2 President's Podium Presented by Lin Andresen Hello fellow East Valley Aviators. The 2018/2019 EVA flying season is already about half over but we still have a few months left before the summer heat becomes an issue in the Apache Junction Arizona area. The weather the past few weeks has been rather cool and windy in the mornings so the early-day flying has been left up to a few hardy souls who don t mind the cold. As a year-round resident, I get to fly in the winter and summer. The summer months flying time is the opposite of the winter flying time. During the winter, when it is cold and breezy, flyers at EVA tend to wait for the day to warm up a little before they show up. In the summer months, however, EVA flyers tend to show up at the field either before or just as the sun comes up and are long gone before noon. I guess, to enjoy our sport, we have to just do what we have to do to tolerate the conditions. The EVA just completed our first event of the New Year, the annual First-Day Fly-In and breakfast. The weather was wet and cold but the rain stopped early in the morning giving those who attended a good time. Those who were able to attend were busy flying and eating for most of the morning. The first flight of the year was accomplished by a shivering Rusty Fried who flew an electric warbird. Rusty was awarded a much deserved prize for his accomplishment A calendar that highlights Outhouses throughout the world. Yes, we did have fun. One of the things that made the First-Day Fly-in possible was because of a good-deed accomplished by club member Rich Standage early last week. Rich delivered two loads of crushed concrete to the field and spread it on the entrance road between the two entry gates and a little beyond. That turned a rough, sometimes very muddy roadway into a solid, passible entry way. Thanks Rich! We have a bunch of great guys (and gals) at this club who help out and make this club a great place to enjoy our hobby. We still have several great club events coming this year some that involve eating. Like our former president Mike Jeffries used to say, We are an eating club with a flying disorder. I have included an EVA event calendar with my monthly message so you can see what s coming. Well that s all for now folks. Fly safe, have fun, and please keep up the EVA reputation of being the friendliest club in the West. Lin Andresen EVA president

3 Secretary s Report Submitted by Sid Frede East Valley Aviators General Membership Meeting Minutes 12/5/2018 President Lin Andresen called the meeting to 7pm Location: Valle Del Oro New Members: none Solo Pilot: none Guests one Annual Dues Due December 31 st. Late fee of $10 after 1/31/2019 Maintenance We suffered significant damage to entry this summer during two large monsoon storms. First storm August 9 th 3 rain in 45 minutes washed out entry. Sid Frede rented bobcat and several other members (see October newsletter) filled in the washout and road was opened the following Tuesday. 10 days later we received another 2 ½. Road washed out worse than the first time. A recent new member had the expertise and equipment and volunteered to fix the road. Rich Standage repaired the entry and did an excellent job! Thanks Rich Due the work done previously to stabilize the field, and laser grading to of the field to the north, the runway suffered no damage from the storms. We are looking at placing some crushed, recycled concrete to the entry gate area this winter to make the entry more resistant to the inevitable summer storms. Electric Field A member has been working on repairing railing etc. We are evaluating some enhancements for If you have any suggestions, please contact any of the Board Members.

4 Drones Drones are an expanding part of our hobby. It is important to establish rules and a safe area for flight. Serval members are setting up a course and the club will establish an area for drones only. They will fly south and east of the electric field area out over the desert to the south. The deadline of the electric field and car race track will be outside of the drone area. They will set up a course for FPV. They will build a shade cover and set up some tables for the pilots. Contests could also be held without effecting any of the flight areas of the club. This should also help us to attract younger members to the club and provide a safe environment for all club members. Ironwood Cleanup - October 27 th Approximately 15 members assisted. Not too much trash this time. The recent road construction cleaned up the shoulders Swap Meet/Fun Fly/Lunch November 3 rd Good crowd. Club table contributed about $200 to club treasury. Will look at scheduling later in year to accommodate arrival of winter visitors. Turkey Fry & Fly November 24 th Approximately 75 people attended. Lots of good turkey and side dishes. Car Track Have asked to move shade screen to south side of field. Field Work Day December 8 th Meet at field at 8am to move car track ramada and spray weeds. Bring a sprayer and we will have the spray mixed. January 1 st Breakfast and Fly First flyer in the air for 2019 will get a Grand (booby?) prize! John Mitchell training officer is retiring after almost 10 years of service Thanks John! Floyd Brown will take over John s duties. Treasurers/Membership 236 member actives. Approximately 85 have paid 2019 dues. Our annual revenue to run the club comes primarily from dues due in December. Please make sure you pay your dues to avoid late fee of $10. Elections: Electronic Ballot was ed to all members on the list. Paper ballots were available at this meeting if members hadn t voted online.
