2 Today s Discussion Purpose: Provide an Update on the Peacebuilder Club Initiative within District 7610 Agenda: Discuss the importance of Peacebuilding, Peacebuilder Clubs and Overview the NewGen Peacebuilder Program Benefit: We can empower the next generation of peacebuilders to making meaningful change in the world
3 Peace is Critical to the Rotary Mission RI Mission Statement: The Mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. TRF Mission Statement: The Mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Object of Rotary The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
4 Areas of Focus In his 1992 report, An Agenda for Peace, former UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali introduced the concept of peacebuilding to the UN as action to identify and support structures, which will tend to strengthen and solidify peace in order to avoid a relapse into conflict. Peace and prosperity are inseparable. When one is absent, the other is at risk
5 What is Peace? Types of Peace - Negative Peace absence of direct/physical and verbal violence (both macro and micro) - Positive Peace - presence of conditions of well-being and just relationships: social, economic, political, ecological Types of Violence - Direct/visible violence physical violence, war, extermination, euthanasia, ridicule - Indirect/invisible/less visible violence - Cultural violence beliefs, values, fear, hatred, dismissiveness, negative perceptions regarding abilities, pity - Structural violence racism, poverty, unequal access to opportunities/services (education, health, employment), inaccessible built environment, poverty, institutionalization/hiding away by families

Levels of Peace - Harmony with Self - Personal peace: self-respect, inner resources: love, hope - Harmony with Others - Interpersonal peace: respect for other persons, justice, tolerance, cooperation - Intergroup/social peace: respect for other groups within nation justice, tolerance, cooperation - Global peace: respect for other nations: justice, tolerance, cooperation - Harmony with Nature - Peace between humans and the earth and beyond: respect for the environment: sustainable living, simple lifestyle

8 Peacebuilder Committee Started in November 2017 Committee members expressed a desire to help as many clubs participate in the District Peacebuilding Initiative as possible To achieve that goal Committee members discussed focusing on the following objectives (over the next 12 months): Educating Rotarians on the definition of Peacebuilding, how they can contribute and what resources are available to support them in their efforts Connecting Rotarians so that they can learn from and work with one another on Peacebuilding projects Gathering and organizing resources to support Rotarians in their peacebuilding efforts (tools, processes, case studies, etc.)
9 What is a Peacebuilder Club A Peacebuilder Club is a Rotary club that is dedicated to diminishing the root causes of conflict and/or resolving an existing conflict helping to alleviate suffering and promote a more peaceful and positively connected world for the benefit of all.
10 Preparing to Become a Peacebuilder Club Form a Peacebuilder Committee in your club with a designated Chairperson Learn about Rotary s rich history in Peacebuilding Connect with other clubs and districts that have made unique contributions to Peacebuilding Encourage members of the committee to learn about the Peacebuilding process and Peacebuilding skills Brainstorm possible peace initiatives and projects that your club may undertake and support Review the ideas and select the ones your club will undertake Inform and engage your club members around your peacebuilding agenda
11 Qualifying as a Peacebuilder Club To achieve Peacebuilder Club Status in , a Club must meet the following three criteria: 1. Complete a Club Project: Complete a club project where the primary focus is peacebuilding and/or conflict resolution. The project can be conducted solely by your club, or in collaboration with other Rotary clubs, government organizations, or any other outside group. 2. Promote the Rotary Peace Fellowship Program: Submit a candidate for a Rotary Peace Fellowship and/or actively work on recruitment efforts for the program (ie. connect the District Peacebuilder Team with organizations that have potential candidates, or conduct marketing outreach outside of Rotary within District 7610.) 3. Provide Financial Support for the Rotary Peace Centers: Commit $500 towards district support for Rotary Peace Centers. Note: You may replace items 2 and/or 3 above with additional peacebuilding and/or conflict resolution club projects.
