1 COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA LEGISLATIVE JOURNAL MONDAY, JANUARY 14, 2013 SESSION OF TH OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY No. 2 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES The House convened at 1 p.m., e.s.t. THE SPEAKER (SAMUEL H. SMITH) PRESIDING PRAYER HON. MATTHEW E. BAKER, member of the House of Representatives, offered the following prayer: Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Welcome back, everyone. Abraham Lincoln said, "It is the duty of nations to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord." Let us pray together. Lord, Your wisdom is the key to blessing. Today, the beginning of our 2-year session, we ask for Your wisdom to rain down from heaven upon all our leaders and staff. We ask that they experience You in a very real and supernatural way. May they be filled with Your spirit of knowledge, wisdom, and a thirst for righteousness, justice, faith, hope, and love especially love. Grant them the strength and courage needed to lead our great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and its citizens according to Your will and purpose that is reflective of divine law and moral tenets. Lord, renew a right spirit within us so that we may work together to find common ground so that whatever we say and do is pleasing in Your sight. O that we may be Your faithful and obedient servants to do the work of Your hands, that we may keep Your name holy, and give to You the honor and glory for all things. Hallowed be Your name, Lord. Enable us to use whatever gifts we have received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms, so that in all that we do, God may be praised and exalted in our lives by being good and faithful servants. Thank You for the awesome opportunity to serve both You and others, Lord. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE (The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by members and visitors.) MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR VICTIMS OF SANDY HOOK TRAGEDY The SPEAKER. Although we were here on January 1 for swearing-in day, I did want to just take a moment, because I think a tragedy of this magnitude warrants a moment of silence on our behalf. It has been a month since the tragedy in Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and while it rings a variety of emotions and concerns, I think at this moment in time that it is befitting for us as the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to mark on the record a moment of silence and prayer for the families and victims of that tragic event. Members and all guests will please rise in a moment of silence. (A moment of silence was observed.) The SPEAKER. Thank you.
