The theme of this year s NNW is Power of the Press. AUGUST Gross Advertising Sales $ 279, From The Field Feature College class leads to ad career for Story Thanks to a marketing class at Arkansas State University (ASU), Tara Story was introduced to newspaper ad sales which has been a good career fit for The Jonesboro Sun major accounts manager. One day a girl in my marketing class announced that the Herald our college newspaper was looking for students to work on its advertising staff. So I worked there my last year at ASU, Story said. In 2003, Story graduated with a degree in journalism and took a job at the Trumann Democrat. There were only myself and two other employees on the staff so we did a little of everything we sold and designed ads, wrote stories and took photos, she said. After 18 months, Story took a job as classified adviser at the Commercial Appeal in Memphis. Then a year later she went to work as ad coordinator at the Memphis Business Journal. I was at the Memphis Business Journal for about four-and-a-half years when the recession hit, and since my job was a support position, I was laid continued on page 2 Tara Story has been the major accounts manager for The Sun in Jonesboro for three years. The committee is also asking newspapers to editorialize locally about how your newspaper is relevant to your community. This can be about your government watchdog role, coverage of community events, providing timely public notices, etc. Following NNW, these materials will remain on the website and can be accessed by newspapers for use throughout the year since the message is timeless National Newspaper Week logo available for download to use in your newspaper at nationalnewspaperweek.com. (Approx. 800 words) Crossword puzzle feature (originally offered in 2012; not date sensitive) From the field continued from page 1 off, Story said. Of course, I was upset. But looking back, it was a blessing. My dad had been diagnosed with cancer, and I was able to spend a lot of time with him and help my mother care for him the last year of his life. Plus, my plan had always been to move back to Northeast Arkansas to be near family before starting a family. I grew up in Trumann, and my husband is from Brookland. However, at the time we moved back, jobs were hard to find. So I took a class at H&R Block and worked there through that tax season. That led to an office administrative type job at another small company in town. I worked there for about a year and a half before coming to work at the Jonesboro Sun three years ago. I saw my current job at The Sun listed in a classified ad. It sounded very familiar much like my job at the Memphis Business Journal, which I loved. So I submitted my resume. As major accounts manager, Story works a lot through and faxes because her clients are in various cities around the United States. She coordinates all the newspaper s pre-prints. Most of her customers are companies like Walmart and Target. The only disadvantage of working with major accounts is the lack of control I have. It s hard to persuade these big companies that they need to advertise in local special sections. Plus, I have to go through an advertising agency to get an answer from the client. It s a long chain to go through, and sometimes by the time I get an answer, the section is already closed, she said. However, Story said a furniture store in Jonesboro that normally runs only one or two pre-prints a year was moving to a new location, and she was successful in selling the store an ad that ran every day for four weeks. We have an ad space on the top right corner of Page 1, and that was a big deal to get that furniture company to run a local ad for four weeks, she said. I think it proved to them that newspaper advertising actually works. Story said she has learned to take good notes when working with a customer, which helps to build relationships. If it is important to the client, then it should be important to the ad sales person. It will impress customers that you remember the details, she said. Ad sales people should always be a customer of their customers. Lisa A. Lynn, advertising director at The Sun, said Story is one of the best assets at the newspaper. Tara is an exemplary associate in our ad department, Lynn said. She is a rare combination of competency, caring and completeness. She cares very much for our customers and the quality of the product we produce. She sees a project through from start to finish. Tara is really outstanding. I couldn t ask for a better employee. Story and her husband, Tony, who also graduated from ASU, are Red Wolves fans and enjoy attending athletic events at the college especially football games. They have one daughter, Darby, who is 3. 2 September 2015 AdNews
