EVA EXHAUST SYSTEMS The Newsletter of the East Valley Aviators October 2006 December President Jack DeFilippis ( ; Vice President Mickey Ohland (480) ; Secretary Don Manchester (480) l; Treasurer Verlin Boeder (602) ; Safety Officers/Board Members - Bill Cummings (480) , Bruce Van Dyke (480) ; Newsletter Editor Leon Spielbusch ( ); Training Coordinator John Fail (480) December Membership Meeting will be held at Valle de Oro Wednesday December 6 th, :00 p.m. PRESIDENT S PODIUM by Jack DeFilippis, EVA President We wish to thank Harold Ansell, for moving the wires on the frequency board for better placement and retrieval of the frequency pins. Stepping up to the plate. As we move into the new season with many of our winter visitors returning, I want to extend to all of you and your families best wishes. We hope you have a happy, safe, healthy, and bountiful Holiday Season. We need to stop and take notice of the many members of this club, who have contributed both time and money to make our field one of the best in the country. Thanks to our fellow members, who have contributed unselfishly their time to make our site a place to be proud of. Everyone is aware that we have one of the best and lowest cost clubs in the country. We perform our own club maintenance. This is why our dues are so low. If we had to contract it out, our dues would be much higher. Still, only 10% of our membership helps. So please assist when you can. At present we need a staple gun to re-secure the carpet on the flight line start up stations. If anyone has one, please bring it to the field and staple the carpet. Our thanks go out to the many volunteers who have stepped up to the plate when things needed to be done. Charles Rackley, for grading the road to the field. The monsoon season played havoc with our facilities. The cost to have this work done by an outside contractor would have been prohibitive. Your the man Charlie. Howard Giemsoe, for providing his trailer to remove junk items from the field to the dump. Bernie Boland for providing us with a program for our last meeting. It is very encouraging to see the enthusiasm and hard work our members provide to help make this club the best in the East Valley... And don t forget George from D & D Hobby, for providing the food at our last meeting and many of our functions. Be sure to patronize his hobby shop. We cannot send out a message strong enough for his heartfelt contributions, which have benefited us all.

- 2 - Heads Up!!!!!!!!!! Remember whether you are a novice or experienced pilot. If you experience a problem mechanical, radio, or a brain failure please yell out Heads Up to warn other members that you are in trouble. Even if you recover the plane and land fine it is better to be safe then sorry. East Valley Aviators General Membership Meeting October 7, 2006 Board members present: Jack DeFilippis - President, Mickey Ohland - Vice President, Don Manchester - Secretary, Verlin Boeder - Treasurer, Bill Cummings - Safety Officer. There were approximately 60 members present. Jack welcomed everyone and asked new members and guests to introduce themselves. Jack introduced Leon Spielbusch who will be taking over as Editor of the newsletter. He thanked Doug Sharpe for his outstanding efforts over the past four years bringing our Club newsletter to the high standard that we see today. It is easy to copy, but hard to invent. Be sure to give Leon information for the newsletter. Also please let Verlin know when you have a change of address. We particularly want to have your current address for the newsletter and as a rapid way to keep you informed of events. Safety is very important and we will be emphasizing it at the field, at meetings and in the newsletter. Stay behind the fence if not flying or assisting a pilot. No run up of engines in the pit area and this means electrics also. Using the transmitter impound is an absolute must. No transmitters laying around on tables when not in use. Transmitters kept in cases should be in your car and not on a table. We have a lot of winter visitors coming back and the field will be crowded at times. Do not hog the tables and move aircraft to the pit area so others can use a table. Jack reviewed our Club guest policy. We are a private Club for members and their occasional guests. Guests must use a members badge to claim a frequency. The guest privilege should be limited and not be abused. Questions should be referred to a Club officer. Election of three officers, Vice-President, Secretary and Safety Officer will be held at the December general meeting. Anyone interested should contact Mickey who is heading up the Nominating Committee. These positions are extremely important and he urged everyone to consider running for one of the offices. Jack called attention to the Club web site that Mickey has established. It contains the latest information about Club activities and alerts about happenings at the field. If there is a rain closure, it will be on the web site. Jack thanked George Piersol and D and D Hobbies for providing lunch and Gene Coleman for cooking it. Bernie Boland made a presentation about the importance of checking your aircraft and correctly trimming it to improve flight characteristics. He also discussed how to use your computer radio to mix various control functions to improve flying performance. He urged everyone to support IMAC events. The meeting adjourned at 10:30 and everyone enjoyed lunch. Don Manchester, Secretary October 7, 2006

