5 2018 Page 5 Chapter N2 - Humble, TX Kenny & Diane Shults Hello my friends. This year is flying by now and almost over. Diane and I was looking forward to our cruise with Scott and Linda from M2 and now it s over. We had a blast with good friends and we also wished everyone could have been there. The weather wasn t great but we made the best of it. We didn t get to go into port at Honduras because of the wind (maybe the political wind) but either way we went to Cozumel twice. We played Country Music Trivia and we tied with Scott and Linda for first place, so they gave both of us a 24-carat gold (encased in plastic for safety) ship on a stick. Scott and I challenged the Thacker s and Fleming s to win one also. Hmmmmmm, you will have to ask Mike how that went. Thanksgiving is almost here and that means time to reflect on all the good things in our lives. Things like spending time with family and friends being able to enjoy riding our motorcycles and do all the things we love. We are Thankful for the friends we have met through GWRRA. These people have become our mentors, family and life long friends. What are you Thankful for this Thanksgiving? With that comes the annual camping trip at Wolf Creek Park. We hope to see as many of our friends there as possible even if you only come up for the day. Last year the camping trip was cancelled due to the weather. It looks like this year it is going to be cold but good! So get your warm blankets, coco, marshmallows and of course the firewood ready for some storytelling, singing, movie watching fun! We are also looking forward to the Christmas Party. It is on Dec. the 8 th at Bull Sallas Park. We will have lots of fun, food, and dancing. We will be doing a $25.00 gift exchange (gender specific) if you wish to participate. We will also be doing one round of dirty bingo so bring some gifts for that. So come on out and join us and dance the night away and celebrate Christmas with the chapter.

6 2018 Page 6 Chapter N2 - Humble, TX Rider Course Training Options Hey Texas Riders! One of the comments I often hear is that there are not enough rider training classes available to our GWR- RA membership. Although you can usually more readily find Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) or Evergreen Safety Council (ESC) courses in your area, they usually have a permanent range and paid instructors so their fee is MUCH higher than the standard GWRRA fee of $30-$35 per bike. If you are taking the course for the levels program, be sure to check with me on all non-gwrra courses before taking them to verify they will work. I have to admit that the logistics in setting up a rider training class can sometimes be a little daunting: Our first challenge is to identify a need. We ask members to let us know what you want. Courses currently offered by GWRRA include ARC Advanced Riding Course, TRC Trike Riding Course, TC Trailering Course (2 wheel), TTRC Trikes Trailering Course, and if there is a certified instructor, SRC Sidecar Rider Course and AORC Add-on Rider Course, You can tell your chapter director or ride coordinator or contact us directly at txed@gwrra-tx.org. Next, we try to find a location that is not too far from our riders a real challenge in this BIG state! We try to keep them centrally located to several chapters whenever possible. We have the highest concentration of chapters in the DFW, Houston, and Austin/San Antonio areas. When a chapter requests a course close to them, I ask the Chapter Team to locate an acceptable location that has both classroom space and a large area for the course (230 x126 for ARC and 200 x 120 for TRC). Once we have a prospective location, we have to certify the course is large enough, flat enough ( 5% grade), and free from obstructions in accordance with GWRRA guidelines. We must also register the location with the Texas Department of Public Safety motorcycle unit. Our next step is to schedule a date and find available instructors who volunteer their time and resources to put on the class. Most classes have a limit of 8 bikes per instructor. We currently only have 4 certified Rider Coaches in the entire state and one that will come from Oklahoma when he can. As you can understand, this limits our offerings too. If you are interested in becoming an instructor, I ed your CD information in early August to share on the next certification class (offered in Virginia next spring) or you can contact me and I ll forward you the information. Then we have to mark the course in a manner approved by the range provider. Most want only temporary markings. This necessitates several long tape measures, many cans of chalk paint, marker cones and dots, and 3-6 persons to mark the range. Finally, after the course is completed, all paperwork has to be returned to me where I file it with both DPS and GWRRA. Not interested in taking a Riding Course right now but still want to keep your skills sharp? A few months ago I wrote an article for your chapter newsletter on keeping your skills honed through parking lot practice activities. I also have another option for helping you receive basic training on a variety of riding topics through a series of free YouTube videos. They are produced by an MSF/Total Control certified instructor from the Dallas area named Kevin Morris. Although his knees prevent him from course instruction anymore, he still creates and releases a new video every Friday. I am impressed with the videos and refer to them often to help me refresh and retain my knowledge both on and off my bike. The link is user/kevinmorris22/videos. I hope you will find a way to increase your knowledge and refresh your skills on a regular basis. It will make you a better, safer rider and just might increase the years you still have to enjoy this sport of motorcycling. Ride Safely, Ride Often, and HEY! Be careful out there! 7 2018 Page 7 Chapter N2 - Humble, TX As the weather cools and the trees become bare, our thoughts turn to turkey and dressing. Yes, Thanksgiving is, as the name clearly states, a time to be thankful for all that we have. So as you sit at that table eating til you just can t eat anymore, don t forget to give thanks for the many treasures that make life worth living. I remember one year when our family was particularly thankful. As kind of a twisted New Year s resolution, we had decided to have an old fashioned Thanksgiving; the kind where you get a live turkey, pick the apples for the pie, carefully choose the pumpkin for yet another pie, and grow the veggies in the back yard. It was to be a year-long family project where everyone would work together to make a lasting memory. When spring came, so did the turkey chick, and with it, the need for a coop to keep our little Jake from running away. Supplies for the project cost a mere $150, and there were only two hospital trips needed (one for stitches when the chicken wire sprang loose -$750, and one for a broken bone due to a misplaced timber - $6500). We were all thankful that the little guy was so cute, thankful that the scar would not be too noticeable, and thankful for the walking cast, so that we were able to finish the job! Once the weather broke, we immediately started work on the garden. We would grow green beans, russet potatoes, sweet potatoes, & carrots. After many hours of internet research, we determined that the soil would need to be softened for the root veggies and a trellis would need to be constructed for the beans, so it was off to the garden shop for compost, peat, fertilizer, and a bright shiny rototiller ($565) to work the soil. As we finished planting the garden, we were thankful for the speedy response of the gas company when we hit that pipe, thankful the neighbor wasn t going to sue for the fence damage, and really thankful that we had a talented chiropractor! Over the next six months we worked diligently in the garden giving it all the spare time that was available after feeding and cleaning up after Jake several times a day. We were thankful that we were unable to afford a vacation that summer. As autumn devoured the landscape, we began planning for our apple picking excursion. As a child I remembered going down to the farms on the river where you could pick apples and pumpkins on the beautiful rolling hills. On the big day, we packed everyone into the van and headed for Route 8, only to find when we got there that all of the apple orchards had long since been turned into subdivisions; so we headed home. We were thankful for the beautiful river views that all of the folks now had from their back decks. Another week went by and we were able to find an apple orchard and pumpkin farm in central Ohio. We were thankful that gas was only $3.25 per gallon! After 165 miles in a crowded van, three bee stings, and a back spasm, we arrived home with ingredients for pie! We were thankful for air conditioning in the van, thankful for the epi-pen, and again, very thankful for a talented chiropractor. The meal itself took 3 days to prepare; one day for cleaning, cutting, and peeling the apples, cooking the pumpkin, and digging up the potatoes. We were thankful for emergency services and thankful that she still had 9 perfectly good other fingers. Another day was spent making pie crusts (it took 4 tries to get the dough right) and we were thankful for the old hoover to clean up the mess. The third day was spent on veggies. Jake was thankful that the family had fallen in love with him and had decided that turkey wasn t a necessity for the meal. In the end we had so much to be thankful for, but most all we were thankful that Thanksgiving was over! We hope your Thanksgiving is a memorable one! There is always, always, always something to be thankful for!

