3 From The Freight Shed Bob Verkuyl, Superintendent clinic about the construction and operation of the layout. In order to help in this effort, please take photos of all the various components of the layout while they are being assembled. In this age of digital photography there is no expense in having too many photos and who knows how they might be used in the future. Make sure that the date of the annual picnic is on your calendar: Saturday, July 23rd. All of the information is on page 1 and page 6. Once again it will be with the Lakeshores Division and will take place at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers in Marengo. Train rides will be given from 10 to 4 around their extensive track, and we may get lucky and see some actual live steam locomotives in operation. It s exciting to report the progress of the Division s display layout, now known as The Port of Oswego everything is moving ahead very nicely. At the time of this writing, materials for the base have been donated or purchased, and have been cut to size, ready for assembly. That assembly will begin at the next work session which is scheduled for July 11th. The team decided to take advantage of Martin Collard s offer of a NCE-DCC Powercab system and, at the same time, placed an order for a Bachmann DCC-sound equipped ALCO S4 switcher through Borodino Scale Line Train Shop (read Martin Collard). To provide a more complete demonstration, the layout will also be able to operate on DC. When the project was being thought through, everyone knew that at least a few of the necessary items would be donated, but the response from the membership has been remarkable. Nearly everything on the list of needs that Roger passed around at the June 12th meeting has been offered, and several offers were duplicated. Ed O Rourke and Bill Brown will make the final determination on which structures will be used from all of those offered. While the layout is being built, Roger is also putting together material that will be used for a Don t forget that the regional convention is coming up in Albany, at the Desmond Hotel, September Please note that registration fees are higher after August 15th don t wait! Along with clinics and the model contest, about two dozen layouts will be open, and several are world class. Information can be accessed through the NER website: Bob (Loose Spikes, continued from page 2) The 2016 NER Convention will be at the Desmond Hotel in Albany, hosted by the Hudson Berkshire Division, September 15-18, Train Watching Event Previous editions have listed the Division Train Watching Day as Sunday August 13. The correct date is Sunday August 14. We regret the error. From Ray Howard-Update on the Lakeshores Petition to Join NER - I turned in the completed Petition to NFR President Richard Hatton at the NFR Convention in Ottawa, Ontario, CA on Saturday, May 7. Later in the day he told me he had checked over the petition and it looked to be complete (we had three signatures more than the required 2/3rds). The last week in May I contacted him to ask what happens next. His reply: Currently I am awaiting a reply from the NER that they are still willing to accept the members they said (Loose Spikes continued on page 7) PAGE 3

4 From The Dispatcher's Desk As you are no doubt aware, co-editor Ed Olszewski spends a fair amount of time on the road for his job. Best not to inquire about some of the places he visits, lest you be visited by a drone or some fellows in dark glasses. But life on the road also means life in hotel rooms. Many who follow such a life relieve the boredom by visiting cocktail lounges and other even less healthy places. Ed has found a better way to pass the time. He carries with him a tool kit and builds models. What you see to the left is the result of his latest hotel stay. Obviously there are limits to what is possible in a hotel room. (Spray painting is definitely out, and it is unlikely one could bring a craftsman kit home on a plane without damage.) A compact selection of tools is also needed no room for the chop saw, and sharp or pointed objects have to go in checked luggage. But as you can see, it is possible to be very creative with limited means. Certainly one could assemble a car kit, or a small structure. I recall that Ed once did a clinic at a Division meeting on how he organizes his tools for various projects. Perhaps he can reprise that for us at some future meeting or write up a story about it for publication. Something to think about. Nice modeling, Ed! See you all at the picnic! Ed and Ed Central New York Division, NER, NMRA General Meeting June 12, 2016 Mike Shanahan Call to order by Superintendent Bob Verkuyl at 2:37 PM Thank you to Mike Shanahan for hosting the Division Charlie Albee gave a Paymaster's Report, with a little under $2, in the bank. A sign-up sheet for hosting future meetings was passed around. Roger Beiswenger presented a proposal to build a display layout. Considerable discussion ensued. Moved by Bill Brown, Seconded by Bernard Watkins, passed unanimously. Bob encouraged members to attend the NER Convention in Albany Bob also reminded members about the picnic at Finger Lakes Live Steamers, and assigned A-F salad, G-M side dish, N-T snack, U-Z Dessert. Bill Brown gave a presentation on the NMRA Achievement Program. Meeting concluded with the raffle and photo contest Meeting adjourned at 4:00 PM Respectfully submitted, Bob Verkuyl, for Chief Clerk, absent from meeting. Raffle income $46.00 PAGE 4

The award itself is held by the recipient for the year term in which it is given, until awarded the following year to a new winner. Each recipient, nominated by any division member, then chosen from the nominations by the MOW Award Committee) becomes a life member of said award committee, and is no longer eligible to receive the award a second time. The award was instituted so as to recognize those members who have given of themselves to our Division for the benefit of the entire membership. The committee has met. Who will be the lucky winner this year? Come to the picnic and find out! Lakeshores Petition, continued from page 3 they would. Mostly a formality but its been 2.5 years. I will then send a copy of the signature list with the request to be transferred to all necessary people at NMRA. They will then add it to the agenda of the spring meeting. Once passed, I will be notified and Chattanooga will update everyone's NMRA membership and mail out the new cards. So my guess would be early fall. PAGE 7

8 As part of our Alaska cruise in 2015 Judy and I rode the White Pass and Yukon at Skagway. The day we were there they were only running diesels. Below left is a GE unit from the 1950's. Below right is an example of the ALCO units bought in the 1960's. (All photos, Ed O'Rourke) They also run steam. #73 below left is a restored Baldwin Mikado, purchased by the railroad in the 1940's. They also have a Baldwin consolidation from 1907 that was sold and then bought back to provide back-up to #73. I think it is the loco below right, although it was not marked. It did not appear to be operational when we visited. There were a couple of other steamers on the property, but they also did not appear operational. We also visited Vancouver, BC. The Roundhouse Community Center converted from the former CP shops, houses Engine 374, below left, which pulled the first CP passenger train into Vancouver when the line opened. The turntable, below right is restored as part of an outdoor plaza. PAGE 8
