1 BCYCNA CN Community Scholarship Winners Kwantlen Polytechnic University University of Victoria Professional Writing Katrina Pedersen Katrina Pedersen has been attending Kwantlen Polytechnic University for 3 years and is currently in her second year in the Degree program. She loves how journalism allows reporters to inform the public on important news stories, while highlighting a high standard of storytelling. Her career goal is to work for a newspaper and perfect the art of multimedia storytelling. Jaclyn Sinclair Jaclyn is in her third year of a Bachelor of Arts in and Communications at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. She has particularly enjoyed multimedia storytelling and photojournalism. She looks forward to working more with audio and visual journalism in the future. When she has completed her program, Jaclyn hopes to work as a freelance journalist and storyteller. Estefania Wujkiw Estefania Wujkiw is in the program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, where she contributes to the school s newspaper. In February, she was selected to take part in The Vancouver Sun s coverage of the 2013 B.C. Election. She is looking forward to a career focused on culture and entertainment. Vanessa Annand When she is not with her life-sized ceramic cats (Pierre Mewdeau and Kim Cattrall), Vanessa Annand is at the University of Victoria. She is the editor of UVic s independent newspaper, the Martlet, and is graduating with a BFA in creative non-fiction and professional writing. Though she would like to cover polo for Equestrio magazine in Dubai, she would also blithely work in a three-person newsroom in small-town Canada. Thompson Rivers University Samantha Garvey Samantha joined TRU s journalism program and immersed herself in the industry, including webcasting TRU Wolfpack varsity games, programming CFBX campus radio and reporting for The Omega and Terrace Standard newspapers. She is now working as a casual producer at the CBC Radio One Kamloops bureau and completing a documentary film. Although radio was her first love, after her second internship at a community newspaper, she fell for papers, describing them as the ground floor of covering the news, and the «pulse» of the town. Sarah MacMillan Sarah MacMillan is currently a fourthyear student at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops B.C. She is also an intern at the local newspaper and an alumni member of Phi Theta Kappa, an honour society for two-year colleges. Sarah is looking forward to graduation this spring of 2013, excited to see where her degree will take her. Devan C. Tasa Coming from Prince George, B.C., Devan C. Tasa is in his final year of journalism at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. Before he started his two-year-long journalism degree, he took a political science and international studies joint major at the University of Northern British Columbia. In the future, Tasa would like to work at a newspaper, with a beat that allows him to focus on municipal, provincial and federal politics, as well as labour issues. Lukas Bhandar Lukas Bhandar is in his second year in the Writing program at the University of Victoria. He has been published in several local publications including the Martlet student newspaper and the Torch Alumni Magazine, and aims to expand his portfolio in the coming years. He hopes to eventually work both domestically and internationally with a focus on LGBT issues MA MURRAY COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER AWARDS PRESENTED BY COAST CAPITAL SAVINGS APRIL 20, 2013

2 BCYCNA CN Community Scholarship Winners Langara College Deanna Cheng Working as a freelance writer for the Renfrew-Collingwood community newspaper, I discovered many little stories about my neighbourhood that I doubt any big newspaper would pay attention to. Community newspapers cover relevant issues that directly affect their readers, lending a sense of connection. Deanna is currently a Langara journalism student and will graduate in So far, she has written for WestEnder, Renfrew- Collingwood Community newspaper and the Voice at Langara College. She has also contributed to the Karate BC newsletter. Vancouver Island University Creative Writing and Katja de Bock Community newspapers and websites have the privilege and the duty to tell people s stories, localize global issues, and inform the public so they can make the right decisions. My family and I are hoping to move to a smaller town and I look forward to the opportunity to work as a local journalist. Katja started her career in the German film and TV industry, brought that experience to Canada, and is now enrolled at Langara College to get hands-on experience with modern media tools. She has been doing an energetic job of covering her south Vancouver community as part of her time at the college. Jules Knox Community news has the ability to convey the essence and passions of a town. When I graduate, I hope to work in a community up north. I love the dynamic nature of politics within small towns. Jules Knox finished her bachelor of commerce degree at the University of British Columbia before spending almost four years travelling around the world. Upon her return to Canada, she enrolled in the certificate program at Langara College. Sascha Porteous The news that community journalists report keeps people connected, safe and educated. Sascha Porteous studied photography at North Island College in After travelling the world for a few years he decided to pursue a career in journalism. He has just completed his journalism diploma at Langara College, and believes that his training in photography is a perfect match to accompany his writing. Sascha hopes to start his career at a community newspaper in British Columbia. Meagan Dyer Meagan has always aspired to a career in journalism. Growing up in the small community of Port Hardy, she began writing at the high school level for The Wailer before pursuing a Creative Writing and degree at Vancouver Island University. She is currently the Sports Editor of the Navigator newspaper and hopes to continue following her passion of community news. Our tracks lead to a greener future. For everyone. Protecting the environment for our children s future is a concern we all share. And, as the most environment-friendly mode of ground freight transportation, we take this responsibility seriously MA MURRAY COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER AWARDS PRESENTED BY COAST CAPITAL SAVINGS APRIL 20,