- 3 - Frog Pond Welcome to the EVA Frog Pond. We cover an array of interests and flying levels for our members. The increase in interest in the Frog Pond is constantly on the rise. The photo below is just a segment of many members who enjoy the slow flying electric side of the hobby kids to fly. Perusing the Internet he found plans for a pusher type model called the Frog. At that time he was also interested in winding small CD Rom electric motors. The plans were purchased and he teamed up with Jim Smith. Jim built the first frog. The maiden flight was reduced to a few minutes as the battery was not charged and the first dead stick prevailed. The plane landed with no power with a nice glide to the field. As with the Wright Brothers this successful flight has caught the eye of numerous members and created an addiction. There have been numerous modifications to the original design, including Glider type Frogs, Hot Fast Frogs, and Long Time Flying Frogs. Bob Kessner has to date, the longest flight time of one hour fifteen minutes. Jim Smith has matched this time with a sister ship of one hour fourteen minutes. Jim Smith constantly engineers new ideas and concepts. Some of his recent accomplishments are floats for the Frogs weighing in at one ounce. Night flying wings configured with 4/5 led lights. Left to right Bob Richardson, Robert Hessner, Jim Smith, Tom Long, Verlin Boeder, Gene Coleman, Robert Tang. Profile of a member Frog Pond History Several years ago, electric flight started to come onto the scene. At that time the models were slow and provided poor performance and flight longevity. The models caused a problem when flown at our field. Bob Tang asked the current president for space to fly electric planes so as not to conflict with the glow planes. Permission was granted and a section near the main field was cut out to accommodate electric flight. Bob Tang then wanted a slow flying model that he could teach his grand Aerial Photography, Jim has taken marvelous aerial photos of the field with a digital camera mounted on the Frog. Since the conception of the Frogs Bob Tang has wound upwards of 100 motors for members and several are flown in various states including Alaska and are in the country of Canada. These motors have proven to be both reliable and efficient. The frog flyers have more stick time then the majority of our members. Anyone interested in becoming a part of this group visit the Frog Pond. Bring new ideas to the already proven ones. - Jack Definition of a crash: When you run out of ideas and altitude simultaneously.

- 4 - Nominating Committee EVA's board members are elected in December of each year and hold their position for two years. This year the offices of Vice President, Secretary and Safety Officer will be elected at the December meeting. This year s Election Nominating Committee Mickey Ohland, Doug Sharpe and Perry Bartnett submit the following Nominations: Vice- President...Mickey Ohland (incumbent) Secretary.....Harold Ansell and Mike Wyman Safety Officer... Bill Cummings (incumbent) The club will vote December 6th. ALL nominations MUST be current EVA members and approved by the person being nominated. To submit your nomination, contact or send an to one of the Nominating Committee members. Mickey Member Complaints Hardly a day goes by that I do not hear a complaint about one thing or another that upset members. The majority of time the complaints are not related to safety issues of which we can take action but of a courtesy type consideration. My intent is to post in future newsletters, during the season these members concerns so as to avoid possible arguments. We want everyone to enjoy the season and hobby with the least fun down time. 1. One major complaint is the flying of 3d, aerobatic, or close in flying at the field when others are flying. Our club rule specifics that all flying is to be accomplished 25 feet from the flight station or center line of the runway. This seems to annoy several members as they think the line should be north of the runway starting at the grass line. Flyers should consider this concern of others as it can cause distractions. 2. Parking: Many members come out to visit, which we do condone. They park in the prime spots, which should be used for pilots unloading planes and equipment to fly. If you are just visiting please park in the parking area for visitors. 3. Remember that after you set up your plane on the table; remove all equipment from it to allow for the next member. The purpose of the tables, is for assembly, dismantle, or repair of airplanes. Planes should be placed in the staging area after assembly. 4. All transmitters must be impounded. If you have an expensive radio you do not want to impound, then it has to be cased and placed in your vehicle. This rule will be enforced 5. The trashcans are provided for garbage and smaller items, not crashed planes. Remember we do not have a contracted service to clean up after us. Volunteers provide disposal service. It is the responsibility of each club member to clean up after his or her self. 6. No start up of any aircraft in the spectator area. This includes Gas, Glow, and Electric. No run up of electric motors, on planes, cars, etc. No helicopter starts up. The tables in the spectator area are for assembly only. Engine runs of any kind are prohibited. General Membership Meeting Schedule The East Valley Aviators general membership meets six times each year on the first Wednesday of the month. Meetings are held in the months of January, February, March, May, October, and December. An issue of the Exhaust System newsletter will be published the week before each of the meetings. We will publish the location of the meetings in our newsletter. We are always looking for any input from our members.

