaugher at 8:06 PM. New Members: Rob Flores just joined and is building a sailplane. Charles Hewitt is rejoining the club and used to instruct, he is attending the meeting with his son, Nathan. In his opening remarks, Walt complimented Andy Kane on the newsletter. Walt praised Doug Harper for his last two articles that appeared in the newsletter. He mentioned Don Gray s column, The Good Stuff, which appears regularly, as well. According to Walt, it is good to see so many DCRC members so deeply involved in the hobby. The show team put on a really good show at the Flying Circus in Bealeton, VA last weekend. There was a big crowd there and they enjoyed the efforts of the show team. Lastly, Walt mentioned that he received an from Rachel Harris asking if DCRC would sponsor an award for the 4H Aeronautical Club. Walt replied that he would bring it up at the next Board meeting. Webmaster: Kevin Jackson has revisited the 53 and 50 MHz interference issue due to the ham radio repeaters on the six meter band. He stressed the vulnerability of those who fly on these frequencies. The local ham radio operators were completely unaware of the RC interference issue. There is a group that coordinates all the repeaters. Kevin contacted them and discovered that they were under the mistaken impression that RC flyers were moving out of the 53 MHz band. Next, Kevin talked with the people at AMA about that, and they said flyers are not moving off those frequencies. Kevin s goal is to make sure that both the ham radio operators and the AMA know about this issue. Now that the ham radio people are aware of the problem, they are taking immediate steps to fix it. Kevin will continue to pursue this issue until it is resolved. The bottom line is, be very careful if you fly on the 53MHz band. Apparently, we are relatively safe on the 50 MHz band. Community & Public Relations & County Liaison: Jim McDaniel spoke about Don Cochran and how he was a great help to DCRC and our moving to the new site. Les Straw took over from Don, and he just retired last August. Bill Mooney will be taking Les place. Bealeton was great. The weather was great. If you haven t been, come down next year. Jim thanked everyone who helped out for all the hard work. Membership & Newsletter: Andy Kane reported we have 247 members. Renewal notices will go out in the mail next month. Sound & Safety: Nir Schweizer reported that last Wednesday, they installed a small rainproof cabinet for the first aid kit. There is a brand new first aid kit in the cabinet now. Nir believes that every member should bring a first aid kit of their own when they fly. The updated club rules have been posted on the new bulletin board as well. Events: Andy Finizio added one note to Nir s report about the first aid kit. The frequency board cover is now hinged on only one side, and is no longer locked. This modification was necessary to make the rainproof cabinet fit in the space available. OctoberFest is next Saturday, and Andy Kane will be cooking. We are going to have a fun fly, and it s going to be a very easy fun fly. Bring a plane and have fun. The food is free, so bring your family. The weather should be OK. We will start about 11am. Flight Instruction: Michael Peizer reported that all is proceeding well with flight instruction. New Business: Ron Bozzonetti spoke about a member who has a very scientific mind. Apparently, this member wanted to show how quickly and thoroughly one can destroy a model. For this groundbreaking work, Bill Garner became the most recent recipient of the SAD award. Next came nominations for the Board of Directors. The three Board members whose terms are expiring are Andy Finizio, Scott Davies and Kevin Jackson. Walt opened the nomination process by asking Kevin Jackson, the head of the nomination committee, for any nominations. Kevin replied that the committee nominates Bill Garner. Ron Bozzonetti seconded the nomination. Kevin Jackson nominated Scott Davies. Ron Bozzonetti seconded the nomination. Jim McDaniel nominated Kevin Jackson. Scott Davies seconded the nomination. Fred Nielsen nominated Andy Finizio. Charlie Calvert seconded the nomination. When no more nominations were forth coming, Charlie Calvert moved the nominations be closed. David Fepelstein seconded the motion. Raffle: Kevin Jackson won a Magnum 120-XL, 4-stroke engine donated by RC Showcase. 2 kits from an anonymous donor were also raffled off. Jim McBride won a Balsa USA Stick 40. Nir Schweizer won a Lanier, Dominator 500. Program: Pictures from Bealeton and the Piper Cub fly-in, in Pennsylvania were shown. Jim McDaniel narrated the showing of the pictures, and did an excellent job of describing the Bealeton, and Piper Cub Fly-in experience. The meeting was adjourned at 9:52 PM.

