2 WHAT DOES THE IOWA BREWERS GUILD DO? The Iowa Brewers Guild is a non-profit organization working to showcase and improve the quality of beer brewed in Iowa, foster communication among the state s brewers, advocate for the promotion of the local brewing community, and lobby for progressive changes in Iowa laws to benefit the craft brewing industry in the state. We have helped to lobby for and pass a number of bills helping to benefit the expansion and livelihood of breweries in Iowa. Most of these laws also help the wine and spirits industries, too, like HF 607, which included allowing native breweries to sell wine in their taprooms a lot of whom looked to their grape-crushing counterparts for selections to feature. WHAT SORT OF EVENTS DO YOU PUT ON? The Iowa Brewers Guild is dedicated to not only helping educate the brewers of Iowa and also the public, but also to ensuring that beer receives the festivities it deserves. We put on educational programs like the i-best one day seminar and tippling for commercial and homebrewers once a year, and are adding many smaller events like Off- Flavor tastings to improve understanding and commitment to high quality beer. We also put on festivals like the Iowa Craft Brew Festival in Des Moines, the Festival of Iowa Beers in Amana, and the Iowa Brewers Olympics in Cedar Rapids. Including events, we also maintain an Iowa Beer Trails set of maps that encourage the public to try out new breweries for them in areas they may not always travel to. WHY IS THE IOWA BREWING INDUSTRY WORTH SUPPORTING? Iowa currently boasts over 80 breweries with many more in the planning stages. Including breweries-in-planning, the IBG has over 85 brewery members, and over 45 allied trade members. A 2015 Iowa Craft Beer Economic Report, funded by the Iowa Wine and Beer Promotion Board, revealed that the Iowa craft brewing industry: supports over 1,500 jobs has a $100 million impact on the economy produced nearly 41,000 barrels of beer in 2014 is projected to triple in five years, producing more than 146,000 barrels annually by 2019 In 2016, according to the Brewers Association, the total Iowa production was 61,232 barrels. 3 Events Iowa Craft Brew Festival Des Moines, IA June 2018 The Iowa Craft Brew Festival brings over 3,000 thirsty Iowa beer lovers together to try out tons of different beers from breweries big and small the large majority centering around local Iowa craft beers. 5 Festival of Iowa Beers Amana, IA September 2018 The Festival of Iowa Beers was started in Amana by Millstream Brewing Co. The Iowa Brewers Guild now helps to keep one of the first Iowa beer festivals thriving, the attendance capping at 1,200 people. 6 Iowa Brewers Olympics Cedar Rapids, IA May 2018 Part of Cedar Rapids Beer Week, the inaugural Iowa Brewers Olympics took place at Lion Bridge Brewing Company on Friday, May 12, Iowa breweries vied for superiority in a series of events designed to test both palates and speed of moving grain from pallet to pallet. The 2018 Social will take place at Jackalope Brewing Company in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday, May 2. 8 Educational i-best Brewers Education Seminar and Tippling Rotational Locations November 2018 Launched in 2014, the Iowa Brewers Education Seminar & Tippling (i-best) is a daylong series of seminars designed by the Iowa Brewers Guild (IBG) to educate and inspire Iowa s brewing community. With content relevant to both new and veteran brewers (including homebrewers digging deeper into their craft) breakout sessions afford three learning tracks: technical brewing, legal issues, and business/marketing. These educational classes teach both commercial and homebrewers about the off flavors that can develop in beers and how they happen. 11 Beer Line Cleaning Classes Multiple Times/Locations through 2018 The IBG offers line cleaning classes for approximately 24 persons a class. These classes offer brewers a chance to learn more about the best way to offer line cleaning to accounts, best practices, and how to ensure lines in their own taproom are kept in good working order. 15 Great American Beer Festival Competition Beer Shipping September 2018 Each year Iowa brewers compete in various style categories at the Great American Beer Festival a 3 day event put on by the Brewers Association in Colorado. The importance of cold storage is imperative for these competition beers to be able to perform at the high level of quality that they should be able to do. A contribution to the temperature controlled shipping is a contribution to the success of these competing brewers.
