1 VOLUME 37, NUMBER 08 August 2012 Latest Tailwinds Derek Abramson, Editor The Dog Days of summer have arrived and passed, but the flying continues. Although we have been plagued by real hot weather, the flying has been plentiful. On August 15th, Roger Counts organized the now annual AVTI Summer Camp Demo. There was some great flying with a little pyrotechnics thrown in. Be sure to check out the article in the Newsletter. The Build and Fly has officially started, there are several participants with a very wide variety of aircraft. My-self, I have started Dick Skoglund s Tri-Motor makes a nice photo pass for the children photos of your particular build, please me the photos so I could get them posted. The Helicopter Area here at AVTI is getting a lot of use lately. Bob Campbell and Chuck Mosa have been a regular site at the field for a while now. Recently, Chuck Mosa has accepted a sponsorship with Thunder Tiger so make sure you congratulate him on a job well done. Michael Cruz with his own design model. This was taken after a successful first flight building the Super Sport Twin. This will be an interesting build. As I get more information on other build jobs, I will start posting progress reports online. If you would like photos posted of your particular build, please me the- Bob Campbell s Thunder Tiger G-4 Volume 37, Number 08 Page 1

3 President s Message Hello AVTI Members Welcome to August!!! The hottest month of the year Everyone was in pretty good spirits and it seems if you want to keep from roasting, get there early between 7-7:30 before the oven warms up. Let s mark the calendar one more time as I made it out to the field to fun fly with my son Josh for a couple hours. I m pretty excited my son went to his first race and finished first in his class. As I talked about in a previous newsletter, I crashed in my first race and also again in my first quarter midget race also, so I was super impressed that he finished the day with 2 trophies for top qualifier and first place. I also observed how the race was run and took some notes so we might one day be able to host something similar and raise a little cash along with incorporating some fun and skill without sacrificing safety. One thing I can say about the club in Salinas(Chualar), they had volunteers helping facilitate and run the event. They were well organized, well prepped, and happy to be hosting racers for the day. I hope that our club could build to that level of participation some day. Of the members that were there to race, they rotated and help run the line when they weren t racing. The team spirit was all about having fun and it showed. I bring this up, because without this level of support from the club, it s impossible to have these type of events. I would like to hear from all of the members in whatever forum you would like, , phone or at the meeting. Would you like to see more organized events at the field a couple times a year or would you prefer to have the field open so you can fun fly whenever you want? How many events per year would you support? Are you available to help and how often? The BOD would like to discuss some of these things at our meetings, but one of the things that keeps coming up is lack of volunteers to run a bigger event, so please speak up and be heard! Let us know what you think!! Fly safe, have fun!! Doug Hello AVTI members! VP s Message A lot of you might have seen me flying my new E-Flite F-4B Phantom II at the field lately. It is a beautiful looking model and has proven to be a great flier. The color scheme is from an F-4 that flew off the USS Coral Sea during the Vietnam conflict. It scored a kill downing a MiG 17. One day Jack Bugaren was taking a look at my model when he read the name of the RIO, or back-seater, on the model. He then said, I know that guy! The guy is Bill Freckleton, a LTJG during the MiG kill flight. He is now the F-22 Lead Range Control Officer at Edwards AFB and lives in Palmdale. I asked Jack if he could take my model to show Bill and if he would be kind enough to sign it. He contacted Bill and he was gracious enough to agree. So one day Jack took my model with him and the next day he returned it with it signed. Bill also sent Jack some info on the MiG engagement that day. It was very interesting to read the events. I m hoping we can someday get Bill, call sign Farkle, to come out and see a model of his F-4 fly. Volume 37, Number 08 Page 3
4 It is a great honor for me to have a true American Hero s signature on my model. I may be lucky enough to send the canopy to the Pilot, Gary Weigand and also have his signature on it. What a thrill! Bill told Jack that the actual aircraft is on a pedestal outside of the Key West NAS. But he also mentioned that the E-Flite model had a more accurate color scheme of the aircraft as it flew during the MiG engagement. Seems that they repainted the aircraft in a later color scheme. Here s a picture of Bill with my model Current Membership Total - 75 Members New Members for 2012/ Members Members not Renewed for 2012/ Members Last year our peak membership was 101 members, with a total dues collected of $5, So even though our membership is currently at 75, we have already collected $ more in dues. 6 Barkley s Safety Tip Hey guys! This batch of heat we ve been getting has been rough at times. It makes the Boss get out to the field early trying to beat the heat. But at least we get home before it gets too hot. These neat electric models everyone has been flying are sure cool! But watch out. It can be easy not to remember just how much power they can make. Be very careful when you run one up. That prop can sure draw items in to it! Watch that loose towel or model part that s just too close to the prop. It can get sucked in to it in a hurry! Also, why not move around to the back of the model and hold it by the tail? Holding it from the front is just asking for something bad to happen. I sure wouldn t want to see one of my buddies get hurt! I hope to see you all at the field soon! 7 AVTI Hosts Church Summer Camp Roger Counts On August 15 th, the Club hosted a group of children from the Lancaster United Methodist Church Summer Camp. Attendees included 10 children and three chaperones, all of whom were provided snacks and drinks during the air-show which lasted a little over 3 hours. Club members demonstrated many types of radio controlled model aircraft and aerospace devices, including glow and electric aircraft (scale and pattern), helicopters and rockets. Many thanks to Tony F, Derek A for the ducted fan, helicopters, and rockets. Thanks also to Don C who did a superb job as announcer. And a big thank you to all the others who supported this annual event. The Methodist Church Summer Camp is an annual, 11 week event which consists of themes such as Sports, Bible School, Science and Aerospace, Water Park, etc. The cost is $131 per week for the children and they really seem to enjoy the activities. And such was the case on August 15 th all the children seemed to have a really good time. Volume 37, Number 08 Page 7
