3 DCRC September Club Meeting BY DOUG HARPER The meeting, held at the County Office Building, was called to order by President Jim McDaniel at 7:36 PM. Jim asked for the introduction of any new members or guests. Steve Deminco is a new member (for the second time). He is a frequent attendee at the field. Jim announced that tonight is the nomination for three new Board Members. County Liaison: Jim spent some time talking about the good relationship we have with Montgomery County. The Park and Planning Director has retired and a new group is coming in. Jim continues to maintain a good relationship with the County. We are the only activity that has an MOU which basically calls on DCRC to operate the flying field. Jim also mentioned that the field is in great shape. Events: Andy Kane reported on the Bealeton event held last weekend. We had 28 pilots and perfect weather. We had a raffle, a catered dinner, and a good time was had by all. Adel won both raffle prizes. Boy Scout troop 200 from Yorktown, VA, were in attendance. They were given stick time on the buddy box (by Andy and Jim) and also had free Stearman rides. Andy Finizio announced that Octoberfest starts at 10 AM on Sunday September 30. Food and funfly will be provided. Andy Kane announced that this weekend is the 70th Anniversary Air Force show at Andrews Air Base with many flying acts. Training/Community Outreach : Jim Fisher reported that flight training is a go for tomorrow. The weather is looking good. Field Maintenance: David announced that the field and chargers are in great shape. Jim announced that the field gate lock was broken (again) and has been replaced. If you are the last one out please apply the locks and hasp in the correct orientation as seen above. So the farmer and county can have access to the field via the keyed lock. Membership: Jose Sanchez is collecting 2017 dues. He will certainly accept checks but would prefer Paypal use by members. Jose will start taking 2018 dues shortly. Safety Coordinator: Walt Gallaugher had no report. Raffle: Doug Hinken brought a Valiant 1.3M BNF park flyer for tonight's raffle. The winning ticket was held by Guy Riso who received a fair amount of guff for winning. Treasure s Report: Doug wrote three checks in excess of $100 this month. He had a copy of the YTD Budget Report for anyone who cares to see it. Doug is working on next year's budget which will be covered at next week's Board Meeting. Web Site: Jose Sanchez is in the process of moving our web site to a new system. The new system offers many new functions but will require a fair amount of time and effort. Newsletter: Andy Kane will keep doing the newsletter and would appreciate input. New/Old Business: Jim spent some Page 3 time describing the Board Member nomination and election process. There are three Board Members who have finished their terms: Andy Finizio, Jim Fisher and Jose Sanchez. Jim then opened the floor to nominations for next month's election for three new Board Members. The following people were nominated and seconded: Jose Sanchez, Jim Fisher, Doug Hinken, Guy Riso, Joe Pauli, Bob Sparks, Andy Finizio (who declined to run). Andy Kane requested that the six nominees provide him a short writeup and photo for the newsletter. Jim stressed that we need a quorum of 18% of total adult members for next month's election. Alan Hoffman offered the suggestion that the Board try to give all six nominees meaningful tasks for the Club even though only 3 will be elected to the Board. Model Shop: None. Program: No program tonight. The meeting adjourned at 9:00PM. Notice: Please note that all of the 2017 club meetings will now be held on the 3rd Friday of the Month at Montgomery County Council building Basement Auditorium 100 Maryland Ave Rockville, MD starting at 7:30 pm Come to the meeting to pick up on some fantastic raffle prizes and some great modeling information. And bring your model in for the model shop. Check the club calendar!
