1 Pennsylvania District 14-D Lions District 14-Details Lions, Lioness & Leos, June 1, 2011 A Message from Our District Governor District Governor 14 D Jim Bolin 34 Spring Hill Lane, Mountville, PA jimbolions@embarqmail.com Lion Gloria and I attended the State Convention in Cranberry Woods, Pa, May and at the International Banquet our Keynote Speaker for the evening was Lions International President, Sid Scruggs, III. The ladies were addressed at different meetings throughout the weekend by Judy Scruggs. Three Lions from District 14D were awarded metals by International President Sid at this banquet. Presidential awards were presented to Council Chair, PDG Steve Benedict and PDG Leonard Smith and a Leadership metal to PDG Larry Miller. It made me proud as your Governor to stand beside these Lions when they received their awards for all that they have done for Lionism and our District. Inside this issue: Tree Chairperson Wanted 2 PR Pointers 4 WMMR Website Update 5 New LCIF Website 7 State Convention Highlights Ride For Sight Information 10 9 District 14D Ride for Sight, June 19 th, Lebanon. Mark the date now and plan to attend. A full day of breakfast, lunch and Country music entertainment. Many clubs will be holding Installation of Officers in the upcoming weeks for Lions will be preparing to go to Seattle WA for the International Convention, June 29 through July 8 and the Installation of your incoming Governor and First Lady. It is hard to believe that June is here already and that my term as your District Governor is almost over. As we approach the end of the year together, Lion Gloria and I would like to express to each of you our sincere appreciation for your friendship and faithfulness in serving those in need. It has been my honor to serve beside you as your District Governor. Truly, you have answered the call to be a Beacon of Sight. SABVI at the Barnstormers 12 District Governor, Lion Jim First Lady, Lion Gloria

2 PAGE 2 DISTRICT 14-DETAILS JUNE 2011 Words from District Governor Elect Bob Lion Bob Eberly lionbob@ptd.net 906 Clearview Ave., Ephrata, PA What a weekend was had by all at the state convention in Cranberry Township north of Pittsburgh. The theme for the convention was Bringing Back the Fun. 14N did this by having clowns running around all during the weekend. Our district had 23 registered including Council Chair Steve, DG Jim, PDGs, District Chairs, VDGs, and Lions. Three events were the most memorable for me. First was Saturday afternoon, Dr. Nau spoke about her research on the brain port device that allows blind individuals see black and whites images through the nerves of their tongue. It was truly amazing. Just think, we helped to provide the funds for this important device through the Eye Research Foundation. The second event was at the International Banquet on Saturday night. As we all know PID Dr. Harold Ott has been at rehab. Well, to the surprise of the 400+, Lion Harold walked into the banquet on his own two feet. Everyone stood and applauded. I don t think anyone had dry eyes. I spoke with Lion Harold about Lions business earlier that day, that is, Nittany Lion business concerning the players on the Penn State football team this year. He is sharp as a tack. We all wish him well as he progresses. The final event was more personal. On Sunday evening at the Honors Banquet the outgoing district governor pins the incoming governor. It became all too real that my time is just about here. If you have not been to a state convention lately, think about next year at Gettysburg, May 17 th 20 th, 2012 and mark your calendar now to go. Lion Bob Eberly

4 PAGE 4 DISTRICT 14-DETAILS JUNE 2011 Musings of the 2nd Vice District Governor Lions, Lioness, Leos, We reached the end of May and hopefully a slowdown in the rain. The State Convention is over and if you have not been to any you should try to attend one. It was a great weekend where we learned a few things and had a great time as well. I saw two clubs got new members. Way to go! So see it is possible to get new members in the last months of the Lions year. Hope your holiday weekend was great. I hope to see all of you at the Ride for Sight on Father Day. Have a great summer, Lion Joan PR Pointers Club presidents, as you plan for the next Lions year, I urge you to designate a member to handle public relations. It is vital for the health of our local clubs, our District, our Multiple District, and Lions International that we employ good public relations to increase both our visibility in our communities and our membership. PR idea for June: Performers are urged to have a good beginning and a good ending to their act, because that is what their audience remembers. As we wind down the current Lions year and prepare for the next, keep that axiom in mind. Be sure that the work your club did during the current year gets recognition in your local papers; all it takes is a brief summary of the year s service projects, along with a mention of whatever your next project is. And start planning now to publicize your summer activities, perhaps beginning with your club s participation in the annual Ride for Sight. Thank you, Mountville Lions Club, for inviting me to visit and speak to you. To hear what they heard, contact me at jorings@yahoo.com or or schedule through VDG Joan Rohrbach. Lion Joanna Smith District PR Chairperson Check Out the New Lions Corner Courtesy of SABVI In appreciation of your support, the Susquehanna Foundation for the Blind (fundraising arm of SABVI) is adding a Lions Corner to their Insights newsletter, published bi-monthly. If you have any upcoming events you would like to be included, please them to megan@sfblind.org for inclusion. 7 PAGE 7 DISTRICT 14-DETAILS JUNE 2011 New LCIF Web Site LCI and LCIF continue to work hard to improve their international platform of communication. LCIF needed a better way to share with our Lions and the world why our global Foundation is truly like no other. To do this, LCIF has created and launched their own brand new Web site, They are no longer part of the LCI Site (There is still is a Link on the LCI Site to get to the LCIF Site). This new site gives you more tools and resources to promote the good work we Lions are doing. On the LCIF homepage, the Recent Grants area highlights some of recently awarded funds for grant projects. The Changing Lives area links to stories of individuals, partners and donors who have all been impacted by the work of Lions, made possible by LCIF. These stories inspire us to do even more. And you can even share how LCIF has helped in your life or community by Sharing a Story. Our News section includes the latest information from the Foundation, including my monthly messages. In About Us, you can learn more about our history, partners and leaders. An entire section of our new site is devoted to you, our Lions members. Our Lions Center provides information on grants, ways to donate and how to get involved in our many programs. The materials section includes ready-to-use publications, forms, videos and power points that you can share with your club, district or community. Please visit the LCIF new site at These improvements will help all of us to better communicate the impact and work of the Foundation.
