13 PROCLAMATION Whereas, Whereas, Whereas, Whereas, Whereas, Whereas, Whereas, Whereas, Mrs. Marjory Kent Vickery is celebrating her 90 th Birthday this year and we wish to celebrate the long and very full life of Mrs. Vickery; and Mrs. Vickery and her late husband Paul served and supported many organizations that made their community a better place to live and work; and In 1971, Mrs. Vickery was the first woman elected to the Lewisville Independent School District School Board, with the goal of providing safety for our children as they walked to school. I ve always said you don t run on a gripe, Vickery explained. No one can be successful focused on the negative, focused on their complaints. To be effective you need a positive idea, something you can do for the organization ; and Our kids are still benefitting from the measures Mrs. Vickery lobbied for, including sidewalks, school crossing guards, school zones and a pedestrian bridge for kids whose walk required them to cross the highway; and In 1976 Mrs. Vickery left the LISD School Board and was elected to the Texas State Board of Education where she served until She was the first Republican woman elected to the SBOE and the first Denton County Republican to win any statewide office in Texas; and As SBOE Co-Chairman of the Curriculum Committee Mrs. Vickery traveled around the State gathering input regarding school curriculum for Texas children, particularly bilingual education, which was later introduced to LISD and other school districts; and Mrs. Vickery has received many awards but the most visible symbol of her legacy to students in LISD is the Marjory Vickery Elementary School that opened its doors in 2003; and Mrs. Vickery and her late husband Paul are the proud parents of five children who wish to honor their mother by hosting a reception for her 90 th Birthday on July 9, Now Therefore, the Denton County Commissioners Court Proclaims Saturday, July 9, 2016 as Marjory Kent Vickery Day in Denton County and encourages all Denton County residents to congratulate her on her 90 th Birthday Celebration as she continues to advocate for our students as well as the community.