4 DCRC September Board Meeting BY DOUG HARPER The meeting, held at the home of Andy Kane, was called to order by President Jim McDaniel at 7:24 PM. In attendance were Andy Kane, Jim McDaniel, David Garrison, Andy Finizio, Walt Gallaugher, Doug Harper, Jim Fisher, Ed Leibolt. Light fare was provided by Andy Kane for all to enjoy. Jim thanked Andy Finizio for his many years of service to the Club as a Board Member. Committee Reports: Public Relations & County Liaison: Jim McDaniel reported that the County managed deer hunt is on again this year but not at our field. Sound & Safety: Walt Gallaugher Field Maintenance: David Garrison will be looking at replacing the roof on the Hoffman Hangar, probably sometime next spring. Walt Gallaugher is looking into replacement of the field entrance sign. Flight Instruction/Awards: Jim Fisher and Ed Leibolt are having discussions on flight training for next year. Events: Andy Finizio made a suggestion to reinstate an event we used to do at the field called Summerfest. The Board agreed that this was a good idea. Ed Leibolt presented several thoughts on ways to increase/ improve some of our other events to attract more participants. He specifically talked about Warbirds Over Boyds and the Electric Fly as two candidates for this. The Board had a discussion on these ideas but decided to revisit these items next month when the new Board is in place. Treasurer: Doug Harper reported that he wrote five checks over $100 in the last month. He presented a YTD Budget report to the Board for their consideration. In addition, Doug presented a tentative 2018 Budget for the Board's consideration which doesn't require any increase in dues. The Board recommended that a new event line item be added for an additional Club event called Summerfest. After much deliberation, the Board unanimously a c c e p t e d t h i s amended budget. A final vote on this budget will be held at next month's Board Meeting after the election of new Board Members. Page 4 Membership: Jose Sanchez reported that we currently have 138 adult members. Newsletter: Andy Kane. No report. Web Master: Jose Sanchez. No report. Old Business/New Business: Jim reviewed the coming election at next month's Club Meeting. Jose Sanchez, Jim Fisher, Joe Pauli, Bob Sparks, Guy Riso, and Doug Hinken are running for three positions. Jim stressed that we need a quorum of 18% of adult members to vote. We currently have 138 adult members which results in 25 members required. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM. Another beautiful Wednesday Thank You by Fernando Hernandez
5 DCRC/Oktoberfest By Andy Kane Photos by Bob Sparks Wow the summer season is gone and fall is upon us. Cooler temps and winds now rule the upcoming days. Let it be known to all that the DCRC Members come rain or shine, wind or freezing temps to our Oktoberfest for that seasonal meal that Andy produces. Beer Bratwursts, Sweet Sausages, Roasted Peppers and Onions, Hot Sauerkraut, Potato Salads, German Chocolate Cake, cookies, chips and plenty of food for all to enjoy. Thank you to all that helped with the shopping, prep, cooking and cleanup for this event. And congratulations to the lucky raffle winners. Robert Shenk and Steve DeMinco. 6 Bob Sparks Cut to the chase. Why vote for me? While I think that the club is in good shape generally, my experiences over the past year and more suggest that a few improvements are possible. With a little work, some of the rough edges could be smoothed, and the result might slow or even reverse the decline in membership numbers. I would like the opportunity to help make that happen. So who am I? I am a retired computer engineer, having served time with GE and MITRE. I live in Boyds, a little over three miles north of the field. The household is just me and my canine overlord Ricky, whom some of you have met. I joined the club in early 2016, and with a kick-start from the training program and much more time spent with some very patient and generous experienced fliers, I managed to certify last fall. I spend a lot of time at the field, and am there most decent afternoons, trying to flog the little grey flying cells whenever the armchair conversation under the gazebo lags. I know what it is to get involved in an organization like our club. I served many terms as a director of one of Montgomery Village's largest HOAs, including several stints as treasurer and several more as president. I have the luxury of plenty of uncommitted time to devote to the club. I also have an appreciation for what is working well, and have no intention of trying to fix what ain't broke. Give me a chance to demonstrate all of the above and I promise to do my best for the club. Candidates statements for the 2017 Board of Directors positions. Joe Pauley Fellow DCRC Members, My name is Joe Pauley. At the September club meeting I was nominated as one of the candidates for one of the three open board member positions for 2017/18. I would like the opportunity to give back to the club by serving as one of the board members. I have been a DCRC Member off and on since 1991 (took about 20 years off to raise kids). I became more active in the club over the past 5-6 six years through the club s flight training program, first as one of the ground crew and then as one of the flight instructors. More recently I was asked to be an assistant Sound and Safety officer under Walt Gallaugher s apprenticeship. I hope that you can make the next club meeting Friday 20 October to vote on the nominees to fill the three open board member positions and will consider me for one of these positions.