8 2018 Chapter N2 - Humble, TX Page 87 Billie & Steve Fleming Member Enhancement and Social Coordinators Do you have room in your friend basket? Friends Many of us have experienced the loss of a friend through one circumstance or another. We have had friends pass or move away a great distance limiting our contact with them. There are just some circumstances in life that cannot be avoided. Losing a close friend is a most disturbing life event that can influence the rest of our lives. I have never seen anyone fail to express regret at losing a close friend. What about those circumstances that can be avoided? Are we doing all we can to hold our friends close? During the course of a conversation with a friend recently, I made the remark, I don t know about anyone else but my friend basket is never full. I can always find room for another friend in my life. My friend said that is a great thought, you should use that in an article so now you have it. Let me expand on the thought. Life Has an Expiration Date None of us has the promise of tomorrow because as my wife says, life has an expiration date. We should take every opportunity to expand and enrich our relationships. This is a short life we live and there is no time better than the present to add to that list of friends we hold so dear. Through the years we have been associated with GWRRA we have made many friends in this great organization. GWRRA has been a vehicle for us to add to our friend basket on a regular basis. The more we have become involved, the more friends we seem to make. How can you beat that? We re having the time of our life and hope you can say the same. If we are not friends yet it may be because we haven t met you yet. Our hearts are open and hands extended. Want to be in our basket? We have plenty of room.

10 2018 Chapter N2 - Humble, TX Page 10 It's Time to Prepare for Dirty Bingo By Lynn Flournoy It ll be here before you know it. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here soon. And along with Christmas comes our very special N2 Christmas party. A fun part of that is Dirty Bingo. It s a great warm up to the gift swap and we all can sharpen our thievery skills. Look around for items that are new or gently used (but not for some time) and wrap them up for our game. Door prizes you didn't really want, bonus items that came with other purchases, even some of last year's Dirty Bingo prizes. Wrapping follows the Keep it Simple Rule: use gift wrap of any kind (Christmas, birthday, Easter, etc.); use the Sunday funnies or any other part of the newspaper. Please don t use ribbon or bows or other added decoration. Be sure to tape it securely as there will be some activity that could cause a less secure wrap to come lose. Box them if they are fragile or particularly small. It can get rough. One can use gift bags or even paper lunch bags but staple/tape them securely closed. Things get crazy for all of us this time of year but just keeping Dirty Bingo in the back of your mind will make this really pretty simple. I challenge everyone to participate by bringing a few goodies.