4 October 2005 District of Columbia Radio Control Club Newsletter Page 4 DCRC Board Election Nominees Scott Davies Andrew Finizio Kevin Jackson Bill Garner Hello, my name is Scott Davies. I was nominated for a fourth three (3) year term to run as one of the nominees for the DCRC board at the September meeting. I would like you to know that I do not take this lightly and I wanted to thank the DC / RC membership for this election. Next, I thought it would be interesting to go back to look at the original letter I submitted to the DC/ RC membership for my first nomination back in October of What I found was that although much had changed, many things remain the same. Please allow me to explain. A few things that have changed are that my children were young adolescents then, they are in their teenage years (oh boy, deep breath). And, as has been mentioned by some, there are a few more grey hairs and possibly even an extra hole or two in the belt. Additionally, I have been fortunate enough to enjoy meeting many new friends in the hobby. This, I would not want to change in any way! But, for the most part little has changed over the past 9 years. One thing that clearly remains the same for me is my enjoyment of what we all call our hobby. Although, like many of you with jobs, teenagers and other commitments, I can t seem to find the amount of time I would like to enjoy the hobby, however, I still seem to find some time and do still enjoy it very much, in fact! During my tenure as both part of the DC/RC Board and the DC/ RC Treasurer, I have had the opportunity to work with many different board members. Much progress has been made, however there are still items the DC/RC membership and the DC/RC board need to address. No matter which individuals made up the board, I have had the privilege to be a part of that team. For that I am grateful. In all cases the DC/RC board has done what we felt best for the entire membership. So in closing, I would like to say, whatever your vote, please vote and enjoy what is left of this flying season. Hope to see (or by the time this is written to have seen you) at the Octoberfest and let me be the first to wish you happy building this winter... No Statement submitted by Andrew Finizio or Kevin Jackson My name is Bill Garner. I have been nominated for election to the Board of Directors. I am confident I can contribute to the Club s well being as a Board member. After retirement, I joined DCRC a little over two years ago with no previous experience in RC aircraft modeling. Thanks to the expert instruction and infinite patience of Ron Bozzonnetti I am now an intermediate level flyer. I fly at every opportunity with the Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings group of (mostly) retirees. I currently own four ARFs and one kit plane I built. One of my goals is to build an airplane from scratch to my own design over the coming winter. Ron has been an inspiration and an advisor toward this goal. While I enjoy the challenges of flying and the comradeship of the flying field, I also wish to contribute in some other way to the club s activities. When Kevin Jackson asked if I would stand for nomination to the Board of Directors, I accepted as board members contribute directly to the Club s successful operation. My applicable work experience includes contributions as an individual, as a group manager and as a program manager (planning, scheduling, and budgeting). During my working career I have served on committees both internal to the companies I worked for and as an outside committee representative. Therefore I have experience in working with groups where collective cooperation and compromise are the keys to successful results as is the case for the DCRC Board. If elected I pledge to work on behalf of the member s best interests and toward keeping the club functioning in a way that promotes those interests. May all of your flying be fun but stay out of the trees!

