1 GADSDEN CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION BUDGET HEARING #2 AND REGULAR MEETING TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, :00 P.M. AT BOARD OF EDUCATION CENTRAL OFFICE RECOGNITION OF GUESTS/AWARDS President Cochran recognized the Titan Ambassadors who were present at the meeting and thanked them for all they do along with their sponsor, Mrs. Kim Back. Also recognized were Mr.Wardric Griffin and Ms. Karen Parker of Quality of Life. Ms. Parker announced that the new Quality of Life School Based Health Facility is almost completed and an open house for the facility is scheduled for the second week of October and more information will be forthcoming. Newly elected City Council member, Mr. Thomas Worthy, was also recognized and welcomed to the meeting. Superintendent Miller and President Cochran also recognized Mr. Lanny Lancaster and presented him with a plaque for his years of tireless service to Gadsden City Schools as the AEA UniServ District 9 Director and as a teacher. Mr. Lancaster will retire at the end of September, Superintendent Miller presented to Board members Certificates of Achievement for attaining certain levels of continuing education hours. Ms. Lynn Taylor was presented with the Level 1 certificate. The Level 2 certificate was presented to Mrs. Kelly Cochran. Ms. Deborah Howard was presented with certificates for Level 2 and Level 3. Mr. Mike Haney was awarded a certificate for attaining Level 3. Mr. Ralph Lane was recognized for attaining the Master s Level award for 100 continued education hours and will receive a plaque at the Annual meeting of Alabama Association of School Boards in December. Superintendent Miller, assisted by Mr. Joe Ransaw, presented the School Board Member Academy President s Award plaque to the Gadsden City Board of Education. This award is for the entire school board completing 60 hours of continuing education training during the past year. The award was presented to only 37 or 38 school systems in the state of Alabama. REPORTS Student Enrollment

2 Superintendent Miller reported on the enrollment count as of September 9, The number of elementary students enrolled for the 23 rd day of school is 2,634. This number includes 45 pre-k students. The number of secondary students enrolled is 2,798. This number is down 70 students from the school year. Superintendent Miller noted as the City of Gadsden s population is declining, so will the schools population decline. Career Tech Dr. David Asbury gave the career tech report. He reported that career tech classes are continuing to grow. He reported on the new CADD class which is in its first year at the high school. Gadsden City Schools received a grant last year to purchase equipment with the instructor to be provided through Gadsden State for the program. The equipment has now been purchased and put in place with a 16 station lab. The lab also has a 3D printer/fabricator. Dr. Asbury showed the Board a wrench which was produced by the 3D printer. Through the dual enrollment with Gadsden State, there is no tuition and the students receive high school credit as well as college credit for the program. He also told the Board that a little later in the year, after the students get their feet wet, he will bring something to show that the students have designed. Superintendent Miller noted that this great program is another shining star for Gadsden City Schools. Pep Grant Mr. Hector Baeza reported on the Carol White/PEP (Physical Education Program) grant recently received through the U. S. Department of Education. The grant is for three years for a total of $795, The schools participating in the grant are Litchfield Middle, Adams Elementary, and Donehoo Elementary, as well as the Gadsden City Schools Child Nutrition Program. Teacher Recruitment Report Mr. Larry Weathers gave the teacher recruitment report. He visited four colleges recently to develop a relationship with each college for teacher recruitment. He visited Alabama State, Talladega College, Miles College, and Stillman College to meet a contact person from each school. Mr. Ralph Lane also suggested contacting the Chamber of Commerce for brochures and materials to take to the colleges in order to sell the City to the potential teaching candidates. Mr. Weathers will speak to the pre-graduation class at Alabama State in December assisted by Dr. Cynthia Toles. Superintendent Miller commented that we are going to be more aggressive in selling our city and our school system to these students who are potential teaching candidates. Homecoming Report Ms. Elizabeth Haney gave the homecoming report. Ms. Haney is an attorney in Gadsden and also the parent of a cheerleader at Gadsden City High School. Ms. Haney

3 reported that she had met with the Chamber of Commerce and they are in the preplanning stages for homecoming activities. She said the Chamber has some great ideas for homecoming and the downtown businesses are excited about participating in the activities for homecoming this year. There will be a window decorating contest for the students in the elementary and middle schools and the Chamber of Commerce will provide the necessary materials for the contest. The activities for homecoming are going to have a First Friday feel with Broad Street being blocked off a little longer after the parade in order for everyone to visit the downtown shops. She also reported that after the homecoming parade, they would like to have a city-wide pep rally. The Chamber of Commerce will make spirit purchases for businesses to give away at the event. Ms. Haney said everything is still in the planning stages, but wanted everyone to be aware of what will be taking place for homecoming activities in order to have all of Broad Street Titaned Up for the event.
