1 Volume 36, #5 May, 2004 President's Message Our Spring has started out with cooler than normal weather but that s O.K. I have been bottling up some of this cool weather to save for July and August. Gertie sure does run better in this weather then in the 100 degree heat. It has not deterred our club activities from getting off to a brisk start. Our visit to the Silvercrest Nursing Home on Saturday was cool but much appreciated. On Sunday we toured to Fremont. It was a perfect day for a ride in the country. Read on in the newsletter about these events. We have three great events coming up in the near future so circle your calendar and plan to attend. May 8 th -- Come join with the Fremont Antique Car Club to tour the private car collection of Bernie Taulborg. We will meet at Bernie s, 180 th a half mile north of Fort Street, at 11:00 A.M. Come out Maple Street to 180 th and turn north, go to Fort, then one half mile further north. After the tour we will have a catered lunch at an area park, location to be announced at the tour. Cost for lunch will be $4.00 per person. This will be a great opportunity to view a truly fabulous collection and have some fun and friendship at the picnic. If you did not already sign up at the April meeting but would like to attend, give me a call We need a good idea of how many for lunch. May 31 st -- Our 2004 Omaha Ford Show and Shine will be in the historic Old Market District. This is going to be a great family day. In addition to the car show, there are many unique shops and restaurants to visit. Our Ford Show Committee is busy making plans for the show. We have about 20 volunteers already signed up to help with the show but could use six or eight more. We need door prizes and items for our goodie bags. If you can help or know where to get these items, give me a call. We also need help getting the word out to the other car clubs with Ford products. If you know people in these clubs with Ford products, please give them a call. We will have brochures to hand out within the next week. June 12 th-- Our regular club meeting will be special. Carol Ahlgren, from the National Park Service, will have a historical presentation on the famed Lincoln Highway. This promises to be a great evening, so circle your calendar now and plan to attend. Thank You to all the folks that helped out at our Litter Pick Up on April 10 th. With 14 people, it only took us about an hour and one half to cover our territory. No special finds were reported but the camaraderie was great. Help fill our Food Bank donation box at each regular meeting. Bring a can of food with you to every meeting. Your donation is very much appreciated. See You at the meeting! Don Fords and More in 2004

3 Here is your chance to see (and eat in) a Hausbarn! Join the tour to Manning, Iowa on Saturday, June 5 (not Sunday, the 6 th as you might have heard earlier). We will leave the Crescent, Iowa Stop & Shop at 9AM Sharp. The trip to Manning is approximately 70 miles. In Manning we will visit a historic farmstead that includes an authentic German Hausbarn. This barn was built in Germany in 1660 and moved to Manning in When it was dismantled, diagrams were made, timbers marked, boxed and shipped to Manning. It was not until 1999 that a master German carpenter arrived here to lead a band of volunteers from Germany and the US to reconstruct the Hausbarn. Professional thatchers from Germany also came here to construct the roof using reeds grown only near the Baltic Sea. Completion of this structure was celebrated in August of You might be wondering what exactly is a Hausbarn. It dates back to the 17 th and 18 th centuries and was a home that was shared by families and their livestock. This should be an interesting tour, so plan to attend. We will also dine in the Hausbarn restaurant. We will order off the menu which includes traditional German fare like Weiner Schnitzel, plus American-sounding food like Burgermeister Burger. A copy of the menu will be available at the May meeting. A sign up sheet will be there also. Please sign up if you are interested in the tour or call Don or Janet Graves ( ) by June 3 rd at the latest. 4 Tech Talk On April 17 th Mike Kauss hosted our tech talk on lubricating the Model A. With Lee Hendrix s car up on the hoist, we all learned the in s and out s of lubrication. While lubricating his car Lee found a bent tie rod, no wonder his car steered so hard!! With Rich Molden s help his tie rod was removed and straightened and put back on. Lee reports that she drives like a dream now. Thanks to Sharon and Mary for a delicious lunch and to Mike for a great learning experience. SILVERCREST NURSING HOME VISIT Our visit to the Silvercrest Nursing Home on May 1 st was very much appreciated by the residents and staff. We got lots of oohh s and ahh s from the folks. It was great to hear some of the experiences of yesteryear these folks had with their Model A s. This was their first annual Car Show and we have already been invited back for next year.
5 We will be going the The Rose in Treynor, Iowa on May 20, 2004 for our eat out at 7PM. The Rose is on Highway 92 going east from Council Bluffs. The Rose is on the left hand side of the highway as you travel on the west end of Treynor. We will have separate tickets. The old-timers among us might remember when these folks were in Omaha at about 78 th St. just South of Dodge Rose s Lodge. See you all there. Leonard Johnson had surgery and is getting better. Gloria Johnson is having a hernia operation and hope all goes well. We hope Leonard and Gloria get well soon. Al Rohrberg is in the hospital. We hope you get better and see you soon. Ruby Monahan is having Chemo treatments again. The Doctor caught the cancer in the early stages again and we will fight this again. Jan Hartenhoff is having knee replacement surgery this week. We hope she will be up and going again soon. May 2 Breakfast and Tour Those American Legion folks sure did a good job of feeding us. What a spread! Some Meadowlarks were seen visiting that breakfast buffet more than once, or twice, or even more than three times?? We took a leisurely drive to Fremont on some of those roads we didn t know existed before that day. We were a little early for the antique stores, so we went to Sapp Brothers to warm up and, well, you know. We finally got to the antique stores and we didn t see everyone when they left, but we don t think anyone was loaded down with many antiques. The only bad part of the day was that it thought it was March 2 instead of May 2. It was so cold and windy that we didn t spend much time on the tire-kickin and admiring the Model A part.
