He later left to help found a weekly newspaper in Texarkana, but was back in El Dorado as advertising director in Smith was 29 when he moved to Little Rock after the Hussman family purchased the Arkansas Democrat, and he played a huge role in the newspaper war that ensued with the Arkansas Gazette. He was there also to play a role when the Democrat emerged as the victor in the war and the two newspapers were merged into one, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. JUNE Gross Advertising Sales $ 167, From The Field Feature Wallace: Basic ad sales have not changed Doug Wallace plans media campaign for one of his many clients. Even with all the changes that have taken place in newspaper production over the past 30 years, Doug Wallace says selling advertising has basically stayed the same. Wallace, senior ad representative for key and major accounts at the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, says selling is still about relationships. It makes all the difference in the world to visit with someone face to face when selling anything, Wallace said. By getting to know your customers, you build a trust, and they know you are giving them the best advice you can. These days a newspaper ad salesperson needs to be a complete media rep. Newspapers are still an effective advertising tool, and it is my job to help customers get a return on their investment. I m happy when my customers do well. Wallace said when the recession hit, many businesses had the wind knocked out of them, and continued on page 6 July 2015 AdNews 1

2 SuperConvention continued from page 1 is the Little Rock City Hall reporter at the Arkansas Democrat- Gazette where she has worked for the past two-and-a-half years. She completed a B.A. in journalism at the University of Memphis, graduating summa cum laude, first in her class. Chelsea Boozer accepts the Freedom of Information award from John Bland, publisher of The Times Dispatch in Walnut Ridge. A winner of the national College Press Freedom Award presented by the Student Press Law Center, Boozer devoted much of her undergraduate career to holding campus police and student government accountable. While a student, she won a national Investigative Reporters and Editors Award and two national William Randolph Hearst Awards. Boozer was also named College Journalist of the Year by the Southeastern Journalism Conference and won a Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. Since she s been at the Democrat-Gazette, Boozer wrote a series of articles that led to the firing of a wastewater CEO and his chief executive. In 2014, she was selected along with 12 other American journalists for a weeklong Fulbright fellowship in Berlin. Earlier this year she won a first-place regional Great Plains Award for beat reporting. A Distinguished Service Award was presented to John Mobbs, who retired from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in 2012 after more than 25 years as advertising director. Mobbs directed the largest advertising staff in Arkansas. He was a long-time member of the Arkansas Advertising Federation and served as chairman of the ADDY Awards. Mobbs was a member of the Mid-West Advertising Executives Association and served twice as its president. He was also a member of the Sales & Marketing Executives International. Dr. Bill Downs, retired chairman of the Department of Mass Communications at Ouachita Baptist University (OBU), also was presented a Distinguished Service Award. Downs arrived at OBU in 1966 and served as director of public relations and taught in the Department of Journalism. He established OBU s national reputation as adviser of the Ouachitonian yearbook and The Signal newspaper, both of which consistently receive top national awards. Downs influenced scores of future newspaper reporters, photographers, editors and countless other communications-related jobs during his 41 years at the university. Those students are actively involved in newspapers, magazines, advertising and other careers through the United States. Their work reflects the dedication, attention to detail and dedication to the truth that was taught by Downs. The Headliner of the Year Award was also presented at the SuperConvention. This year s recipient was Bret Bielema, head football coach at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. More than 300 people attended this year s SuperConvention. 6 From the field continued from page 1 newspapers were hit hard, too. I feel like we helped some customers stay in business, and we have worked hard to maintain our product. he said. He said the population growth in Northwest Arkansas, which is now at about a half a million people, has made for a good market, but a challenging one as well. The DMA in Northwest Arkansas covers 12 counties in the state as well as McDonald County in Missouri. It is based upon drive time since many people commute from Missouri to work in Northwest Arkansas. So we have a very unique situation. So unique that Wallace frequently travels to visit with advertising agencies in places like Minneapolis and Dallas to try and explain the situation. These out-of-state ad agency folks don t have a clue, and it s hard to explain, Wallace said. With Walmart headquartered here, they control a great deal of the media especially pre-prints and inserts with newspapers. So I have to travel to get in front of agency people more so than other media. Of course, digital and social media have changed how some businesses advertise. