8 HISTORICAL ISSUES Absolute monarchy that closed itself off from the rest of the world until the midnineteenth century. Went through rapid industrialization. Modeled its military and industrial expansion on European countries and the US.

9 HISTORICAL ISSUES By the early 1930s, they began invading neighboring countries (Korea and China). This brought them into conflict with the US, the UK, and other countries.

10 WORLD WAR II Japan was on the side of the Axis Powers during WWII, along with Germany & Italy Major countries they fought included the USA & China Attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 led to the US entry into war

11 POST-WWII RECOVERY Japan was devastated after WWII (the only victim of an atomic attack in history) Country had very few raw materials or resources, no factories, little infrastructure Therefore, the economic boom of Japan since WWII is nothing short of an economic miracle

12 JAPANESE ECONOMY Two major elements Taking existing inventions and making them better(they focused on cars and electronics) Team-oriented work force Japanese are never late to work; will stay late to meet goals(with no overtime pay); will go to work sick(and wear masks); believe in uniformity

Leader is almost god. South remains democratic/capitalistic

27 A STARK CONTRAST South Korea is rich, free, and a major producer/exporter North Korea is very poor, among the most restrictive (if not the most), and relies on international handouts to meagerly feed its population Profits from sale of weapons (missiles) and minerals go to the elite ruling class
