1 THE NEW YORK BAR FOUNDATION 2018 ANTITRUST SECTION LAW STUDENT FELLOWSHIP The New Yrk Bar Fundatin is pleased t annunce the 2018 Antitrust Sectin Law Student Fellwship, which has been established by the Fundatin thrugh gifts frm the Antitrust Sectin f the New Yrk State Bar Assciatin. The Fellwship will be awarded t up t fur current first r secnd year law students t wrk n antitrust and related matters in the public sectr in the State f New Yrk during the Summer f Abut Antitrust Law Antitrust laws prhibit business practices that deprive cnsumers f the benefits f cmpetitin, including cnduct that may result in higher prices fr prducts r harm cnsumers by discuraging innvatin r depriving them f greater chices. Antitrust laws can be enfrced thrugh criminal r civil investigatins and cases. Federal and state antitrust agencies have authrity t enfrce antitrust laws in the U.S. In additin, there are many ther cuntries with antitrust/cmpetitin laws. Antitrust investigatins ften invlve cnsideratin f ecnmic relatinships amng cmpanies and ther participants in an industry and verall market dynamics. Fellwship Prgram Gals Prvide law students an pprtunity t experience antitrust and gvernment investigatins practice during the summer after their first r secnd year f law schl and t increase the representatin f lawyers frm a diverse range f backgrunds in the practice f antitrust law in New Yrk. The ultimate gal f the Fellwship is t frge relatinships amng antitrust practitiners thrughut the State f New Yrk and fster greater diversity in the antitrust bar. Thrugh the Fellwship, a student will be prvided a meaningful and apprpriately supervised wrk experience in the New Yrk Office f New Yrk Attrney General, Antitrust Bureau; the Federal Trade Cmmissin, Nrtheast Regin; r the Department f Justice Antitrust Divisin, New Yrk Office.

2 The Fellwship 1. Up t fur (4) Fellwships, each currently valued at $6,000, will be awarded t students t spend the summer f 2018 (10 weeks) wrking n antitrust matters in ne f the fllwing agencies: the New Yrk Office f New Yrk Attrney General, Antitrust Bureau; Federal Trade Cmmissin, Nrtheast Regin; r Department f Justice Antitrust Divisin, New Yrk Office. Prf f U.S. citizenship may be required fr emplyment with federal law enfrcement agencies. 2. The Fellws will be guest members f the NYSBA Antitrust Sectin fr tw years starting with the award f the Fellwship. 3. The Fellws will be invited t attend Executive Cmmittee meetings f the NYSBA Antitrust Sectin during the Summer and Fall f The Fellws will be annunced n later than February 28, Eligibility The Fellwship is pen t all first-year (1L) and secnd-year (2L) students (as f the Fall 2017 semester) wh are capable f fulfilling the requested wrk hurs and respnsibilities and meet the criteria under the heading Judging belw. Fellwship Length The Fellwship will take place during the summer f 2018 fr a perid f 10 weeks, between June and August 2018; the precise dates will be prvided when the fellwship is awarded. The expected wrk requirement per week generally will be 35 t 40 hurs. Lcatin f Fellwship The 2018 Fellwship will take place in ne f the fllwing agencies: the New Yrk Office f New Yrk Attrney General, Antitrust Bureau; Federal Trade Cmmissin, Nrtheast Regin; r Department f Justice Antitrust Divisin, New Yrk Office. Fellwship finalists will be interviewed in New Yrk City in early Payment f Fellwship Each Fellw will receive $3,000 at the start f the Fellwship with the remaining $3,000 paid t each Fellw at the end f the Fellwship (n federal r state incme taxes will be withheld and a 1099 will be issued t the student by January 31, 2019). 2

3 Husing and Other Expenses Husing, transprtatin and all ther expenses t participate in the Fellwship will be prvided by the student. Finalists csts f ut f twn travel t participate in interviews in New Yrk City may be reimbursed. Fellwship Applicatin Requirements The applicant must submit the fllwing: 1. A cmpleted applicatin (applicatin frm belw) 2. Cver letter f interest 3. Unfficial law schl transcript (if available) 4. Unfficial undergraduate schl transcript 5. Resume 6. Tw letters f recmmendatin 7. One writing sample n any tpic related t the law. The writing sample must be at least five pages but shall nt exceed 10 typed pages dublespaced. 7 Abut the Antitrust Sectin f the New Yrk Bar Assciatin The Antitrust Law sectin prvides a frum in which attrneys and law students can learn abut and keep up with develpments in cmpetitin law and cmplex litigatin generally. The sectin cvers nt nly U.S. natinal develpments, but als internatinal activity and New Yrk State antitrust enfrcement. Sectin activities include (1) mnthly meetings f the grup s Executive Cmmittee, (2) an annual day-lng prgram and series f evening events, held each January in cnjunctin with the New Yrk State Bar Assciatin s annual meeting, and (3) special prgrams in the mid-summer and fall. The Sectin als has six standing subcmmittees, which fcus n (1) diversity in the Sectin, (2) cartel and criminal practice, (3) class actins, (4) crdinated cnduct (5) mergers, and (6) unilateral cnduct. The subcmmittees similarly hld regular meetings, special prgrams and brwnbag discussins. Annual Meeting Events: The Sectin s annual meeting events cnsist f tpical panels, presented during the day, fllwed by a receptin, dinner and dessert buffet in the evening. The evening events are attended by rughly 350 persns, and the day events by abut 100. Fr the 2018 annual meeting, the Sectin has invited as the featured dinner speaker Makan Delrahim, Assistant Attrney General, United States Department f Justice, Antitrust Divisin. Other Sectin Activities: The Executive Cmmittee s mnthly meetings handle regular business, fllwed by a ne-hur speaker s presentatin. These mnthly prgrams cver a wide-range f subjects, which recently have included the Secnd Circuit s recent decisin in U.S. v. American Express; the reslutin f the Apple E-Bks litigatin; antitrust implicatins f institutinal investrs hlding psitins in multiple cmpetitrs in the same industry; and ther tpics. Any Sectin member may attend these prgrams, either in persn r by phne dial-in. Sme f these prgrams ffer CLE credit at n charge. The Sectin als spnsrs a Summer merger prgram and a Fall prgram n varying tpics, and peridically c-spnsrs special prgrams. The prgrams are pen t Sectin members and nn-members alike. The Sectin als spnsrs a yearly writing cmpetitin pen t students at law schls lcated in New Yrk, and t New Yrk state residents in law schls utside the State. The student whse paper is selected as the winning entry receives a $5000 award. 3