6 October 2005 District of Columbia Radio Control Club Newsletter Page 6 DCRC AIRSHOW TEAM #103 BEALETON FLYING CIRCUS By Doug Harper The DCRC Airshow Team had the privilege of entertaining the crowd again this year at the Bealeton Flying Circus about 40 miles southwest of Washington, DC. It was a particularly special day since we did our show on Sept 11, 2005, the fourth anniversary of the terrible events in New York and Washington. A very solemn day for sure. DCRC has been doing a scale contest/flyin at the Bealeton Flying Circus for about 29 years. We really enjoy the ambience of this site due to the warm reception we receive from the Flying Circus personnel and the full-scale aircraft that are at the Circus. Everything from Cubs to Stearmans are flying can accomplish with its forward canards. The crowd went wild with excitement. Louie is a pro at the model game, even at the age of 8. As Bob was landing, a covey of Cubs took off. Flown by team manager Jim McDaniel, ass t manager Allan Hoffman, Walt Gallagher and Doug Harper, the sight of four 1/3 scale yellow Cubs against the blue sky was something to behold. Cubs are always crowd pleasers. Next, Bob Klenke took to the skies with a stately 1/3 scale Sopwith Pup. This craft gave the crowd a chance to see an aircraft fly at a slightly different speed. The Pup is beautifully constructed and flies with elegance. Next we launched four electric models to show the crowd how this increasingly prevalent aspect of modeling works. Flown by harm done. The crowd went wild! Next we launched one of the most beautiful acts on a show team today. Earlier, we mentioned the many Stearman aircraft present on the Bealeton Flying Circus site. It turns out our team has exact ¼ scale replicas of four of these aircraft two in Army blue and yellow, one in Navy yellow, and the fourth in black and silver (just like the full-scale wing walker plane sitting at the hangar). Flown by Jim McDaniel, Allan Hoffman, Andy Kane, and Scott Davies, these four craft took to the skies for a fantastic demonstration of formation flying. The crowd loved the sight of these magnificent models against the blue sky. As our show started to wind down, we launched two aerobatic craft a 40% Yak flown by airline pilot Nir Schweizer and a 35% Yak flown by Joseph McDaniel, age L to R; Walt Gallaugher, Chris Edwards, Doug Harper, Nir Schweizer, Scott Davies, Allan Hoffman, Jim McDaniel, Dave McQueeny, Russell McQueeny, Joseph McDaniel and Andy Kane throughout the day. We end our meet there by doing a model airshow just before the full-scale airshow starts on Sunday afternoon. This year the weather was cool and the skies were just beautiful. A sizable crowd assembled for our show, somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 people. We started our show as usual with our Big Lift banner plane welcoming the crowd to our show. This was immediately followed by Andy Kane and his 40% YAK with airshow smoke. As usual, Andy dazzled the crowd with his flying. He ended his spectacular routine with a deadstick landing at his feet. Very impressive. Next we launched a Kangaroo jet flown by guest pilots Bob Klenke and his son Louie. Bob and Louie have been guest flyers at this show for several years in a row. Bob and Louie gave the crowd a complete demo of what a model jet can do. They even demonstrated the 3-D capabilities the Kangaroo Dave McQueeney, Russell McQueeny (age 10), flying circus announcer Chris Edwards, and Joseph McDaniel (age 13), the electrics did a great job swooping around the sky. Unfortunately, there was an interloper right in the middle of the electric demo. Before we could stop him, Allan Hoffman had his U control model sitting in the middle of the flying area with the motor running. This was totally unauthorized and before our security guard could get to it, the model took off and started to circle Allan on a string. It made about 3 revolutions when, to everyone s horror, the string let go and the model started to dart uncontrollably around the sky. The crowd came alive as Jim McDaniel, our announcer, warned everyone to watch out for a model out of control. Of course, it was all a joke as the model was under the control of Doug Harper the whole time. Just to finish this spoof, Scott Davies came to Allan s rescue with a giant U Magnet that pulled the errant model to earth with no 13. These gentlemen proceeded to give the crowd an entertaining show as the two craft pushed every limit. Nir then landed and handed the field to Joe for a solo demo. Joseph is fast becoming the top flyer on our team and is already starting to compete effectively in IMAC contests in the area, all at the ripe age of 13. He loves models and shows it when he flies. Well, Joe did every trick in the book, all with airshow smoke. I might be wrong but I think he even touched the tail to the ground during his patented hover. The crowd went wild and our show was almost over. We closed as usual with our banner plane and another show was in the can. We love going to Bealeton and want to thank them for their continued support of our hobby and for allowing us to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of the Flying Circus. We hope to be there again next year.~
