1 Wyandanch Public Library Serving the community for 39 years Holiday Edition Message from the Director January/February 2014 Newsletter What s Inside: Happy New Year! As I am sure many of you did over the holidays, I too spent time reflecting on 2013, wondering how it passed so quickly, and evaluating accomplishments while moving items still undone to the 2014 list of things to do. While going through this exercise, I decided to take just a moment to thank and acknowledge library staff for their service and the Library Board members for their service, their wealth of knowledge, community engagement, and commitment to the Wyandanch Public Library was a year filled with success and positive achievements. We are looking forward to an exciting In addition to our regular programs and activities we offer; we are busy planning special series on money, health and real estate and genecology to name a few; also notable guest speakers. In 2014 we will also be starting the construction of the mezzanine. Thanks to your continued support, the Wyandanch Public Library is continuing to grow and change for the better. We ll read Jesse Owens: Fastest Man Alive by Carole Boston Weatherford. Afterwards, we ll make a craft celebrating Jackie Robinson. Wednesday, February 19th at. Let s Learn About the Harlem Renaissance Join Ms. Rebecca and take a look at the different fashion trends that were popular in the 1920 s and 1930 s in Harlem. We ll make a paper hat craft. Wednesday, February 26th at. The program is led by Early Literacy Coordinator, LaFlorence Grant;. She is trained in the new school curriculum Common Core. Early Literacy helps parents understand their child s studies and reinforces children s learning from the classroom. Children gain knowledge through various computer developmental applications, aiding in their success in school. Advisory Board We discuss teen issues, develop new ideas for teen programs and ideas for community service initiatives. Participate in fun activities. Every Wednesday at -Join the Drama every Thursday for an evening of improvisations, skits, theatre games and dance. Every Thursday at Video Game Tournament On the first Thursday of the month. Join us in the Diggs-Simpson Auditorium for a Teen Video Game Tournament. Compete against local teens to become WPL Video Game Champ and win cool prizes. January 2nd & February 6th, 5:30 pm When Should I Tell?-Join us for an interactive workshop sponsored by Parents of Meagan s Law and the Crimes Victim Center that teaches children how to trust their instincts and what to do in uncomfortable situations. Children will learn steps they can take to protect themselves and feel empowered. Wednesday, January 8th Empowered Voices Scarf Design and create your own stylish, wearable scarf using words and images commemorating Black History Month. Thursday, January 9th,. Social Etiquette with Edna Perkins Teens will have learning dining etiquette and table manners while enjoying light refreshments. Wednesday, January 15th & Thursday, February 6th,. Teen Movie: Lee Daniels: The Butler- As Cecil Gaines serves eight presidents during his tenure as a butler at the White House, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, and other major events affect this man's life, family, and American society. Refreshments will be served. Wednesday, February 5th, Valentine Origami Create interesting and unusual valentines using the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. Thursday, February 6th,. Hate Crime Prevention Teens will learn about prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping and the seriousness of Hate Crime and how it affects victims and communities. Wednesday, February 12th, Chocolate Krispies Join the Baking Coach to make a special Valentine s Day treat to enjoy or give to a friend or family member. Friday, February 14th, 3:30 pm-. February Winter Craft Join Ms. Erica for this DIY project, suing magnets, paper, glue, materials for design and clear marbles. We will make personalized magnets for you or anyone you wish to gift them to. They can be done with any design, theme, or style. Tuesday, February 18th, 4:00 pm-5:30 pm. Cataplults, Trebuchets, Ballistas. Oh My!- Join Ms. Erica for a lesson on applied physics, force, velocity, and mechanics. To further enhance the lesson each teen will build a catapult as well as learn fun facts about history surrounding these machines. Tuesday, February 25th, 4:00 pm-5:30 pm. Underground Railroad Quilt Learn about the history and lore of the Underground Railroad while creating quilt blocks which we will join together to create an Underground Railroad Quilt. Using footage shot during the marches and narrated by Peter Jennings, the video montage provides a strong setting for the showing of the I Have a Dream speech at the foot of the Lincoln Monument. Coll as he presents this program that reflects on the deadly conflict regarding the legal and political struggle towards the abolition of slavery. 7 Page 7 WYANDANCH PUBLIC LIBRARY Celebrates Black History Month Private Sarah Keys-Evans: In 1951, while traveling home on furlough from the Army, Pvt. Keys was asked to give up her seat for a white marine. She refused and was arrested. She challenged the law which resulted in the outlawing of segregation in interstate bus travel. Wyandanch Public Library will have the honor of Mrs. Keys-Evans visit the library to celebrate Black History Month with the community. Date and Time to be announced.
