I want to just simply say this month that we need to keep our attitudes in check. This doesn't mean that we stop fighting for what we believe in and it doesn't mean we surrender. If we allow it though it can either destroy us or make us great. It is really all in our attitude. The following is a great Attitude adjuster. Today is a new day!! Have I ever taken the time to really consider the unbelievable power that is in that simple statement? The power of hope- hope for success, for dreams realized, goals achieved and new ones to be set. Hope that today I will emerge better than I was yesterday. There is forgiveness- release from past failures, bad judgments, careless mistakes, and uncaring decisions. Forgiveness for times when I wasted the gifts and talents I was so graciously given, choosing instead to take the less difficult path. Freedom- freedom from yesterday, from the box I have put myself in, from the constraints of others definition of me. Freedom to choose the direction of this hour, this day, this week, and this life. Also knowledgeknowledge gained from the lifetime it took me to get here. Knowledge that shaped me as a person, for better or worse, and knowledge I can use to paint the picture I want my life to be. And yes, there is fear fear of regret, fear of failure, fear of finding the last second chance, and fear of never touching the stars. But most of all, there is the fear that I may never realize that today is, truly, a new day. (Source: Tim Philipps) David
2 %&'' $ Contribute to our Political Action Committee at pac_contributions_new/ As all of you know this last weekend we (NAIFA, our Industry and our clients) lost a major battle in the fight against government control over the choices we have concerning our health care. But it is only one battle, the war is far from over. On Dec an early morning surprise attack on Pearl Harbor nearly knocked the US out of WWII before we were really engaged. Ironically, this Bill was also passed on a Sunday just like Pearl Harbor. We went on to win that war and I have to believe that in spite of this setback we can prevail here as well. I don t really like the system that we ve allowed to be created Pay to Play in order to have access to our elected representatives but it s the system we have and it still can work. Now more than ever we need to renew our commitment to fight this battle and put our money where our mouths are. If you joined NAIFA in order to further its ability to be an advocate on your behalf and on behalf of your client s interests then I urge you to reach out and join the PAC. If you are a current contributor then I thank you greatly and ask you to consider increasing your contribution level. You can either go to NAIFA s website : or contact me or Lori the State offices about how to get started. As a note of interest on 3/23/10 members of the state board and other supporters of the PAC gathered virtually to support our largest association, St. Louis, in an effort to reach their lapsed contributors. By the end of the first day we had raised over $ I will have the phonathon s final tally in next month s report. Remember, the battle may be lost but the War is far from over!! Greg Grimes ()*! )+ We have spent a lot of time this legislative session perfecting our reports to you on the weekly Gov Watch Program. The committee consisting of Greg Russell, Chairman, Ed Anderson, Randy Kraft, Greg Grimes and Roy Kern should be commended for their accomplishments this session. It has not been an easy task to review more than 60 bills, come up with a consensus on a position and post a comment on the Gov Watch system. These reports have been ed out to the local leaders and posted on the website each Friday. On February 11 th I attended the annual Fire Fighters Award Banquet hosted by the NAIFA Greater Kansas City local. More than 300 attended the banquet, the room was full of NAIFA members along with fire fighters, mayors and fire chiefs from all of the surrounding fire districts. This is their way of giving back to the communities and showing how much we appreciate the hard work and dedication given each day by these brave men and women. Janet Heitzig and Rick Hemphill, Ralph Ford and Joe Bartkoski also attended from the state board. On March 9, 2010, Ed Anderson, Greg Grimes and I worked a NAIFA membership booth at the CPCU conference in Columbia, MO. While not walking away with apps in hand we did get two great prospects and the names of both of the Farmers managers in the state. Lorie will follow up with these managers and try to arrange agency presentations in the near future. On March 23, 2010 the PAC Phon-a-thon was held for lapsed PAC contributors in St. Louis. We started the day with a conference call and the participants used the week to make their calls. Thanks to those who volunteered to make the calls: Ed Anderson, Greg Grimes, Carl Maus, Janet Heitzig, David Harjoe, Roger Lintner, Thad Lincoln, Crystal Burress, David Haymes, Tway Branstetter, Joe Bartkoski and Roy Kern. We will hold the first four hour Long Term Care Partnership Renewal class in Springfield on April 21, You will need this follow up class in the first license renewal period after you took the initial 8 hour training. Please call if you have questions about this law. If you would like to hold this class in your area and you think there is enough interest, please let me know. Thanks to A.D. Banker & Company for providing the materials and Roy Kern for instructing. If you haven t already, please register for the upcoming Day at the Capitol to be held on April 6, 2010 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City, MO. This meeting is being held jointly with the St. Louis Health Underwriters. The speaker will be from the Federal Tax Challenges Coalition. The luncheon begins at 11:00 am and the cost is $30.00 per person. The President Elect conference will be held at our office on May 13, 2010 please plan to attend if this is the role you will assume in your local association for the coming year Lorie Smith
3 ,&-$ It seems that every year the legislative session has a dominating theme. It varies, but no matter what the theme happens to be, it is impacted by the budget. For this session, bad news about the budget and an increasing shortfall appear to have actually become the theme. Budget cuts are rampant and it seems that there are no sacred cows. Even in education, it is not just about modifying an increase for the future, but actually considering not delivering on promises for the current year s budget. The budget is playing such a strong role this year, it has caused some legislators to threaten to kill bills that have even a remote possibility of increasing costs or diminishing state revenue. Such is the case with SB 900 which is based on adopting an NAIC model law. This bill and its companion, HB 1904 would increase consumer protections under the MO Guaranty Association by raising the protection level for annuities to $250,000, the same as the FDIC limit for CD s. Other important protections were also increased in health insurance, disability income, and long term care. The perceived impact by one Senator was that this would hurt the state s revenues since insurance companies get an offset in premium taxes for any assessments that they pay to the Guaranty Association. It is important to note, that the companies only pay assessments when another company is deemed unsolvent. With greater protections, it is possible that consumers would be more willing to save and invest in those very products such as annuities, disability and long term care that decrease dependency on the state and makes those insurance companies more financially secure, thereby reducing the chance they would have to pay assessments and the state would lose premium tax revenue. In fact, with increased sales, premium taxes would increase. The sponsor of the bill amended the language by gutting all of the important increases in protection to keep it alive. But there is still a chance for HB 1904 which has been perfected and should pass the House and then go to the Senate where it may face the same uninformed scrutiny.
