1 Semaphore From the Helm October N, W Volume # 38 Number 10 The building renovation is moving forward, surveying is completed, architectural drawings and the permitting process will follow soon, and demolition and construction should start before the end of the year. The Finance Committee has developed a plan to obtain funding for the construction. The efforts of the Building and Finance Committees are appreciated and their efforts, as well as all those of the volunteers that make this club run smoothly, really make Seaford Yacht Club special. The Board of Trustees has voted to appeal the Hyatt decision oyster lease and Bill Jones, Chad Green, Malcolm Burgess, and Helmut Walters have all stepped up to make it possible. Bill and Chad have raised over $ 3,500 for attorney fees from the local community. Malcolm has written the appeal, and Chad has given it his blessing. Fund raising is continuing so, hopefully, the club will not bear much of the legal fees involved. I d also like to thank some of the residents of Dandy for their contributions. I'm still looking for a Semaphore editor as Nancy Mehegan will be stepping down. I need to find a replacement soon. Just think, you ll get to see the newsletter before everyone else! Thanks, Nancy, for all your efforts over the years. The Labor Day Cruise was a huge success. Thanks Dana. There are so many people that volunteer to make this club the best on the bay, and I don t always get the chance to thank them all. I hope you all realize your efforts are appreciated. Dan Smoker on Smoke won 1st place, Chuck Eldred on Gail Force was 2nd, and Tom Feldhaus on E Z Daze was 3rd, followed by Jim Blotter on Wind Swept. Ben Hugins on Horizons did not finish. Our thanks to the race committee--richard Gay and Mike Webb on Incision. Upcoming: Oyster Roast Race, October 20 The Oyster Roast Race is approaching quickly. The Oyster Roast Race usually has ideal racing conditions and SYC normally has a good turnout of racers. Please join the club for the Oyster Roast Saturday night after the race. 3 DINNER MEETINGS September Road Kill Dinner hosts Art Dister and Tom Feldhaus and crew put together a bleu ribbon dinner for their annual Road Kill meal. It seems the chicken ran into the pig on the road and resulted in a chicken cordon bleu entrée. A delicious meal was served--broccoli with cheese sauce, corn-on-the-cob, and apple pastry with ice cream for dessert. Music by The Hard Traveling Band provided a festive evening and the opportunity for dancing as well. The Road kill crew included Art Dister, Tom Feldhaus, Justin Kelly, Dan Smoker, Jimmy Jones, Greg Choney, Cecil Adcox, Bob Strieter, John Leist, Bill Heath, Ken Nitchie, Ty Walinski, Tom Sadick, Pete Showalter, and Bruce Pettyjohn. A special thank you to Gladys Wagner for filling in for Donna Gilroy. We hope Donna will be well and resuming the reservation and collection duties by next month. The Hard Traveling Band plays music while Art and Cindy Dister dance and prospective member, Tempy Barbiu, sings. October Mama Mia October is the annual Italian night hosted by Alita and Bill Small with co-hosts, Nancy and Barry Shrout and Gail and Chuck Eldred. 5 SYC BOT MEETING SUMMARY SEPTEMBER 11,2018 Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. Members Present: Carl Early, Cecil Adcox, Fran Butterfoss, Jandy Strickland, Bill Edmonds, Janet Beilhart, Pete Showalter. Members Absent: David Coffield, Ben Huggin, Tina MacRitchie, Sandy Shem, Winnie Feldhaus. Secretary s Report The minutes of the May 8 meeting, previously distributed, were approved. Vote to accept: Unanimous Treasurer s Report Detailed monthly financial reports were presented to the BOT and are available on the members only portion of the SYC web site. Vote to accept: Unanimous Jandy reviewed the midyear income and expenses against the budget. The finances seem to be on track. Old Business Building Committee Report Randy reported that the Building Committee met with the civil engineer from VHB (doing the site plan), Ritchie-Curbow (general contractor), and Hopke & Assoc. (architect) on Aug. 27. The wetlands have been marked and York County is scheduled to verify on Sept. 13 (weather permitting). Water and electric utilities need to be marked by SYC prior to the site survey. After site survey by VHB, Hopke & Assoc. will have the building layout drawing to VHB in 3 weeks. The site plan will be ready for submission to the County by Oct. 1. To allow for the building design to begin, a partial contract for the design portion only is being negotiated. The Building Committee will review several concept drawings and choose one to proceed with as the final design. The Building Committee will present the design to the BOT and hold a townhall meeting for SYC members. After the concept drawings have been approved by the Club, the Finance Committee will move forward with obtaining funding, and the Building Committee will negotiate the construction portion of the contract. Full Building Committee report is available on the SYC website. Jim Hughes has resigned from the Building Committee and Sandy Hopkins has been selected to replace him. Back Creek Oyster Permits Two of the three permits were denied. The BOT discussed protesting the approved permit for the Thoroughfare. Malcolm will be asked to investigate how SYC could piggyback on NOAA Fisheries Service s plan to protest the permit. 5

6 New Business: Junior Sailing The BOT thanked the Disters, Hutters, and Butterfosses who donated scholarship funds to the Boys and Girls Club to send five kids to our Junior Sailing Program. Hurricane Readiness Members of the Club pulled together to get the property ready for the coming storm, although there was not an official alert received. Semaphore Search is on for a new Semaphore editor. Nancy will put out an blast and Carl will announce the vacancy at the Sept. Dinner Meeting. Clubhouse Rentals It was moved that no new SYC rentals would be accepted until the construction was finished and a Certificate of Occupancy is issued. Vote to accept: Unanimous New Member Application The Walinski membership was approved one vote taken by phone. Bill Edmonds reported that they exchanged burgees with the Kenosha Yacht Club on their trip to Wisconsin. Action Items: Carl will contact Malcolm to investigate protesting the Oyster Bed Lease. Nancy will send out request and Carl will make a dinner meeting announcement for Semaphore editor replacement. 7 LANDSCAPING WOW! Our gardens and grounds looked amazingly beautiful in the Spring and the Summer! Thanks for the unseen maintenance you continue to give!!!!!!!!!! Please check your garden area to see if maintenance is needed and proceed to give TLC. You select when this is convenient for your schedule. Fall Clean-Up is scheduled for November 3, Saturday, 9 a.m. All members are welcome to assist with Fall Clean up. Bring your rakes and gloves, etc., to experience a Fall Day of making your special place even more special! Be sure to sign in to let us know that you are on the grounds and also indicate if you are staying for LUNCH provided by Commodore Carl Early. Thanks for all you are doing to make Seaford Yacht Club s Landscape more enjoyable for all members. Mulch will be available if needed. If you have bulbs or other plants that need to be planted in the fall, please be sure to give Jandy Strickland, Treasurer, the receipt and let me know as we still have a small amount in our budget. Barbara Georgianna, Landscaping Chair KYC MEETS SYC During a recent trip to Kenosha, WI, Joan and Bill Edmonds visited the Kenosha Yacht Club and exchanged burgees with Commodore Bob Reinhart and his wife, Joyce. They enjoyed several hours together while sharing sailing and yacht club stories. The Kenosha Yacht Club is similar in size to the SYC and has been in existence for about 80 years. It is located on the waterfront at Lake Michigan a lovely club if you ever get the chance to visit. Bill presented the KYC burgee to Commodore Carl Early at the September dinner meeting. Bill Edmonds give KYC burgee to Carl Early. Joan and Bill Edmonds trade burgees with Commodore Bob Reinhart and his wife, Joyce. 7
