13 11 Cuyahoga County Public Library Report of the Executive Director February 28, 2017 We began offering the Opportunity Card option on August 29 th, On that date, we converted 136,900 customer accounts from a delinquent status to Opportunity Card status because they had fines between $10 and $100. A snapshot taken on 1/4/2017 shows that currently 144,369 customers are in Opportunity Card status. We had 4,227 inactive cardholders come back to the library following the Opportunity Card announcement, presumably because fines no longer prevented them from checking out a limited number of items. Fifty-six (56) of those inactive cardholders hadn t used the library in 10+ years! In recent years, the IRS and Ohio Department of Taxation have significantly reduced the number of printed tax forms provided to public libraries for distribution to the public. In late 2016, the State of Ohio and the Regional Income Tax Authority (RITA) announced that they would no longer provide printed tax forms to libraries, citing printing expenses and steady decreases in the amount of paper tax filings. The Graphics Department (GFX) is once again coming to the rescue this tax season to provide tax forms for Branch customers. In January, GFX provided an initial distribution of State and RITA forms to all Branches. Tax forms and publications under 20 pages are currently available to the public at no charge. Branches charged a nominal $1.00 fee for tax publications over 20 pages. Much of the work that the GFX production team does remains behind-the-scenes, but this effort is to keep branches wellstocked with tax forms is worth highlighting, and demonstrates their strong commitment to excellent internal and external customer service. Free copies of CCPL s Spring 2017 Program Guide magazine are now available in CCPL Branches as well as Tri-C, Baldwin-Wallace University, Notre Dame College, and a variety of local nonprofits. 18 16 On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Berea Branch Library hosted an afternoon showing of the movie Selma. 14 community members attended the movie, and 8 stayed afterwards for a discussion about the movie, its themes, and how these themes are relevant in our communities today. Much of the discussion revolved around what we can do personally in our communities and own lives to stand up for important causes and support fellow community members. The discussion was led by Jay T. Hairston, Assistant Dean of Students, at Baldwin Wallace University. Middleburg Heights Branch manager, Holly Camino attended the Berea Area City Schools Business meeting. She shared with the group of 25 school and business individuals about the current efforts of the Library to promote homework help in our Libraries. Holly reached out to the President of the PTA council and has a scheduled meeting with the district PTA group to talk about the homework mentor program. Acting PSLII, Bridget Lavelle, has done an outstanding job reaching out to local newspapers and community organizations. The Brooklyn Branch programs will now appear monthly in the Northeast Informer with a potential Library article highlighting service each month. Now that contacts have been made, meetings and planning has begun, beginning with a deposit collection of PlayAways to be placed at the Recreation Center for exercisers. The latest offering for South Euclid-Lyndhurst s Transform Music series, A Concert with the Singing Angels was held on Sunday, January 22 nd. There were over 120 people in attendance. This program was part of The Transform Music innovation grant. Warrensville City Officials joined the weekly poetry session at the Warrensville Branch. Many of the officials read their original poetry. The participants included Raymon Turner, Community Resource Manager; Angela Smith-Souza, Director of Communication and Activities; Tia Simmons, Police Dispatch Coordinator, and Carletta Fellows, Director of Strategic Initiatives. On January 5 th, at the Independence Branch, Author John Vacha presented a program about Cleveland's Great Lakes Exposition of Vacha, Author of Meet me on Lake Erie, Dearie! brought the exposition to life as he discussed his book and shared photos from the event. There were 26 people attended the program. A teen customer, Alanna, a senior at Hathaway Brown School, volunteered last year for Maple Heights Martin Luther King Day of Service. She was so inspired that she wrote an article in her school's online newspaper about how Martin Luther King Day should be "a day on and not a day off". She planned and led her school's first ever Martin Luther King Day program geared towards children in grades K-5. Volunteers read stories about Dr. King to small groups then the children created their own dream flags detailing their hopes and dreams for the future. A storyteller entertained the children and they all created a banner with their handprints to underscore the theme of the story, "together, we can do great things". Best of all, she organized a book drive that collected three boxes of books which she then brought in to Maple Heights to support our book drive on January 16 th. 6 P age

19 17 On January 12 th, 102 people were in attendance at the Orange Branch to learn about mindfulness from presenter Alex Ash of Thrive Cleveland. The program is part of the partnership between CCPL and Thrive. Inspiration for the program came from the book 10% Happier by Dan Harris. The presenter talked about putting space between our emotions and our reactions, suggested resources for guided meditation and led the group in a three-minute body scan meditation. She discussed how practicing mindfulness and meditation can help with stress, depression and anxiety. The most important thing to remember is that happiness and mindfulness are skills that can be learned and practiced. On January 10 th, Southeast Branch Manager, Vicki Adams Cook, Children s Librarian, Linda Sleeman, and Teen Librarian, Katie Jackson met with Literary and Learning Division Director, Pam Jankowski and Youth, Literacy Manager Sue Kirschner to discuss a partnership with representatives of Cleveland Housing and Urban Development Department. HUD has partnered with the National Book-Rich Environment (BRE) initiative and My Brother s Keeper Task Force to create programs and partnership that introduce families residing in Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) Developments to libraries, literacy and the importance of early literacy skills. Southeast is the only CCPL Branch serving a community with a CMHA Development. Cognosante concluded weekly Affordable Care Act Enrollment assistance at 19 branches. Over a three-month period, 1142 customers engaged in conversation regarding the Affordable Care Act and 781 enrolled in health care. Youth Literacy and Outreach Manager, Sue Kirschner hosted 40 colleagues at the Warrensville Heights Branch for the January meeting of Early Ages, Healthy Stages sponsored by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. It continues to be an enthusiastic group seeking ways to assist families in developing a healthy lifestyle which includes toys and bookables from our collection. Once again Cuyahoga County Public Library was the only organization invited to take part in the Cleveland Orchestra Day of Celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s birthday. An exciting change this year was the ability for Sue Kirschner, Youth Literacy and Outreach Manager, to show attendees our Toy Gallery via a system laptop and wireless connection. Over 500 people viewed the gallery, requested toys or played with the toys brought along for the special occasion. In honor of Martin Luther King, CCPL held a day of service on MLK Day where approximately 110 volunteers assisted with sorting book donations at all 27 branches. On Wednesday, 38 volunteers sorted and packed books for 152 hours. On Thursday, 12 volunteers worked for 48 hours and on Friday, 5 volunteers delivered the book donations to Reach out and Read locations. The book drive resulted in 13,184 books distributed to our agency partners: Reach Out and Read and Cleveland Kids Book Bank. 7 P age

20 18 65 kids and adults of all ages enjoyed beating the Cleveland weather at a fun and interactive Under the Sea Beach party at the Parma-Snow Branch. Kids got to make several crafts from 3D ocean scenes to watercolor salt painting and more. The shark chum toss and sand and shell sensory bins were also a hit as was the storytime that proceeded the activities. Solon Branch, Mark Faldowski went to a local assisted living facility and nursing home, Emerald Ridge, to hold a Black History program for the residents on 1/26/17. About 20 people came to reminisce about and listen to the music of some of the most influential black musicians of the 20th century. The rollicking sounds of the Workmen's Circle Klezmer Orchestra brought the audience to their feet at the Beachwood on January 15 th. As the band filed in before the show, it became evident that that this was indeed an orchestra, with more than 20 members playing various instruments. The audience was large as well, with a total estimated crowd of 85 people in the room. 8 P age
