REGIONAL DIRECTOR: Bob Kehl See Above WEB MASTERS: Bill & Lydia Bender billwb@sbcglobal.net lydiabender@live.com Our Next Meeting Saturday May 10, :30 A.M. (pre-meeting activities 9:00 A.M.) Pleasanton Senior Center From The Pres By Bob Kehl Reports from the TVC members that attended the Annual Oakhurst Rendezvous last month indicated another great time was had by all. A lot of times, attendance membership of the participating clubs are somewhat competitive during the dinners. This year, Jerry Jensen and Carol Boyles made a big hit by enhancing the club table with a table runner decorated with our club logo. GOOD JOB!! The fancied runner was printed by the local shirt printer present at the event. Paul Fackler and Rick Jensen ran our soap carving display and we sold 5 kits. All in all, the 27 members attending had a great time and experience at the event. There are a lot of activities coming up in the next few months. Please check out the details in the Dates to Remember section of this newsletter. Several TVC members entered carvings and turnings in the annual Capital Woodcarvers Spring Show this weekend, May 3th and 4th. The club had two tables again this year for presenting soap carving for the kids and selling our soap carving kits. We had a lot of action for the soap carving this year with the kids. A hearty thanks to all that worked the table during the sales and soap carving instruction!! Much of the present school year, Paul Fackler, Rick Jensen, Mike Pocha, Ken Morgan, John Peterson, Rose Rodriguez and Bob Kehl have been teaching wood and soap carving at 5 schools locally. The soap carving events were a big hit for the kids as well as the teaching members, although we were all very tired after an all day session with 124 kids at Fairland School. The kids working with wood carving projects are coming up with some really fine projects. In order to bring these projects more to the attention of the public, we are providing admissions logistics and costs for entering their projects at the Alameda County Fair. Several of the kids are entering two of their projects and perhaps three providing, if they can get them finished in time. A lot of this activity sounds like what our TVC members go through on projects. Anyway, the kids are excited and I hope this effort will enhance continued participation in the Fair s Youth Woodcarving. Speaking of the Alameda County Fair, the deadline for turning in your entry forms or online is May 21st. Project entry dates are June 13th 15th, so you need to get your project ready soon. The Fair s theme this year is taste the red white and blue, so we also need to think about our club display in honor of this theme. I think our usual red white and blue backdrop will be fine for the display, however, a central representative wood carving along with our best carvings should be discussed. Put on your thinking caps, so we can really make a splash with our cabinet display. We will be demonstrating wood carving again this year and selling our raffle tickets at the Fair. A signup list for the demo and soap carving is available from Paul Fackler. It is important to get on the list, so receiving free Fair entry and parking tickets can be established. You also can see who your Carving Buddy is for a particular time.
