10 with Pat Cahill Fundamentals in Digital Control with Sports and Underclass In his program, Pat speaks to working with digital photography, file management and digital workflow. He covers digital capture, digital files and workflow from the camera to the lab. Cahill Studios has been digitally capturing over 3 years. Pat will also speak about the financial benefits of adding volume photography to a traditional studio. His program includes how to acquire, service and retain accounts. How to set packages, identify trends in the industry, compete with the large companies and enhance the model of traditional studio operations are some of the topics covered. Biography: Pat Cahill has been involved in photography most of his life. He grew up near Lindstrom, MN where his parents owned a part-time photography studio. Pat photographed his first wedding at age 13. He moved to Amery, WI, a small town of 2500, where he met his wife Merry. They were married in Pat and Merry have 5 children ages The oldest, Dan, (currently in Iraq) is married and lives near by with wife Jessica and 4 yr old daughter Abby. Oldest daughter Katie (Cahill) Scott works full-time for the studio. Matt, the third oldest, is a taxidermist. Joy is in collage and works for the studio. Tom is still in high school and has a job outside the studio, but also will help at the studio when needed. Pat and Merry opened Cahill Studios of Photography part-time in 1978 as a source of extra income while Merry worked as a RN at the local hospital and Pat was an investigator for a Sheriff s department. Merry went to work full-time for the studio in 1985 and Pat went full-time in They soon had two storefront studios, one in Amery and one in Rice Lake. Simultaneously, they were doing bank and store promotions along with underclass and sports. After 6 years of operation; they, with five kids, made a drastic change in the focus of their studio. The storefronts were sold and they went back to a home studio and focused on sports and underclass. Currently Merry and Katie operate the studio. Pat works for American Color Imaging and helps on days that a third photographer is needed. He also does on location training with the studio when an American Color customer wants to accompany Pat, Merry and Katie to see how to photograph sports at a pace of 100 students per hour, or underclass of 800 students a day. 10
11 They currently photograph approximately 20,000 underclass and 10,000 sports per year. Since they changed the focus of the business, they have experienced a drastic change in their financial picture and have freedoms that they could not have had in just operating a traditional studio. Pat spends much of his time working for American Color Imaging dealing with independent studios teaching the benefits of sports and underclass as a way to even out cash flow and relieve some of the financial stress in the seasonal type of traditional studio photography. Pat has helped many studios with his system of digital control and digital work flow regains the control and confidence they had with film. Pat s system saves the studios time and money by shorting turnaround times and taking advantage of the $1.85 units they can get from American Color Imaging. Pat is a PPA, WPPA, PSPA, and SPAC member and is the Vendor Representative on the WPPA Board of Directors.
