2 Presidents Elect Training Seminar (PETS) Orientation/ Presidents Mid-Year Summit Scheduled in Springfield January 27, 2018 Brian Barstead, District 6460 District Governor Elect, Rotary Club of Springfield Sunrise The past year has been a big year for all of you, and me too, starting about this time last year as you prepared for your year ahead. I know my year went by fast, and I hope you had fun! The next six months will go by fast too and your clubs have another half of this year to continue to Make a Difference in As you may remember, last year when you all attended PETS Orientation at Scheels in Springfield in Late January, jointly we held a Mid-Year Presidents' Summit at the same location. At that meeting, we invited all of you to come back at the same time the next year for your Summit. (The idea annually is to get the current Rotary Presidents who are in the middle of their year together with the Presidents Elect and District Leaders to provide information about what's ahead for the upcoming year). The past few years the President's summit has not been as well-attended as we would have liked. I think Presidents who attended were there primarily to support the PE's and we really didn't have much for them to do. I suspect some were getting a little meeting weary. Being a club president is a big commitment. I get that. So we're changing up the format a bit this year. First, we're going to have some time during the day for the President's and President's Elect and leaders to work together (away from their club meetings, and other club duties) to talk about their goals for their clubs for the remainder of this year and for next year. We ll have a report on the Club Visioning consulting service that we provide to clubs, an update on what's happening with Youth Service (Youth Exchange, RYLA, Rotaract, and Interact), and a short session on Membership. Club presidents will also have a private meeting with your current and future district governors where you can share any concerns or talk about anything you want, and we'll also discuss "life after being a club president" where we can communicate what opportunities are available for Rotarians after their Presidency time is complete. (We re wanting to grow our group of people interested in working with clubs to help them achieve what they want for themselves). The day starts at 8:30 AM with Registration and Unless you plan to stay with your President Elect for the entire session that he/she is involved in, you'll be done by 1:30 PM. The Presidents will be done at 2:15 PM. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided for all participants. There's NO COST to attend. Registration will be open on Register Me on the district database (DACdb) soon. I'll send you another when register me link is up and running. I hope that many of you will attend. Like much of what happens in Rotary, the quality of the day will be greatly enhanced by the participation and experiences you've gained this year. Thanks for your work in 2017! Happy Holidays and we'll see you in soon in 2018! ROTARY DISTRICT WAY TODAY - PAGE 2
3 Club News and Events We have been receiving numerous of news stories from our clubs throughout the District for programs, events, and projects that they are PROUD of. We will start sharing ALL of these remarkable stories to the district membership. Please send ANY newsworthy event that you are proud of (and you SHOULD BE) that your clubs are doing, and please share these items with all of us in the District. I would LOVE to fill the newsletter with all the WONDERFUL things that all of you do every single day in your communities and in the world. I have started adding club stories on the District Website. Expect to hear more on this future enhancement VERY SOON, as we develop the new capabilities of the new website, under the heading District/Club Stories. I will develop training soon to make this happen, via webinars, and sessions at District Assembly in the Spring of We want to hear what you are doing around the District, and share it with others! THANKS DAVE Dave Knieriem, Past District Governor District Newsletter Editor and Webmaster Aledo Rotary Delivers Food Baskets Martin Mac McGee, Club President, Rotary Club of Aledo Aledo Rotary with the help of employees at Mercer Market in Aledo, IL packed the clubs annual Christmas Food Baskets. 4 Mason City Club Receives Energy Education Grant Dave Knieriem, Club President, Rotary Club of Mason City Through a partnership with Elevate Energy (and a GREAT effort from their representative, Tina Marie Williamson), the City of Mason City, and the Mason City Christian Church, the Mason City Rotary was generously awarded a $2,000 grant for community support. The grant was awarded through a competition, as part of a grant from the Illinois Science & Energy Innovation Foundation. Elevate Energy is educating, engaging, and empowering consumers to harness the benefits of the smart grid. Elevate Energy leads a state-wide program of communitybased outreach, house parties, and face-to-face communication about smart grid and smart meters. A subgrant includes a faith-based component led by Faith in Place. During the competition with two other Central Illinois communities, Mason City came in second, which qualified us for a grant award. In addition to the $2,000 grant the Mason City Rotary received, Mason City Christian Church received a $2,000 grant, and the City of Mason City received $10,000 in funds from Elevate Energy as well. It is wonderful when a community and organizations partner and collaborate to a common cause! The club will be allocating the funds to projects that our club decides on in the near future. As this year's Rotary International President Ian Risley has stated: "What Does Rotary Do? ---- "Improve people's lives, locally and globally, through service." We intend to use the funds to do just that! ROTARY DISTRICT WAY TODAY - PAGE 4
5 Mason City Mournes Passing of Bob Paddack 50-Year Member Dave Knieriem, Club President, Rotary Club of Mason City The Rotary Club of Mason City mourns the death of our very dear member and good friend, Reverend Robert Paddack, who passed away on Friday, December 22, A respected and loved member of our club was called home please keep his family in your prayers. We honor Bobs service to our community and Rotary. Bob was a member of the Rotary Club of Mason City since May 1997 (we recognized him as a 50-year member posthumously), and was one of our must loyal and devoted members. Bob was a multiple Past President of our club, and a Paul Harris Fellow. Reverend Paddack was the epitome of the Rotary Motto Service Above Self, and a walked the talk of the Four-Way-Test. A TRUE leader! (Editor s Note: Bob was one of my favorite Rotarians, and a true mentor for me, a TRUE gentleman, a TRUE friend, and TRUE Rotarian). We all will miss Bob tremendously. Rest in peace, our friend! ROTARY DISTRICT WAY TODAY - PAGE 5
