1 SAFE Humanitarian Wrking Grup Mnthly Cnference Call Meeting Minutes: May 11, 2016 SAFE Wrking Grup Updates Welcme t new members Prject Gaia Prject Gaia prmtes clean ckstves that are pwered by alchl fuels fuels that are clean, safe, and efficient. We help cmmunities becme energy independent by establishing lcally-wned micrdistilleries. Gaia Assciatin The Gaia Assciatin is the Ethipian extensin f Prject Gaia. We mainly wrk with UNHCR n prviding ethanl and ethanl-fueled ckstves t refugees mainly Jijiga camp and (last year) in Assa. Happy: Des Gaia have any prjects in Nigeria? Alex: Yes, we are partnering with lcal il cmpanies t develp ethanl supply chains and jump start the clean cking market there. IASC Reference Grup Status Recap fr new members: The SAFE WG is applying t the UN Interagency Standing Cmmittee (IASC) t becme a frmal Reference Grup fr the crdinatin f energy-related assistance humanitarian crises, similar t the existing reference grups fr prtectin and gender. This wuld make energy a frmal part f the UN humanitarian system. There have been delays in this prcess, but we are still pushing n it, and the IASC has put us back n the agenda. Their preference is fr us t jin with the Jint UNEP/OCHA Envirnment Unit (JEU) t frm a single Reference Grup cvering bth Energy and Envirnment. The IASC will hst a meeting in Octber where the SAFE WG and the JEU will share ur jint wrk plans. Events Wmen Deliver, May 16-17, Cpenhagen Wmen Deliver is a gender cnference in Cpenhagen. It usually fcuses n wmen s health, but nw it is branching ut t tpics that include the Sustainable Develpment Gals (SDGs). The Alliance is attending t talk abut energy and gender; we will hst a side event and a bth. The UN Fundatin bard meeting will als take place in Cpenhagen at the same time, which includes Alliance Executive Directr Radha Muthiah and UNF s President Kathy Calvin. 2 Wrld Humanitarian Summit (WHS), May 23-24, Istanbul Cmmunicatins update frm the Alliance (Kathleen) Reminder t prvide the Talking Pints we sent arund previusly t any delegates yu may knw wh are attending the Summit. They are in direct respnse t the themes f the High Level Leaders Rundtables and Special Sessins, and explain hw and why energy is relevant in these cntexts. Bth the SAFE Wrking Grup and the Alliance will have bths at the Summit, at the Exhibitin Fair and Innvatin Marketplace respectively. We are lking fr vlunteers t help staff the SAFE bth, as well as any cking, lighting, r pwering prducts t display. The SAFE Side Event, Why Energy Matters will take place 1:00-2:30 pm n Tuesday. UNF will hst a private sectr breakfast n Tuesday mrning. UNHCR s Innvatin Team and +Scial Gd are hsting a Ggle Hangut tmrrw n (May 12) with the SAFE Wrking Grup C-Chairs (Crinne, Daphne, and Andreas) and Paul McCallin frm UNHCR, fcusing n energy access and energy pverty in advance f WHS. The panel will be mderated by Virginie Viaene at UNHCR. The ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment (HAS), June 17-19, Geneva HAS prvides an pprtunity fr UN Member States t address challenges and peratinal and nrmative prgress n the humanitarian plicy agenda. This year s is fcused n "the future f humanitarian affairs: twards greater inclusiveness, crdinatin, interperability and effectiveness." It will include a high-level interactive panel, a number f side event, and an infrmal event n the transitin frm relief t develpment. Mnthly year prductin is abut 300 ckstves Martha Thmpsn and Amy Smith frm D-Lab (MIT, Bstn) Amy: D-Lab is currently wrking n Rethink Relief, which brings tgether engineers, designers, NGO wrkers, students and refugees t c-design and c-prduce prttypes f tls and technlgies based n prblems that refugees identify. We have wanted t develp this wrk in refugee camps. We have a yearly summit, mst recently in Padere, N. Uganda. D-Lab has recently received a Humanitarian Innvatin Fund (HIF) grant t d innvatin wrk arund GBV, and we are interested in incrprating the energy cmpnent. Fcusing n ckstves and lighting (equally), and livelihd energy-t-pwer technlgies. Als alternative cking fuels, as well as agriculture waste based charcal. Mtrcycle as a mechanism fr pwering agricultural activities wide range f pprtunities. During the initial phase, we re fcusing in these specific areas but we are pen t ther areas and D-lab des have several prjects in West Africa. 5 In partnership with the Gvernment f Canada, the Alliance is designing a cmprehensive, csted natinal five-year integrated clean cking prgram in Haiti. Tward this gal, the Alliance will wrk with key gvernment ministries, in-cuntry partners, influential Haitian stakehlders, lcal champins, dnrs, manufacturers, nn-gvernmental rganizatins, wmen's grups, investrs and ther cunterparts. Katherine Arnld is transitining nt the Haiti prject fr at least the next 6 mnths, s Kathleen will take ver crdinatin f the SAFE WG and related activities. Prject Gaia N particular updates. We will be attending WHS and the Carbn Summit in Clgne later that week. Gaia Assciatin n updates Fd and Agriculture Organizatin (FAO) FAO is finalizing technical handbk n assessing fd fuel supply and demand in displacement settings; this has been delayed. Guidance nte n SAFE linked t the framewrk fr actin n fd security in prtracted crises. It cntains a CSF-endrsed set f principles (fits with sustainable develpment n GBV) GIZ Anja will finalize a factsheet n energy and humanitarian settings frm the pint f view f GIZ and share it with the grup.
