3 5.1 Department of Environmental Health Presentation Documents TBD Background: Department of Environmental Health representative, Shelley Wallevand, will give a presentation on the Retail Tobacco Permitting Program and ask the Youth Commission for their participation. Voting Staff recommends that all Commissioners vote on a final decision to participate in the Retail Tobacco Permitting Program by creating committees within each council. These Committees will be created and used up to the discretion of each district s council.

4 5.2 Annual Retreat None Background: The Annual Retreat was held August 2, 2018 at the Mead Valley Community Center in Mead Valley. Kecia Harper-Ihem and Leonard Wittrock provided the Youth Commission with presentations. The primary focus of the Annual Retreat is to provide the opportunity for council members to learn basic leadership skills, interact with other council members, and identify relevant issues that the council and Commission will address during the year. Report Staff recommends that the ers report the observed strengths and weaknesses of the event, in order to provide recommendations for the 2019 Annual Retreat. Specific areas of interest include: food selection, length of event, activities, workshops, motivational speaker, etc.

5 Background: 5.3 Youth Advisory Council Goals None Each year all five district Youth Advisory Councils select goals that they will seek to achieve during the year. Based on the goals that each council selects, they will plan, coordinate and volunteer in a variety of events that seek to meet their council goals. At the end of each term year the council will report on their achievements in correlation to their council goals in the form of The Annual Report, which will be reviewed and filed by each County Supervisor s office. Report Staff recommends that each commissioner report their respective council goals for the term year. In addition, Staff recommends that each commissioner also discuss why the goals were chosen and how the council plans to achieve these goals throughout the year.

6 5.4 Youth in Government Day Save the Date Flyer Background: Youth in Government Day will be held on Thursday, October 18, Youth in Government Day was designed to educate students about county government, how it works, and the hundreds of career opportunities within local government. Students are paired up with county professionals (Department Directors and Elected Officials) in their field of interest and are able to share a day at work. First, Second, Third, and Fifth District will be meeting in Riverside, while Fourth District will be meeting in Indio. Discussion for event Staff recommends that the ers strongly encourage their council s participation in this mandatory event. Commissioners are also encouraged to remind council members that the must turn in a hard copy of the permission slip in order to participate in the event.

7 Background: 5.5 Officer Duties at Events None The holds 3 annual events. These events include the Youth Retreat, Youth in Government Day, and Youth Summit. The ers provide topics and ideas to which help to improve these annual events. Discussion Staff recommends that the ers discuss appropriate duties that will allow them to become more involved in annual events.