- 5 - If you have any articles, pictures or classified ads (free to club members) you would like to see published please contact Leon Spielbusch. to lspielbusch@hotmail.com or call (480) drinks, Verlin Boeder, the Donuts, and Mike Wyman for the muffins. Please support our local Hobby Shops Adventure Hobbies 1949 W. Ray Rd. #31 Telephone: (480) D&D Hobbies 6247 E. Main St. #5 Mesa, Arizona (480) Hobby Town of Gilbert 1915 E. Baseline Rd. Gilbert, AZ Viper Hobbies 4410 E. University, Suite 110 Mesa, Arizona Telephone (602) November Fun Fly/Swap Meet We had a beautiful day and a good turnout out for our Fun Fly/Swap meet, approx 100 people showed up. D&D Hobbies and the club provided Drinks, Donuts, Hot Dogs, Chip, Etc. and all had a good time. Only three members signed up for the Fun Fly. Mike had to cancel it due to lack of participation. There were nice prizes including $25.00 gift certificates for the would-be winners. I think we found out the problem. These events are to introduce newer, as well as seasoned flyer to competition. Only the seasoned flyers entered which may have intimidated the rest. All the events do not necessarily test your flying skills but on a level for all to try. Our next fun fly will be scheduled around March of 2007, and we will arrange the events that even a beginner pilot can participate in and win a prize. Verlin Boeder Club Treasurer and Raffle Chairman collecting club dues, raffle ticket funds and sign up sheet for Fun Fly. The spectator area was full of great items for sale at bargain prices. More individuals should have taken advantage of the items for sale. We wish to thank Gene Coleman for cooking the Hot dogs, etc., Mickey Ohland for bringing the Our next Fun Fly will be scheduled around March of 2007 and we will arrange the events that even a beginner pilot can participate and win a prize.

- 6 - DEBBIE SOLOS Ryan Archer with his proud parents had a perfect score in his competition class, at Tucson this year to take first place. Debbie started flight training with Gene Coleman about April 2006 and soloed on November 11, Veterans Day. She has since flown solo about 4 times. She is an aerospace engineer with Orbital Science Co. in Chandler and a very nice young lady. CONTRATULATIONS DEBBIE! New Students & Instructors Instructor Don Wegrzyn Student Werner Schmid Ryan Archer Takes first place at 2006 TAS You may have seen Ryan practicing at the EVA field just before the competition. Ryan, who was mentored by Chip Hyde and our own Bernie Boland, spent many hours fine-tuning the maneuvers Ryan would fly to take him to the top of his class to win. Ryan was flying a Chip Hyde Extra 300S powered by a Desert Air 100cc Engine. He was using JR 10X radio equipment. Ryan has been flying for five years. Congratulations Ryan for your accomplishment as a result of your hard work and many hours at the stick practicing.

If there are questions contact me at: EVA So. 40 th Street Phoenix, AZ By, Verlin6@qwest.net, or phone: Happy flying and smooth landings, lets all enjoy the cool winter. Verlin Proposed changes to EVA Bylaws. June 7, 2007 The Board recommends that these proposed amendments to the East Valley Aviator (EVA) Bylaws be approved by the membership at the December 2006 general meeting. They correct minor inconsistencies and clarify existing sections, but some important changes affect membership renewal required for use of the flying field and how special membership meetings can be requested. They will be incorporated into the Club Bylaws when approved. 1. Add the following between the heading ARTICLE I and MEMBERSHIP that sets forth the Club s objective and purpose. The purpose of the EVA Club is provide a safe friendly place to fly radio controlled aircraft and to foster closer working relationships with the community in an endeavor to promote the hobby. 2. Art I Sec 4 A. Membership Classifications. Change the first sentence to read The EVA has four classes and add the following category. Honorary. (Non-flying former members who have made significant contributions to the Club and other community individuals that have been particularly supportive of the Club. This will consolidate the honorary membership classes into one section.

Art I Sec 6 A. Membership Package. Delete item A. Copy of the Bylaws. Designate the remaining items A through D. The Bylaws are normally available on the web site and are posted at the field. Members can request a copy from the Treasurer. 4. Art I Sec 8 Honorary Membership. Delete this section as it has been incorporated into Section 4 A. 5. Art II Section 4 Delinquencies. Item B. Change January 31 to read January 1. This will conform to the Club operating year. 6. Art II Section 4. Add new Item C and change former Item C to D. The Club year and the AMA year are January 1 through December 31. The AMA does not have a grace period and unless renewed, AMA insurance coverage terminates December 31. EVA Club renewal requires AMA coverage and members who are delinquent on January 1 are presumed to be without AMA insurance. This will insure that all flyers have current AMA coverage. shall vote affirmative.