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette is deep into social media and digital. We have part of our advertising staff totally dedicated to it. They can do anything customers need from creating digital ads to building complete websites. We are very flexible, and we have a large company behind us, he said. Wallace said the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette website (nwaonline.com) averages two million hits a month, and the newspaper s Whole Hog Sports site gets about a million. However, even with the growth of digital, the ad rep doesn t believe it is the savior to print. I have read that for every dollar lost in print advertising that it takes $9 online to bring it back. So we have an uphill battle especially with small mom and pop businesses. The big guys like Walmart are all about digital. So that s where it s at, and there s no end to digital. In fact, Walmart is going to mobile apps. So it is continually changing, he said. By getting to know your customers, you build a trust, and they know you are giving them the best advice you can. Wallace said the great thing about digital is the metrics and analytics that you can obtain to see if an ad is successful. That s unlike when Wallace graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1969 with a marketing degree and digital wasn t on the map yet. His first job out of college was with Sanger Harris, a large department store in Dallas. He moved back to his native Little Rock after several years and took a job as the ad manager for an appliance distributor. His newspaper advertising experience began with Donrey Media in Springdale in When the Democrat-Gazette started printing a Northwest Arkansas edition in 1997, Wallace moved over to work for WEHCO, Inc. Growing up in Little Rock and graduating from Catholic High, Wallace felt a connection with the Democrat-Gazette having delivered papers for both the old Arkansas Gazette and for the Democrat. Long before digital was in the picture, Wallace said one of his favorite ad campaigns was a vacation photo contest when he was working for the Springdale newspaper. We asked readers to take the Springdale paper with them on vacation, and then take a picture of them holding the newspaper at some location on their trip. They then had to have the photo printed and send it in to the newspaper office. I believe we had photos of people with the newspaper on every continent. Arkansans are a well-traveled bunch. It was extremely popular and a fun promotion. We printed a special section with the photos. People ate it up. However, now it would have to be a digital promotion since everything is instantaneous. Wallace says ad sales is difficult and not for everyone. Deadlines are stressful, and you have to stick with it to be successful, he said. I plan on continuing to fight the fight because I enjoy the folks I work with, and I like the challenge. In the News Eliza Gaines, who has served in several roles with newspapers owned by WEHCO Media, has been named vice president Eliza Gaines of audience development. In this capacity, Eliza will work with our editors and reporters on sharing ideas across our individual newspapers, evaluating new opportunities for content distribution and monetization and promoting efficiency through new technology tools, said Nat Lea, president & CEO of WEHCO Media. Gaines also has served as assistant publisher of the Democrat- Gazette and executive editor of the Sentinel-Record in Hot Springs. Tom Henry recently joined the Courier News in Blytheville as a staff writer. Having spent most of his life in Mississippi County, Henry earned an Tom Henry associate of arts degree from Arkansas Northeastern College in Blytheville before receiving both bachelor s and master s degrees in history from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. The Blytheville Courier News has moved its website from couriernews. net to blythevillecourier.com. The new site has all of the features of the old one only the domain name has changed. addresses for newspaper staff members stay the same except they now end com. Also the Blytheville Courier News has partnered with its sister newspaper, The Osceola Times, to produce a new magazine called Women of Mississippi County. The publication features interesting local women. In the first edition the women include bankers, artists, police officers and more. 6 July 2015 AdNews

9 Join our Statewide Network team! It PAY$ to PLAY! EVA BAKALEKOS, NETWORK ADVERTISING COORDINATOR Is there really anything worse than watching a boring game? Advertising can be like a game. When I worked for a newspaper, I remember one sales meeting where the ad manager was working hard to pump some life into the bored sales staff. She was trying to be very energetic and infectious to those of us who wanted to be motivated, but in looking around, some were doodling on their note pads, some were looking at their watches, some with arms folded, leaning back, looking through slits of their eyes...the worst body language a salesperson can have! The manager was trying to push home the theory behind newspaper readership vs. circulation, which is that in every household there were an average of 2.5 readers per subscription. She tried to joke We re sure the two are whole people but not sure which half left over actually reads the paper...then she stopped for comedic effect and laughter, both of which were minimal. Finally, the silence was broken by bad-body-language-girl who dryly commented... Well, let s hope it s the top half I hate to think what they would be doing with the bottom half... That comment, sadly enough, was actually the highlight and most memorable point of the sales meeting! It s NOT BORING at the NETWORK DEPARTMENT at Arkansas Press Association (APA)! We are constantly searching for EXCITED, MOTIVATED players for our network team!! Did you know that you, as a newspaper sales rep can actually be an extension of the APA Network Sales staff without ever leaving your office? You can, just by selling any of the APA network products which enables you to place your customer s ad in up to 109 Arkansas newspapers!! You can offer statewide or regional coverage! The readership of the Arkansas statewide network is over two million! Now that s exciting! Check out the recent network team of players below they consist of our APA network manager, consultants and the players at member newspapers! All of these reps have sold network ads, made money for their newspaper and collected cash bonuses, trips and/or prizes! I recently suggested to my advertiser that he should upgrade his classified ad and run it statewide in our Arkansas network of papers. I explained that he would reach a larger audience of prospective buyers. He agreed! From the very first week my client s Statewide Classified ad came out in the network papers, he received many, many, calls, which resulted in three potential buyers for his business that s for sale. A very quick, simple ad and my newspaper, Carroll County News, netted $ in revenue for the ten minutes it took to write it up. Plus, I earned bonus money as well! July 2015 AdNews 9
