2 Greetings to Fellow ABTO Members: THE ABTO GAZETTE Well, the first month of 2018 has come and gone. We had a productive meeting at Danny Farrow s House even though we got a little damp. Unfortunately, our first auction of the year had to be rescheduled due to the cold and rain. The auction has been rescheduled to be held on February 17th after this month s meeting at Florence Quaintance s residence in East Mesa. On another note, we were asked to participate in the East Valley Bluegrass Festival on March 10th and 11th. Not only will we be able to listen to some great music and relax with friends but, also, display our trains. Some new members might come out to this event. Our Board of Directors are also working on setting up several short seminars on various topics. These seminars are designed to help new and experienced members alike to build or expand upon their railroad setups. (ABTO Bylaws) Update on Bill Jeffrey Bill is husband of Amanda and has been in the hospital since January 15. Bill had open heart surgery to replace/repair a mitral valve and also congestive heart failure. Right now it is 2 steps forward and one back. It will be a long haul. Amanda is mainly at the hospital. 4 THE ABTO GAZETTE ABTO MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 2018 Held at Danny Farrow s Home Darrell Woolfolk, President, opened the meeting. Darrell W. welcomed new members John Clark, Sherry & Ron Schroeder, Lee Wallace and visitors Randy and Doug, friends of James Riddle. Darrell W. thanked Danny Farrow for hosting the meeting. Darrell introduced the new board. OLD BUSINESS: A. Club Survey Jim Gardner presented information on the survey. He hopes the information from the survey will help grow the club and serve the membership. Jim is also making video s of member s layouts. B. Library Darrell W mentioned there are books and videos available to members. He also mentioned that the club is accepting donation of books. A complete listing is available. C. Minutes were approved as in the November Gazette. Ken Hawkins motioned to approve the minutes. Don Halver seconded the motion. All approved. D. Christmas Open Houses Darrell W reported a $ profit after advertising in 2016, approximately $ profit in 2017 without any advertising costs. The donations help to pay the storage cost. In spite of inclement weather all went well. It was suggested to move the opening hours earlier in the day. E. Spring Open Houses will be cancelled in 2018, due to previous scheduled events. F. Tucson Turn a Round will be April 7, Members living on the eastside are encouraged to host the event. Please contact one of the board members if interested. G. Members Auction was cancelled due to weather. Vince Simpson motioned to move the auction to February 17 after the membership meeting. Ken Hawkins seconded the motion. All approved. H. February meeting will be at Florence Quaintance s residence. Member s auction will take place after the meeting. I. Dues are due no later than February 28, J. If that s too much to cover in one day, Joanne and Jim will offer a second session in March, recapping the first workshop and expanding it to answer any questions that came up in the first round. Joanne and Jim guarantee an interesting and valuable experience for anyone who attends, and guests are welcome. Lakeside Drive Unit 1 Gilbert, AZ ARIZONA BIG TRAIN OPERATORS OBJECTIVES Membership in Arizona Big Train Operators (ABTO) is open to anyone with an interest in gardening and the creation & operation of large scale model railways. At our meetings, items of mutual interest associated with the hobby are discussed and demonstrated. Meetings are typically held at member s homes, where they have the opportunity to showcase their railway creations. General meetings are usually held on the third Saturday of the month. ABTO BOARD MEETINGS Board meetings will be held on Wednesday prior to the general meeting of each month. Board meetings are open to members who are current on their dues and have an item for the agenda. If you plan to attend, call a Board member to confirm location, time and date ABTO MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION The renewal fee is $30.00 per year and new members $30.00 plus $8.00 Badge fee entitles you to attend all meetings and events, to receive the monthly newsletter. Additional badges may be purchased. ABTO CONTRIBUTIONS Members are encouraged to contribute articles, letters, illustrations and/or photographs related to garden railroading for inclusion in the newsletter and/or posting on the club web site. Members who have hobby-related items for sale or trade may submit an advertisement for publication and/or posting at no charge. Please limit each ad to a maximum of four lines. Accompanying photos will be considered for publication as space allows. 8
