As I write this it is the coldest morning in nearly 3 weeks, but the weatherman says it will warm up. Mark your calendars for June Our annual meeting is planned for Hershey, Pa. this year, the Chocolate Capital of the world. Registration information, with a tentative agenda, will be sent out very soon. Speakers will address topics ranging from Health Care and Health Insurance costs for businesses and farmers to the usual updates on issues affecting cooperatives, such as taxes, upcoming legislation, and the economy in general. There is a golf tournament planned for Wednesday afternoon, and Thursday afternoon is open, with several options for activities. Discount tickets for Hershey Park are available. You can order them when you send in your registration. The national office transition has progressed smoothly. We have already received communications from the Association Executive, Carole Wiltsee. Advanced Management Concepts is moving forward with its responsibilities. Dan Lea, CEO of Advanced Management Concepts, will be a featured speaker at our annual meeting in June. We welcome 2 new members, Richard Rutherford, Jr., of Farmers Cooperative Association, Frederick, Md., and Jane Hoffman, National Cooperative Business Association, Washington, DC. The transition by all accounts proceeded smoothly thanks to the efforts of Barbra Hickey, and our new Executive Director, Kim Fantaci. Barbra continued to work for NSAC until April 15 th to facilitate closing the Springfield office, and disposing the office equipment and furniture. Barbra was also able to negotiate us out of our national office and postage machine leases at a substantial savings. They always performed their duties in an efficient and personable manner. We wish them both well, and offer our sincere thanks for their efforts on behalf of NSAC. As I understand it Debbie has taken a position with the National Association of Children s Hospitals and Related Institutions in Alexandria, Virginia. While there are certainly mixed feelings on the closing of our national office in Springfield, the decision was made with much consideration, and for sound business reasons. Our National President, Bob Beerup, and our National Executive Committee, handled this matter in an exemplary manner. It was an often difficult situation, and Bob and the Executive Committee handled this matter with class, and fairness.

3 Please remember, and make every effort to attend our National Annual Meeting. This meeting will be held at the Omni Interlocken Resort near Denver, Colorado, on August 2-4. Autograph your work with excellence. Congratulations are in order! Not only did our Capitol Chapter win its seventh consecutive Silver Star in 2003, but when the dust had settled, we found that we had achieved the highest number of points among all the NSAC chapters. The successful hosting of the Annual Meeting, and the good Chapter attendance, really helped add up the points! In spite of being one of the smallest NSAC chapters, we continue to be recognized a leading chapter in the national organization. A Silver Star is awarded annually to each NSAC chapter that demonstrates outstanding achievement in a variety of categories, including participation in the annual National meeting, the annual Chapter meeting, special projects, TCA articles, membership growth and development, Chapter newsletter, and other areas. The national organization has tweaked the requirements a bit to ensure that we are focused on what makes for a successful chapter. Significant points are awarded for membership. Please continue to identify and invite other cooperative business people to join NSAC. There may be folks in your company, or in other organizations that provide services to cooperatives, that would benefit from the education, experience, and exposure that NSAC offers. Do them, and your chapter, a real favor by introducing them to NSAC. Have you ever been published? Writing an article for TCA is an excellent way to share something of interest and value with your colleagues. Not only do articles of all lengths short or long give you some recognition, but they also earn points for your chapter. We are competing against other NSAC chapters in the Silver Star program. 4 NSAC CAPITOL CHAPTER ANNUAL MEETING HERSHEY LODGE & CONVENTION CENTER You will soon be receiving registration materials for the Capitol Chapter Annual Meeting. The meeting is scheduled for June 23 rd through 25 th at Hershey, Pennsylvania. As mentioned in the President s Message, some of the topics on the agenda include the following: Health Care and Health Insurance Costs Accounting & Auditing Updates Legislative & Economic Updates Advanced Management Concepts presentation In addition to the educational opportunities, the location of this year s meeting promises a variety of entertainment options. 5 NSAC NATIONAL ANNUAL MEETING Don t forget to mark your calendars and be on the lookout for the 2004 NSAC National Annual Meeting and Technical Program registration materials. This year s meeting will be held at the Omni Interlocken Resort near Denver, Colorado on August 2 nd through 4 th. The Mid-West Chapter will be hosting this event against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. The year-round AAA Four-Diamond resort features a 27-hole championship golf course and a full-service spa and fitness center, not to mention the mall across the street which offers over 200 shops and restaurants! All of this on top of a chance to network with other NSAC members and keep up-to-date with topics timely to accounting and cooperatives. CAN YOU PICTURE YOURSELF HERE?? CAPITOL CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP SUMMARY From November 1, 2003 to January 31, 2004 the Capitol Chapter gained three new members and lost three members. The Capitol Chapter began November with 94 members and ended January with the same.
